What can I put into chilli, beany casseroles and stews other than tomatoes?

I'm doing a detox and tomatoes are out. I thought this would be fine, as I don't really eat them all that much...or so I thought. I didn't realise how much I rely on tinned tomatoes for my cooking. I have no idea what I can replace it with. The other day I did a chickpea and aubergine casserole and added veggie stock and some soya mince instead...it tasted good, but looked like brown slop on my plate.

Has anyone got any ideas what i can supplement with?

here's one of jane scrivner's detox recipes:

JANE SCRIVNER DETOX - RECIPES

Some more delicious ideas for detox recipes, ............
Potato/spinach curry
Serves 3-4

1 can chopped toms
small piece grated ginger
2 cloves garlic crushed
large teaspoon curry powder (made fresh or shop bought)
small green chilli, de seeded and finely chopped

1 pint veg stock ? bouillon is good
1 can chick peas ? can use kidney beans instead
8 to 10 new potatoes
3 handfuls fresh spinach
small pot of natural goats yoghurt

so????.
fry garlic and ginger and green chilli, add curry powder, toms, pots and chickpeas and stock. Cook with lid on for 25 minutes or until pots are soft.

add spinach and yoghurt, stir through and serve.

Hope you like it ? I also chuck a handful of fresh chopped coriander on the top??

Ah, cross post.

Again!

Do you think it's the detox aspect, or the constraints on what you can eat meaning you eat less IYSWIM?

Mung · 16/09/2008 14:27

Thanks for that...well, perhaps I'll reintroduce the tomatoes then bundle. My book definitely says no tomatoes though, but it is a bit old.

definitely the constraints for the weight, but the detox for the added energy. Whenever I have dieted in the past, I have felt lethargic and recently I have felt tired all the time (maybe thats because I have children ) so I wanted a boost of energy to enable me to exercise to then loose weight. I havent got to the exercise bit yet as I cant find the time.

Bundle...where did you find the recipe? Are there any more?

it's fine to exclude foods and lose weight (you are eating less) but please don't pretend it's some magic in whatever you're eating/leaving out

Mung · 16/09/2008 14:36

I know its the change in diet that has changed the way I feel, surely thats a good thing.

change yes, but not excluding those specific foods

the ones you've excluded aren't "bad" for you so what's the point in depriving yourself if you like them?

even JS's website has a bloomin recipe with them in

bundle · 16/09/2008 14:39

she even says to skin broad beans "for better colour and flavour"

whatever happened to roughage overruling appearance?

Mung · 16/09/2008 14:41

you're right...its odd that the very first recipe and first ingredient you see is tomatoes. Perhaps I need to check my reading skills instead
