101 things to do with mince.....

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/02/2009 21:49

Inspire me someone please! I do a mince-based meal once or twice a week. At the moment the things I do are:
Lasagne
Shepherd's Pie
Spag Bol
Burgers
Meatballs
I could do chili but the children won't eat it. Any other thoughts on how to feed a family of five with a pack of mince?

sheesh, I need to get my glasses fixed!

I read: "101 things to do with mice" so I had to click to see wtf you were on about

so... mouse casserole
mouse curry
mouse en croute
mouse with ratatouille (geddit? )

mouse a l'orange

erm... that's all I can think of.

good luck with the mince recipes

Have a look on mumsnet recipes

yama · 04/02/2009 21:52

I know you've already got burgers but these blueberry burgers are lovely (and pretty healthy).

Jamie Oliver does a nice mince and veg pie in Ministry of Food. So easy even dh (he who does not cook) made it at the weekend! Also in his book, a beef wellington made with mince.

Ewe · 04/02/2009 21:53

Burritos? Don't have to be too spicy.

FrazzledFairyFay · 04/02/2009 21:54

I cook spicy mince (using taco or fajita seasoning), put some in a tortilla with a little sour cream/yoghrt and some cheese and wrap it up. I then place several next to each other in a dish. Top with passata and some cheese and bake in the oven. Yummy.

PMSL Squonk! We have just got two kittens but I never thought about using their hunting skills to supplement the family diet. Good thought!

stuffed marrow...when is marrow season?

castlesintheair · 04/02/2009 21:56

Dolmadakia

Ewe · 04/02/2009 21:56

Moussaka?

BBC website has some good ideas of stew/hotpot type things too.

Classic here is mince and onions, which I serve with mash or yorkshire puddings:

Fry a large, chopped onion and 3 or 4 large carrots, sliced. Add 500g mince and stir till it's all browned. Sprinkle in one Oxo cube. Season with black pepper, salt and oregano (or whatever herbs you like)

Then add enough water to cover, generously.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for at least 30 minutes. Remove the pan and continue to cook, until the liquid has reduced.

Add a splash of soy sauce and some Worcestershire sauce as well.

Burritos/tacos are a good idea.
Will try that blueberry burger recipe, it looks good. I usually do red onion and pesto burgers.
MrsMaidaMess - I was thinking of getting Ministry of Food for DH as his New Year's Resolution was to learn to cook. I do have three million cookbooks of my own but they don't tend to have a lot to say on subjects like 'ways with mince' or 'feeding a family of five on a minuscule budget'.

I like the chinese-style idea too, Bloss.

Anything you'd normally do as a casserole/ pie/ stew. For example... Beef and ale pie, beef and mushroom, beef stew, goulash, beef in red wine etc.

I usually cube the vegetables in about 5mm cubes and microwave them in a little water before combining with the mince to make a quick meal.

Cies · 05/02/2009 12:32

You could vary the type of meatballs you make - some with lots of herbs (oregano, basil etc), some with a hint of spice, some with lumps of cheese in...

I've had different sauces - a more tomatoey one, a more herby one, a more spicy one etc.

I think I've followed a Delia recipe and a JO recipe before, but now just make them up as I go along.

Coldtits · 05/02/2009 12:34

Curry it with plenty of onions. Delicious.

giantkatestacks · 05/02/2009 12:43

we still do chilli but take out the dcs portion first and then add some cumin and chilli flakes to our portion.

Meatloaf as well?

And I second the wraps thing though I do the same bolognaise type sauce then bung it in some wraps, fold, skewer them with metal bbq skewers then top with cheese and into the oven.

zanz1bar · 05/02/2009 13:24

also bobotie and frickadels(?)
try and workout that cultural childhood?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 05/02/2009 13:31

I will confess - I don't like mince much myself, so anything that can be done with diced beef eg stews, chili, pies, I will do that way! It's the sloppy texture of mince I don't like - but as the children like it and it is cheap I try to cook it once or twice a week.
Meatloaf now - there's a thought. I think I last ate meatloaf circa 1978.
