want to look like a competent cook and as though as have made an effort without being the talk of the playground for pretentious ponciness - iyswim?

so far ideas are:

  • fish pie
  • braised sausages and puy lentils
  • spinach, avocado, bacon salad with parmesan
  • pasta bake

any of these would be OK but seem a bit ordinaire? or are they fine?

she will also have her youngest of 2 with her so nothing too spicy.

thanks in advance for your help

I would do a caeser salad with griddled chicken breasts, homemeade croutons etc.

compo · 15/09/2008 10:36

if it's just lunch I think the salad sounds fine and sandwiches for the kids.
Or baked potatoes and salad
I wouldn't go overboard tbh, you are the first to do lunch so you don't want to set a dangerous precedent or always doing something spectacular

tassisssss · 15/09/2008 10:36

I'd do soup

Overmydeadbody · 15/09/2008 10:36

Well, if I was invited round for lunch I'd be expecting bread/cheese/humous salad type affairs or a sandwich, or soup and bread, rather than a hot cooked meal. If I was served a hot meal I would be very pleased and escited but also decide that the person had gone to a lot of effort for me (not that that's a bad thing!)

Heathcliffscathy · 15/09/2008 10:37

ooo gosh life is far too short to be worrying about looking like a competent cook to another mum!!!

how about nice soup (NCG or the like or homemade if you wish) some crusty bread, olives, pate etc and your salad think the pie and sausages are bit wintry evening

bossykate · 15/09/2008 10:37

oh thank you

actually, i am not the first to do lunch, i am "repaying" (not that i think of it like that). she did a very nice salad nicoise...

Overmydeadbody · 15/09/2008 10:37

I'd do humous, cheese, olives, crudites, salad and home made bread.

stroppyknickers · 15/09/2008 11:19

French bread, cheese, ham, grapes. Works every time!

DrNortherner · 15/09/2008 11:21

Roast chicken, salad and crusty bread.

bossykate · 15/09/2008 12:59

Gosh you are really living up to your name.

What more do you want, there are loads of great suggestions here.

PoorOldEnid · 15/09/2008 13:27

bossykate · 15/09/2008 13:28

bad day, tdwp? don't take it out on me.

OP posts:
compo · 15/09/2008 13:29

tdwp - I thought you'd flounced last week after you were bitchy on another thread?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/09/2008 13:54

Not being bitchy, just pointing out that there are loads of ideas here already.

ScummyMummy · 16/09/2008 17:12

Why shouldn't BK get a range of ideas, tdwp? Food is something that it's great to get lots of ideas on. I am ed that someone who likes yummy caesar salad could be so dismissive of other yummy foods. All delicious foods must be celebrated and there is room for all suggestions, surely?

BK- good luck with your lunch. I'm sure it will be lovely.

bossykate · 17/09/2008 09:17

hi there scumster!

my thoughts exactly

have decided to go for a pasta bake, with a side salad and a trifle to follow.

thanks very much for all the suggestions

MakemineaGandT · 17/09/2008 14:53

bossykate - sounds good

Other ideas for future:

Sausages and mash
Shepherds pie
Roast chicken
Chicken and leek pie

Crumble always nice this time of year

I nearly always do Shep pie in these sorts of circumstances - everyone likes it, you can prepare in advance ready to pop in oven

Here you'd get a roast chicken, crusty bread and salad, or, pasta & salad, or quiche & salad. Nice cake for pudding.

Don't go too over the top - remember she will (hopefully) want to reciprocate so don't set the bar too high.

The fact that someone else has gone to the trouble to make lunch for her will be a treat.

bossykate · 17/09/2008 17:08

thanks all

yes don't worry i will file all these suggestions away for future use!

cod, you would love this trifle, it's divine, but don't worry i'll remember to do an apple tart when you come round
