What started out as a few mums trying to get helpful, friendly advice seems to have turned into a witch hunt....Get the mothers who even consider giving their babies solids before 6mths.
I was quite happy in my decision to start dd on a tsp of baby rice but now i just feel pressured even bullied that i could have done such a thing.
THANKS MUMSNET!

Any mums who would like to discuss weaning (no age restrictions)
would love any advice tips and help without being judged....

How do you know your baby would have fed every hour? There is a growth spurt around 4 months which lots of people mistake for needing solids but you can just offer more milk until it passes. My dd certainly didnt feed every hour, need a dummy etc. Out of all the mums who have said on mumsnet they waited, I dont remember anyone who had that sort of experience.
Remember, milk is far more filling than puree anyway. Lots more calories.

As for MMR, well, people do lots of research into this and dont simply follow their own instincts as you suggest they should for weaning. Not giving or giving the MMR is an informed" choice, not done on how mum feels* feels about it but after lots of research.

just to leave pureed food for a few weeks -

why not leave it?

What reasons are there to give solids before 6 months?

It is true in underdeveloped countries, for some undernourished women, babies might need supplementing but that's not the case in the UK.

Why not wait until 6 months rather than taking the chance?

Twiglett · 27/02/2005 09:37

and the link between the two is IMHO the wanting to do what is best for your child without a shadow of a doubt based on current medical knowledge

there is conflicting research on vaccinations, with completely opposite viewpoints by eminent scientists, when you trawl through the research the safest route can seem to be to limit the number of vaccines per hit in certain cases

there is no conflicting research on weaning, there is no research (that I am aware of) that says that weaning at 4 months has any benefits over leaving it later

One of the "reasons" for giving solids that's really been annoying me lately (largely because DH, who supports my decision to wait until 6 months, has been saying it!):

"My baby was grabbing for my food."

Well, you know, DS2 has been grabbing my books, magazines and newspapers lately. I don't think this means he's ready to read.

lol notquitecockeny.

DD always tries to eat the batteries from the remote.....

hercules · 27/02/2005 09:44

She asked for information about when to wean which she was given. She thanked everyone then decided she didnt like the answer....

IF you dont want to hear views that might differ to your own, dont ask for them.

vess · 27/02/2005 21:10

Well if you happen to have a very hungry baby who seems very keen on solids right from the start...wouldn't you consider starting early?

vess, I would consider starting a week early, maybe. Not more than that. Being hungry or interested in solids doesn't mean a baby's gut is actually ready for them.

I think DS2 is an amazing baby, he's just wonderful, I think he'll be the smartest most advanced baby in the world (I do realise I'm a bit biased). But I don't think his gut is more mature than any other 5-month-old baby's gut.

Advice was requested, and given gently, on another thread. Then people argued about it (in both directions).

Then this thread was started, claiming there had been a witch hunt. This, oddly enough, didn't calm things down.

I don't think anyone has said that weaning isn't a decision for individual parents. Or that it's worse than .

You opined that we'd all been "shitty" on here. I thought that was a little bit harsh.
