What can I put into chilli, beany casseroles and stews other than tomatoes?

I'm doing a detox and tomatoes are out. I thought this would be fine, as I don't really eat them all that much...or so I thought. I didn't realise how much I rely on tinned tomatoes for my cooking. I have no idea what I can replace it with. The other day I did a chickpea and aubergine casserole and added veggie stock and some soya mince instead...it tasted good, but looked like brown slop on my plate.

Has anyone got any ideas what i can supplement with?

Mushrooms?

Mung · 16/09/2008 13:37

what is "toxic" about tomatoes?

GrapefruitMoon · 16/09/2008 13:37

Lentils to thicken it?

Mung · 16/09/2008 13:41

tomatoes are too acidic
lentils too fiberous (beans ok though)
mushrooms too fungal

only 3 weeks to go and although i will continue with some bits of it, they are the three things I am missing. I thought it would be chocolate and bread...but I can live without those.

leeks? carrots -pearl barley if you don't fancy lentils

mrspink27 · 16/09/2008 13:45

courgettes? peppers?

georgiemum · 16/09/2008 13:46

bulgar wheat, carrots, peppers, courgette, mooli, parsnips (yuk uk yuk), aduki beans, sweetcorn. If it's sloppy have it with couscous or rice.

bundle · 16/09/2008 13:53

sorry it sounds absolutely bonkers

beans ok, lentils not? what is this based upon?

cremolafoam · 16/09/2008 13:56

baby spinach at the last minute
french beans
asparagus?
sounds like it needs a bit of green and crunchy

WhirlingStirling · 16/09/2008 13:56

My smallest dd used to have a tomato intolerance and I found it so difficult to cook many meals without tomatoes.

I would just add lots of other veg and maybe pearl barley and a spoon or two of paprika for flavouring. The paprika also alters the colour so it looks as though tomatoes are in there which made me feel better for some reason!

bundle · 16/09/2008 14:02

tomato intolerance is totally different

Overmydeadbody · 16/09/2008 14:02

I have made replacement tomato sauces with carrots and apples and caurgettes instead of tomatoes. Just boil them all until tender, then blend them up with some of the cooking water and use like you would tinned tomatoes or passatta.

Overmydeadbody · 16/09/2008 14:03

agree with bundle though.

Our livers do all the detoxing we need.

bundle · 16/09/2008 14:03

and too acidic?

what do you think is in your stomach?

TheFallenMadonna · 16/09/2008 14:06

Stomach juices are pretty acid.

TheFallenMadonna · 16/09/2008 14:07

ooh - how long did it take me to type that sentence?!

What bundle said

bundle · 16/09/2008 14:07

lol!

maybe instead of tomatoes you could add some hocus pocus

Overmydeadbody · 16/09/2008 14:08

mushrooms too fungal? What does that mean exactly?

Overmydeadbody · 16/09/2008 14:11

bundle

hatwoman · 16/09/2008 14:12

pmsl at the fungal business.

I agree with the paprika - a bit of colour psychology goes a long way when it somes to food. and use a bit of flour to thicken stocky-type sauces. again - totally psycological but definitely helpful. "a thick sauce feels full of goodness" says my mum

Mung · 16/09/2008 14:21

Its the Scrivner detox and I agree that those things seem ridiculous, but its working and I only have another couple of weeks to go.

I'll give the paprika a try...thanks for your help.

"it's working"

Mung · 16/09/2008 14:24

Yes, I don't feel tired anymore and I have lost a bit of weight...thats working in my book.

How can you tell whether a detox diet is working?

Or is it a weight loss diet?
