Frozen peas are great obviously, but what other frozen veg is good?

I buy frozen peas and sweetcorn.
I have some frozen fine beans at the mo and they're ok.

What do you like? I am planning to use more frozen veg to minimize waste but don't want to compromise on quality.

Broad beans freeze brilliantly - with or without pods.
Sweetcorn.

Nagapie · 11/12/2008 16:45

I read somewhere (perhaps MN ) that there isn't much nutritional difference between fresh and frozen... depending on how it is cooked...

I use the brocolli - nt bad at all

DoubleBluff · 11/12/2008 16:45

french beans
corn on the cob

IMO the only frozen veg that is ok is peas. Tinned sweetcorn is much nicer than frozen. At a push frozen spinach is ok if put in things like fish pie.

Waitrose do bags of mixed grilled veg (courgettes, peppers aubergines, onion, etc), artichoke hearts, and grilled peppers, all of which I find v useful.

Also frozen spinach for omlettes, pizza topping, stirring a bit through rice, making curries (chick pea and spinach) to rack up green veg intake.

Frozen broccoli is horrid and soggy, imo.

Isaidkissmeunderthemistletoe · 11/12/2008 16:46

nagapie - I think that is true; freezing usually means it is fresher than the fresh stuff!

In theory frozen is supposed to be nutritionally better if it is frozen quickly once picked as "fresh" veg has time to deteriorate and loose vitamins. Also depends on how you cook them, boiling allows water soluble vitamins to leak out.

PeachyBidsYouNadoligLlawen · 11/12/2008 16:48

Frozen veg, if frozen rapidly as most is, is nutritionally superior to fresh as thats often been hanginga round losing vitamins for days. I think (Peachy has usual self doubt moment but would if the question was 'Are you Peachy?' tbh )

Depends on how you want to use the veg, if you're going to be slow cooking or whatever then broccolli / sweetcorn / beans / whatever all fabbo, but if its going to be served straight then fresh is usually a better texture.

Isaidkissmeunderthemistletoe · 11/12/2008 16:48

I do prefer tinned sweetcorn, but keep throwing away half a tin.

X with CoV LOL

Isaidkissmeunderthemistletoe · 11/12/2008 16:49

I usually cook it in the steamer Peachy.

Frozen peas, sweetcorn. fine beans, spinach, peppers(for adding to cooking)At the moment we also have brussels and they are quite good.
The only thing I don't like is broccolli as it is bit mushy- Saying that I still have some in the freezer to make "gren soup" for the DC's lunch

GrimmaTheNome · 11/12/2008 16:49

Soya beans - Birds Eye do them - are lovely - sort of between a pea and a broad bean.. VG in pasta dishes.

claireybaubles · 11/12/2008 16:53

Spinach is good if you are going to chuck it in stews and things, not so good as a side dish (it goes very mushy but tastes fine).

I got tesco value peas last time and was impressed at how much they taste like fresh garden peas.

Otherwise sweetcorn, broadbeans. Peppers are ok. Don't really like broccoli or cauliflower from frozen because of the mush factor

thenewme · 11/12/2008 16:55

Frozen sweetcorn is vile.

Frozen veg is better than fresh that has been hanging around.

Frozen parsnips are nice but a bit thin and cook quicker than it says on the packet so the small ones can burn easily.

EachPeachPearMum · 11/12/2008 17:02

We use-
peas, green beans, sweetcorn, leaf spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, baby carrots, 'mixed veg'- diced carrots, peas, sweetcorn and green beans for DD, 'stir fry' veg. You can also get the steam veg portions, but we haven't had those for a while.
I have also bought today from M&S mediterranean veg and potatoes that you just bung in a roasting tin which look very tasty- height of laziness, but I'm due in Jan, so need the freezer filled with easy to cook stuff.
We used to get mixed peppers too, but they were a bit tasteless compared to fresh.
The great thing about frozen is that you can just get out exactly the right amount- whether you're cooking for 1, 2, or 3, which is economical as there is no waste. It's also really easy to use if you're making a pie or cauliflower cheese, or whatever.

At Sainsbury you can also get a lot of frozen veggies in their own organic range, if you're looking for that- peas, beans, spinach, carrots, mixed veg.

I find frozen broccoli doesn't go mushy if you steam it.

Isaidkissmeunderthemistletoe · 11/12/2008 17:16

ok thanks - think I'll avoid cauli / broccolli but try some other stuff

We use frozen broccoli all the time and it's not mushy at all!

Never boil it though, only steam it.

claireybaubles · 11/12/2008 17:29

I steam it too but it's always mushed for me! Maybe it depends on the brand?

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 11/12/2008 17:43

Another fan of frozen brocolli here too.
Absolute hate the 'mixed veg' bags - they always taste frozen

Jenbot · 11/12/2008 18:06

Oh no frozen sweetcorn is much better! Plus if you have a big bag you can just put a sprinkling into everything you want to and not worry about throwing away half a tin all the time.

We have frozen peas, sweetcorn and broad beans.

Gorionine · 11/12/2008 18:20

I buy frozen spinach, peas, brocolis. Frozen veg are fab as they keep their goodness longer and very practical. If I am ever short of ideas, I just steam some and sautee them. always delicious. ( I `also freeze my own sliced carrots, slices celery, sliced leek and diced courgettes)

janeite · 11/12/2008 18:59

Frozen sweetcorn is much better than tinned.

But if you like tinned but end up throwing half of the tin away, Sainsbos sell packs of three mini tins, which I buy for dd2 to mix with tuna and zap in the microwave for stuffing pittas. She has to do this herself as I can't stomach the smell of tuna.

We use:

  • peas (obviously)
  • sweetcorn
  • sometimes the bags of mixed peppers for bunging into a pasta sauce but they go a bit too mushy, so fresh are better
  • broad beans: love em but I'm the only one who will eat them
  • the steam fresh packs, for dp to feed the girls with if I'm not there.
Mercy · 11/12/2008 19:03

I find the quality of frozen veg quite poor actually so I avoid it.

(not including peas or sweetcorn)
