Wanted a way to carry 2 plates of hot dinner without spilling

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 15:37

I often send dinner home with mindees & I need a system to carry their plates of food

Sometimes I send a large pyrex dish (with a lid) with some dinner in

But sometimes it is 2 plates

Any idea of an easy way to do it?

Put them inside Tupperware boxes?

SoupDragon · 20/11/2008 15:39

Our Poundland often has those plastic takeaway tubs. Would that work? They can be washed and reused.

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 15:40

Hmm - so round tupperware - I guess about 20cms diameter and about 8-10cms deep

Not sure which ones you mean SD?

Is plastic bad as the meals are hot?

buy those carry out tubs that restaurants use
the metal ones
you get them in poundshops

FourArms · 20/11/2008 15:56

The plastic tubs that takeaways use are on sale in poundland. £1 for 10. I reuse them lots and lots of times.

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 16:02

Still googling

Thanks for the suggestions so far

I think the tricky one is finding how to carry a plate.

The takeaway tubs are like this only clear. The website has the ones I'm thinking of but doesn't have a picture for them!

Mercy · 20/11/2008 16:11

Does the food have to be on plates?

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 16:36

Yep it is a pain - for mince & mash/pasta they go in a big bowl, but for ham chips & beans it doesn't work in a big dish (iyswim)

I can only think of something like this although it's not cheap as they only sell in bulk.

It's an oddly fascinating site though!

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 17:36

I think I want something washable & reusable - maybe stainless steel, with a lid?

Or something whereby I can stack two plates - then put in my larger bowl with lid

What you are after might be a tiffin box although this one might not be big enough.

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 18:16

Yes - just a bit bigger.......

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 20/11/2008 18:23

I can't find a bigger one.

would a cool bag keep things hot? Something like this. You couldn't hold it by the handle as everything would fall off the plate though

SoupDragon · 20/11/2008 18:25

Something like a food flask would work for the non-plated dinner

SoupDragon · 20/11/2008 18:42

Or a Bento box

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 18:51

You are trying hard Soupy - but the temp thing isn't an issue - it's only a few minutes away

It's more a food hygiene (flies) & spillage

I am being very ungrateful aren't I?

I think the Bento Box would work. You could separate the ham/chips/beans type meal into separate compartments to be plated up at home. Any sealable small tupperware type boxes would work for this.

SoupDragon · 20/11/2008 19:06

This "Lock and Lock" box set from Lakeland for example.

Ivvvvyygootscaaared444 · 20/11/2008 19:08

katymac put the beans in a seperate pot, then put the ham and chips into a tupperware and pop the seperate dish into the tupperware aswell.

www.japancentre.com/?cmd=cat&cid=481

These lunchboxes are used in japan to take rice and a main course to work to heat up again - they any good?

KatyMac · 20/11/2008 19:14

That has reminded me

DO you remember round (wicker) steamers? You could stack them 2 or 3 or 4 then there was a lid (they were very 80's)

They would work brill - I wonder if I can find any

OP posts:
KatyMac · 20/11/2008 19:16

like this but nicer & newer?

OP posts:
Mercy · 20/11/2008 19:20

That would leak though.

A tiffin tin would be great. They last for decades.
