Aspartame - Which Squash and Yoghurts DO NOT contain it?

RGPargy · 12/09/2008 15:17

Does anyone have a list of what food stuffs DONT contain aspartame? I know alot of food does contain it and so in particular i am looking for aspartame-free squash and yogs.

TIA!

Sainburys I think have taken it out of their own brand squash - certainly the Hi Juice doesn't contain it. I can't understand why people want to drink stuff with sweetner in it - I know sugar, blah, blah, blah, but it's the lesser of two evils. Dilute fresh juice is a good one too.

I've got a fever-tree pack in the cupboard that doesn't have it. DH bought it though, I usually get Shweppes.

sweetkitty · 12/09/2008 17:44

We have Rachels yoghurts (yoghurt and fruit puree) or Yeo Valley which has sugar added but nothing that bad.

For juice we have diluted orange, apple or pineapple juice.

Guadalupe · 12/09/2008 17:47

We dilute juice too, but sometimes buy little cartons of delmonte 'fruitini' which is just high juice.

Plain yoghurt, add your own fruit or whatever.

Is there a hidden name for aspartame? (iyswim)

And why do you ask?

pagwatch · 12/09/2008 17:54

nutrasweet etc are aspartme
and it is the work of the devil and best avoided.

DadInsteadofMum · 12/09/2008 17:59

want to know how bad - Google aspartame and "donald rumsfeld" to find out how it originally got licenced (it should never have been)

silverfrog · 12/09/2008 18:13

for whoever was ranting talking about calpol - even the sugared version has sweetners in it now

after much discussion last time dd1 was ill (honestly, ws stood at the pharmacy in boots for nearly an hour, talking to everybody), there is now no children's paracetomol without sweetners in it. marvellous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/09/2008 18:26

butternut squash
spaghetti squash
acorn squash
should all be fine.

MatNanPlus · 12/09/2008 18:31

Not even a hospital prescribed one SilverFrog

The ingredients of Lidl Hi Juice :

sugar,
glucose fructose syrup,
water,
vitamin c,
citric acid,
flavouring,
preservatives - potassium sorbate, sodium metabisulphite,
concentrate blackcurrent juice!

MatNanPlus · 12/09/2008 18:35

Make is lindthouse

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/09/2008 18:37

What about Ibuprofen (though I dislike that for various reasons)

silverfrog · 12/09/2008 18:40

I don't know about sweetners in ibuprofen stuff, TDWP - dd1 can't have it, for a number of reasons (she has a very restricted diet, and most thigns react with her in a funny way - hence the marathon discussions trying to find a sweetner-free paracetomol)

brunettemum · 12/09/2008 18:42

Sainsbury's own brand definitely doesn't contain Aspartame - it's sugar free to boot. I get so cross with the whole 'sugar free' marketing gimmick - it's usually code for 'loaded with crap'. And the fact they put it in medicine quite frankly leaves me speechless.

silverfrog · 12/09/2008 18:43

Matnanplus - not sure if that was a question regarding hospital paracetomol? I know my GP can't prescribe anything, and whenever I have asked, I seem to encounter"there's that mad woman again" type reactions.

fortunately dd1 is rarely ill enough to need painkillers, but it would be nice to take the edge off stuff for her occasionally.

MatNanPlus · 12/09/2008 19:15

I just wondered as recently cared for prem twins, as she was on paracetamol and wondered if she was given that crap

It was hospital stuff and she was sent home with it, didn't taste like calpol.

i sample everything i can sample if given to a baby/child in my care obviously just a drop but it is surprising how different

MatNanPlus · 12/09/2008 19:16

...some same medicines from different companies can taste

RGPargy · 12/09/2008 23:14

Wow, thanx for all your replies! It's very annoying how loads of stuff is loaded with Aspartame or sodium benzate type stuff.

The reason i ask about the sweetners is because, although i dont drink an awful lot of squash, i suppose i do eat a few yoghurts a week and would like to make sure i'm not putting that stuff in my body.

Thankfully DD just drinks water and i make her yoghurts myself with natural yog and fruit blitzed up in the blender.

don;t know if it's alreadyt been said but Sainsburys have removed aspartame from ALL of their squashes. even the basics one and even the no added sugar ones.
and freom the fizzy drinks.

their kids yoghurts are fab. they don't even have sugar in!!! (and no sweeteners at all, just sweetned with the fruit)

RGPargy · 13/09/2008 00:11

Sounds FAB, yesterday!! I'm gonna get my yogs and squash from there!

The sainsbo's no-sugar squash has sucralose instead (which is a modified sugar and chemically nothing at all like aspartame. ). Taste-tested the lemon one vs robinsons, DH thought it much nicer (I couldnt tell).

RGPargy · 13/09/2008 23:01

That's interesting Grimma, thanx! I will look out for sucralose.

I went shopping in Asda today and bought some of their own brand low fat yogs as they are aspartame free and they even stated so on the packaging so i didn't have to do too much rummaging, thankfully!!
