trying to think of new things to give my 7month old son. My mum told me that she thinks he wouldnt be allowed corned beef. Does anyone know?

Wobblyknicks, if I add 800g of potatoes to 340g of corned beef, of course I did not take the salt out. But I have reduced the percentage of salt per serving by 66%. It's like if I made overly sweet lemonade and I add more water and limejuice to reduce the amt of sugar per serving.

wobblyknicks · 10/03/2005 21:53

Well it took me a long time to find the facts without having a tin of the stuff in the house, because not enough people care about nutrition and the companies are happy to hide the info. Sorry if you felt like I came on too strong about it but am really concerned about the rubbish babies get fed these days.

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 21:53

thanks Libb, maybe i being a bit defensive but didnt have much success with bf so im trying my best at making my own food so to think ive gaven him something that is so bad for him makes me feel bad. Have PD so probably a bit more sensitive than i should be but thanksxxx

Umm, I wasn't disapproving - I quoted directly from the tin. Personally I love it but wouldn't give it to DS.

wobblyknicks · 10/03/2005 21:55

alux - but then you could still be giving 100g of corned beef (depending on how much your child eats), regardless of what else you add. Even if you give only 50g of the beef, or 25g, its still a massive lot of salt!!

alux · 10/03/2005 21:56

I found a tin of Fray Bento's lurking in the back of my cupboard - Ingredients: Cooked beef, salt, sugar, preservative (E250). Oh, I had not eaten corned beef for about 15 yrs before I married DH. He loves corned beef pie and I make one every couple of months as a 'treat' as I got to like it too.

Who makes gravy from a packet here? I make it because my British DH can't have a sunday din without it. It is horribly salty. Just like corned beef. And I bet it has an E number too. Remember the Sudan 1 scare? Loads of packet gravy involved.

HUNKERMUNKER · 10/03/2005 21:56

SJM, I'm sorry if I made you feel bad hun - wasn't my intention.

Libb · 10/03/2005 21:56

ooh, sorry. Crossed gubbins there, please don't worry.

You could always add the tiniest sliver to something - I personally adore seeing DS loving food so have to control my enthusiasm!!!

handlemecarefully · 10/03/2005 21:58

samanthajm,

I don't know how much salt is in corned beef - and generally I go with the advice of avoiding salt for babies, but obviously the odd thing which may contain a little salt is hardly going to be a terminal as long as it's not an every day occurrence.

I quite like corned beef too. Corned beef hash is very tasty.....but only eat it every once in a while.

marthamoo · 10/03/2005 22:00

Fray Bentos now make corned beef which is lower in fat and salt. I buy that. I love corned beef sandwiches and corned beef hash...

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 22:01

thats ok hm, im just confused with it all. You try to introduce new things but there is so much you have to watch with everyone having different opinions.I agree with Libb i love it when enjoys my food, great satisfaction.think ill stay away from cb to be on the safe side and will definitely be mentioning this hv.i did rely on here for keeping me right

OP posts:
alux · 10/03/2005 22:01

If I gave my child 100g of corned beef, he would also be eating 300g of potatoes with it. And ain't no way will I give a child a pound of meat and potatoes. You are talking as if the salt content is 50% or something. It is not! I wish the tin had the amt of salt in g's per 100g to make a sensible comparison as this is all just a waste of time without proper numbers. It may be the second thing on the label but it ain't as salty as we are demonising it. Crisps are far, far worse inho. Like I said: My salt intake is on the low side of normal. So if something is too salty, I know it.

Libb · 10/03/2005 22:02

That is why we have corned beef in the house, DP loves corned beef and mayonnaise sandwiches - the funny little bear.

Blooming disgusting if you ask me . . .

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 22:03

yeah i love it and made it tonight for ds,so how bad do i feel now. I am also confused about normal gravy. Baby stuff smells awful. Would love to give him some normal gravy with mince etc but maybe i shouldnt start that one

HUNKERMUNKER · 10/03/2005 22:04

It is hard hun - I know. Then just when you think you've got it cracked, the little blighters turn their noses up at it anyway!

Definitely ask your HV why she suggested such a high-salt product though.

I'm sure that in MN-land there are lots of tasty and simple suggestions for things to feed your DS - just ask and you'll be inundated

HUNKERMUNKER · 10/03/2005 22:06

You can buy lo-salt stock cubes (they're organic too - a bonus!) - they're in a blue box, made by Kallo and have 0.03g of sodium per 100g as opposed to regular stock cubes which are more like 0.4g per 100g.

marthamoo · 10/03/2005 22:06

7 months is still very young - I would save things like corned beef hash (with the low fat, low salt type!) and proper gravy 'til he is a toddler. You do have to be careful with salt when they are just babies - though what he has had tonight won't have done him any harm. It might taste bland to you but it won't to him. And you don't want to encourage him to crave salty foods.

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 22:06

Yeah know what you mean. I thought he loved potatoes in cheese sauce but refused it yesterday and eat the fish in cheese sauce instead. I bought the Annabel Karobel (mispelt) book for ideas. so hopefully

You can convert the sodium amount into salt - just times by 2.5. So if 100g has 808 milligrams of sodium, that 0.8g - which is 2 grams of actual salt. FSA guidelines say a baby under one year should have no more than 0.5g per day. So that's 25g of corned beef alone and they're done for the day.

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 22:08

Thanks HM ill look for these stock cubes. Marthamoo, i was told by hv to start giving him more things with lumps etc (even though he has no teeth) and things with stronger flavours so thats why i tried cb hash and thought of gravy.

OP posts:
Libb · 10/03/2005 22:09

At least you are trying your own stuff - I feel bad as I give DS jar food, I just don't have the time to cook and prepare batches.

I have just started to give into my guilt and accept it as my lot! It is hard work though isn't it?

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 22:11

just realised that pack of corned beef i bought gives you details at bottom. 0.9g of sodium per 100g. i must say there should be clearer descriptions on food

OP posts:
merrygoround · 10/03/2005 22:12

Went to cupboard to check tin (sadly CB hash is a recently discovered pleasure, but am now thinking twice about seeing if dd wants to try it) - but no mention of the amount of salt. Is there no requirement to give the sodium content then?

samanthajm · 10/03/2005 22:12

Libb, i was determined to give my own food to compensate on the failure of breast feeding. u get so much guilt trips from news etc. that i constantly feel like im doing something wrong. my baby is easy its everything else that goes with him that i cant seem to grasp

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 10/03/2005 22:14

There's no absolute legal requirement to give salt, or sodium levels, sadly.

samanthajm - so that's 2.25g of salt per 100g!!!!
