What would you cook for a 1967 themed dinner party?

My friend is doing a murder mystery evening set in 1967, the recommended food is lentil soup, chicken and new pots, angel delight. She;s not keen on those so can anyone suggest anything else that woudl have been popular then for dinner parties - we thought prawn cocktail and black forest gateau, but is this more 70's?

Haven't looked at this properly but might be of some help retro recipes

I'll be back when I can remember the sort of things we ate then! (ds distracting me atm)

My mum says a normal roast, grapefruit in the shell & trifle/apple pie would be very normal

Spag bol was def 70'

KatyMac · 11/11/2008 16:22

& it would have been seasonal (no freezer)

Kathyis6incheshigh · 11/11/2008 16:23

Oh I did that murder mystery. The Angel Delight went down very well.

Maryland chicken? Sort of a chicken kiev type thing but stuffed with a slice of ham & a slice of cheese, then breaded. Served (according to my dad, anyway) with a banana fritter and a pineapple fritter. Possibly not the easiest thing to produce for a dinner party, and definitely a coronary waiting to happen.

We did a 60s themed murder mystery (prob same one) a couple of years ago and went for it with the prawn cocktail, lasagne & black forest gateau. It is more 70s than 60s, but set a sufficiently retro mood, we felt!

Cream with the apple pie not custard

Bought Choc mousse put into your own dish with a dollop of cream

CuppaTeaJanice · 11/11/2008 16:23

Chicken Kedgeree (sp?)

Samantha was always cooking it in Bewitched - think that was the sixties?!

Not in Liverpool in 66-70 according to my mum

& she did loads of socialising

Mercy · 11/11/2008 17:01

Ah, well we lived in the sophisticated south east!

Sorry pepsi, my mum's books contain French/Mediterranean recipes - although I did see beef Stroganoff mentioned.

How about some LSD?

cremolafoam · 11/11/2008 17:09

i think, according to my dad that you were more likely to get a dried up roast than anything else- (carveries were everywhere)with very limp boied cabbage and scooped potato.
this would have been followed by stewed prunes and custard or tinned peaches.

tomatoes and bananas were still quite exotic.!

angel delight came in about 1967 but would not have been served at dinner parties

jesuswhatnext · 11/11/2008 17:29

melon boats, using a slice of orange and a glace cherry on a cocktail stick

spag bol, using very overcooked spagetti

baked alaska.

i know! i was there

it was my mum that did the cooking though
