What do your children have for breakfast?

My children aren't that bothered about cereal and they always seem to have so much sugar in them anyway.

They usually have toast and marmite/jam/chocolate spread or in a sandwich. The little ones also have banana smoothies (just milk and banana, no icecream in it before I get told off!) Older dd won't drink milk much now which is a shame.

We don't have time to start doing cooked breakfasts. What else could they have? Toast is getting a bit monotonous. Sometimes they have a hot cross bun, but I really think of them as cakes for tea time.

DD (2y8m) has 2 weetabix in warm milk and generally nicks a slice of toast of her dad and then goes on to eat an apple/banana !

DS1 (almost 13) & DS2 (11.5) generally have cereal. DS prefers Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and will eat 2 bowls for breakfast every morning. DS2 loves weetabix with warm milk too, or toast

Thomcat - can I ask what the 'bowel essence' is? Is it just for children? I'm thinking it sounds like it could help my mum, who has constant problems with her bowels, and has recently been in hospital with diverticulitis. (Sorry to interrupt this thread).

We have cereal on weekdays - weetabix, shreddies, shredded wheat or force flakes, and boiled egg and bready boats (soldiers to most people) at weekends.

tigi · 26/03/2005 21:09

ds2 - 2 bowls shreddies or 2 bowls porrage
ds1- the least he can get away with - toast or cornflakes
ds3- a bowl cornflakes or loops or porrage with jam

dd loves food and loves pancakes with maple syrup, dipping biscuits( we buy them in france..packs of fortified cereal biscuits but not like the crap ones here.. these are a lot nicer with warm milk and quite addictive!! she also loves omelettes/black pudding with toast and butter and peppers/ tinned fish..i could go on....

samdarling · 26/03/2005 21:58

I agree Moondog "What's wrong with a monotonous b/fast?" I ate nothing but "Shreddies" every single day for years as a teenager. I try to vary it a bit now but still seem to eat Wheetabix most days.

during week
DS eats porridge/ready brek/cocco pops/shreddies DD (9mths) eats wheetabix/shreddies/bananas

weekends
DS eats cereal as above or sausage sandwiches or croissants etc
DD still eats same

CocoPops, Golden Nuggets, Sugar puffs, or Weetabix. Or sometimes toast.
And an Actimel and a yogurt.

Great thread, lots of good ideas.
mine have cereal (weetabix, shreddies or rice krispies, a bit messy this last) plus big cup of milk and some fruit - an apple, a baby orange, handful of grapes, banana or sometimes raisins.
As a change I sometimes but crumpets or pancakes (both reasonably low in sugar). ALways insist on carb item to fill them up and the fruit is on the basis of "at least there's one FAVU in there at the start of the day!"
Today ds1 had a crumpet and 3 pancakes, dd 4 pancakes! plus grapes all round. DS2 was modest and just had one crumpet plus about three cups of milk as usual.
I have a friend with some very picky eaters (she has four children under 9) and she does scrambled eggs for all - claims this is easier than all the differnet cereals/amounts of milk/what to spread on different toast etc.
She also makes her own scotch pancakes in the morning (again, she knows the kids will eat them). God knows how she manages to find the time.
