How much sugar do you /your family consume in one month?

I am not sure I am posting in the right place but...

I was just asking myself that question. As a family of 6, we consume just under a kg of sugar per month. (I do quite a bit of baking as well) is that too much?

None [smug]

But I am NOT a baker

BonsoirAnna · 08/01/2009 14:30

As in bags of sugar?

None, as we add sugar to nothing, unless I bake which I rarely do.

But I do buy cakes and ice-creams and other sweet foods.

2k9kids · 08/01/2009 14:31

last time i bought a small bag of sugar was at my old house, so must be nearly 2 yrs ago.
We dont add sugar to anything and I very rarely bake!

but I bake birthday cakes for people and get through alot so it ihard to gauge what is family use and what isn't

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 14:32

About 4oz a month in buns/cakes we bake but other than that none.

We don't sweeten tea or cereal, although we do use jam or honey on porridge..

(But - do not impose a blanket ban on the white stuff... just don't add it to anything)

Don't buy biscuits though

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 14:36

None really here either unless i make cakes or biscuits and usually use brown.

We too have a very old and maky bag of white sugar somewhere. I'd hate a sugar taking guest to see it.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 14:37

fortnight

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 08/01/2009 14:38

One bag a fortnight or thereabouts, DH and DD take 2 sugars each in drinks despite several pleadings from me to give it up although when I make they get one and don't notice

That's all.

I don't bake and don't use very much sugar in cooking. We don't have sugar n drinks or on ceraels.

A bag of sugar lasts months.

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 08/01/2009 17:17

I'm on my 3rd bag in about 6 years. Don't add it to drinks or cereals. I do bake sometimes but tend to use brown sugars / syrup / treacle for better flavour.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 17:23

Goodness you all put me to shame, I am really starting to feel very uncomfortable please can someone other than Butterfly reassure me? I might try buying a 1/2kg bag next shopping to see where it takes me!

iwantitnow · 08/01/2009 17:28

I don't keep track as use all sorts of different sugars in baking not just one type - very little nutritional difference with any of them. People who eat ready meals and prepackaged cereals eat an awful lot of hidden sugar much better to cook from scratch and bake alot IMO.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 17:30

I totally agree with you there iwantitnow, it also tastes better (most of the time anyway!)

OP posts:
12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 08/01/2009 17:30

... don't eat ready-meals either, cook everything from scratch. Hands up - there are cornflakes, bite-sized shreddies, porridge and own-brand weetabix in the cupboard!

nooka · 08/01/2009 17:31

Not something I keep track of, but I only use sugar in baking. When I bake we buy less sweet stuff, so I think it balances out. I think if you are worried about sugar/sweet stuff consumption it is better to keep a food diary for a couple of weeks than to concentrate on the white stuff alone.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 18:58

The thing is we do not buy much sweet stuff. we received some chocolates before Christmas and have still not finished them and Dcs are keen on fruit and toasts as snacks, i am starting to think it all goes between Dh's hot drinks and my backing then.
