I just compared my Lidl shopping bill with what I would have paid at Tesco and....

.....I saved £26.23!

Woo hoo! It was a toss up between the usual Tesco today for the 'slightly more than weekly' shop or try out Lidl. We went to Lidl and got lots of the usual and the bill 'only' came to £85.20 and I just looked online at Tesco to compare the prices and added up that it would have all cost at least £111.43 there, that's even if I had bought Tesco's own stuff.

I didn't get any nappies or baby stuff (apart from 2 packets of wipes) plus didn't get my clubcard points, mind you they are pretty useless anyway...

A good result though eh?

It's good there isn't it? I used to use their nappies, they were great and very cheap.

CvQ · 24/09/2008 15:55

that is a brilliant saving

bundle · 24/09/2008 15:56

I couldn't do my whole shop there, there's too much processed stuff for me.

I often do a Friday £20 @ Lidl - see what I can get for £20 which is what I'd normally spend on my vegbox.

Yeah there was some stuff I couldn't buy like lentils (!) and curry powder but I can get that round the corner at the Co-op. I think I also saved money by not buying the usual overpriced baby stuff like ricecakes (toast will do for finger food!) and those fruit purees that are so convenient. It's good for DS too as he has no choice now but to munch on proper chopped up fruit as mummy doesn't have any plastic flavoured fruitpura for him now

I was in there yesterday and had to avert my eyes when I went past the display of all the xmassy marzipan chocolates and that soft gingerbread covered in dark chocolate....

And I've never even lived in Germany

But I did get a pile of corn on the cobs for 19p each!!!!

Bread flour 35p a bag.

I don't go in all the time but I know whats cheap there so if I'm passing I pop in and stock up. i do the same with Aldi and Netto too, between them all I can get pretty much what I need. But then we do eat a basic kinda diet chez flibberty.

claireybee · 24/09/2008 16:09

I always seem to spend more when I go to Lidl because I can't resist all the continental biscuity chocolatey things

NoblesseOblige · 24/09/2008 16:11

asda smartprice is the way to go - have meal planned and done 4 wks shopping there for £90 - then spent £50 at farm shop on months meat - and allow £20 per wk for fresh fruit and veg, milk etc.

smug, moi?

Mercy · 24/09/2008 16:14

What's the quality like?

The nearest Lidl to me is rather scary tbh.

Oh yes there were sooooo many lovely looking European Christmas market type of sweets and cakes, I had to quickly walk past them all as I am still trying to lose my baby belly!

The quality of the food looks fine, I had some hummous I got there for my lunch with their bread and it was deeeeeelish.

Top bargain was chicken breasts, £3.99 for what Tesco sells now for about £6.50. Also a box of oatcakes was only 39p (tesco equiv 99p) and all their cereals are dirt cheap!

Ok, I might give it another go then.

(although I won't get the houmous as there are plenty of Cypriot/Turkish shops near me!)

bobsyouruncle · 24/09/2008 16:32

what's the quality of the meat like generally?

Flibbertyjibbet · 24/09/2008 16:40

Dunno. I get my meat from a local butcher on my local market who grows it all on his farm 5 miles away.
I do sometimes buy lidl packs of chicken thighs and they are fine, just the same as Tesco/sainsbos but half the price.

Those waffles they do near the bread section, DP just loves them!

We usually save about £35 on the monthly shop by sticking to Lidl.

Our car and contents insurance is from Tesco and linked to our points so that's how we rake those in.

mrsshackleton · 24/09/2008 20:07

i love lidl but NOT for meat
Bought some pancetta there the other day, it was runny and watery and full of additives according to the pack, which of course I should have read in the shop had dd2 not been trying to climb out of the trolley
Bought a chicken too - free range, but I didn't think it tasted up to much. Have decided to fork out on organic meat as a special treat once in a while but stick to veggie dishes the rest of the time. Everything else at Lidl is great and at the one I go to the quality of fruit and veg is superb, plus a wider range than at my Tesco's.

i prefer aldi for quality.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 13:07

in both lidl and aldi i avoid the fruit/veg and bread though.

spicemonster · 28/09/2008 13:10

why do you avoid the fruit and veg na? They're pretty good (if you use them quickly)

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 13:10

they don't last long enough even when kept in the fridge.
