I just compared my Lidl shopping bill with what I would have paid at Tesco and....

.....I saved £26.23!

Woo hoo! It was a toss up between the usual Tesco today for the 'slightly more than weekly' shop or try out Lidl. We went to Lidl and got lots of the usual and the bill 'only' came to £85.20 and I just looked online at Tesco to compare the prices and added up that it would have all cost at least £111.43 there, that's even if I had bought Tesco's own stuff.

I didn't get any nappies or baby stuff (apart from 2 packets of wipes) plus didn't get my clubcard points, mind you they are pretty useless anyway...

A good result though eh?

Tesco has started stocking some cheap range, even cheaper than their own brand.
The lemonade is quite nice.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 28/09/2008 13:13

thats what my dh says too. ok if used on same day

twinsetandpearls · 28/09/2008 13:13

We were discussing if we should start shopping at Lidl as it will cover dd dancing fees. Don't think there is one near us though.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 13:14

we have bought fresh carrots, parsnips and peas from there and then frozen them.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 13:15

twinset - do you have a netto? i prefer them to aldi and lidl cos they have more branded stuff.

twinsetandpearls · 28/09/2008 13:23

Don;t know I am in Dorset.

twinsetandpearls · 28/09/2008 13:26

nearest Lidl is 11 miles away, netto is 37 miles away and aldi is 12 miles away. Can't see it would be cost or time effective.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 13:29

i think lidl do online shopping.

twinsetandpearls · 28/09/2008 13:42

thanks na will check that out.

twinsetandpearls · 28/09/2008 13:44

can't see an online shopping link.

nappyaddict · 28/09/2008 23:08

oh i dunno then, perhaps they don't. was just going off what someone had said on here.

racingsnake · 28/09/2008 23:28

Lidl also fun because of the bizarre items in the central aisle, different each week: pipe smoking sets, gold fish bowls, a kayak (!), vitamin powder for horses (!!). Recently I bought huge tubs of multicoloured pavement chalks for all DD's summer-born friends for £1.99 each. Great birthday presents. Great fruit and veg, too.

MatNanPlus · 28/09/2008 23:36

I get the weekly newsletter of specials and it is great for planning meals as they have fish specials and gifts.

Lusi · 29/09/2008 00:10

My DP used to buy most of his fruit/veg for his restaurant at Lidl - thought they were great quality and very cheap...
Used to try and persuade me to go - but they don't sell everything I want - so I would have to go there and Tescos...
Now he buys things there and then I have to get less from Tescos...
Aldi and Netto are good too..

Not sure i would save money though - always look at the stuff in the middle and usually end of buying something I don't really need...or spot something that annoys me (like an outside light that I paid £15 for in B&Q and was faulty and had to go back twice...then I saw an identical one in Netto for £5 grrrr)
Also watch out for the car parking - they image your reg plate on the way in and out - if you overstay you won't get a ticket on your car - just a bill in the post later. It is a private parking company -so you don't have to pay - but better to avoid the hassle.

racingsnake · 29/09/2008 13:09

Do you have to pick up the newsletter or can it be sent? We live a good way away from our nearest Lidl so can't just drop in on the offchance they have a useful kayak for us.

MatNanPlus · 29/09/2008 14:49

Great. Just signed up. A sadly sensible selection at the moment.
