Favourite single malt whisky?

Want to get DP a holiday treat but I'm not a whisky drinker. Can anyone recommend a good single malt (pref one available from the supermarket)?

balvenie or laphroig. they're lovely, very peaty.

Laphroig's my fave too. A lot of people like Glenfiddich

Aberfeldy, but that one is hard to find.

I guess my fav supermarket one would probably be Glenlivet.

I really dislike whisky although DH is adamant it just means I haven't found the right one!! His fav is also Laphroig.

DH likes Glenmorangie, or Macallan - not very peaty ones. Do you know what sort he likes in general?

Second Laphroaig, Caol Ila is also fantastic.

Like Laphroaig, but love Highland Park and Balvenie. Highland Park good if you're not so keen on peaty.

You really need to know whether he likes them peaty or not.

If he does, then Lagavulin, Talisker or Laphraoig would all be good bets.

Laphroig is really peaty

Lots of votes for Laphroig, but it is a rather distinct taste and too much makes my throat feel rough, like I've had too many cigars.

As a rule of thumb Speysides (ie. Glenlivet) are quite fine, Highland malts (Macallan, Glenmorangie) are classic-tasting and Islay malts are peaty.

Just asked DH (a big whisky drinker) he says if you don't know what type of whisky your DP likes then stay safe with a classic like Glenmorangie.

His current tipple of choice is a Welsh single malt called Penderyn, which he likes a lot.

caol ila is peaty and smokey but smooth. macallan is sweet and luscious.

Glenmorangie a bit dull, though, Slub? Seriously - Highland Park is smooth and beautiful. Peaty whiskies like Marmite - in that they divide opinion quite severely, not that they taste like marmite...

Blimey, thanks you lot. Think he might like it peaty - remember him drinking with friends in Scotland and having long discussion about their spring-fed peaty tasting water supply and how the whisky had a similar taste.

Will write a long list of your recommendations and head out tomorrow.

Laphroaig is a bit challenging for some, as it is so peaty.

Personally I would suggest Isle of Jura.

Habbibu my DH just flared his nostrils at you . I am trying to draw him on other non peaty whiskys he likes but he is heavily involved in some Indian thing on the telly.

He is a peat man.

I like peaty stuff too. Ask him if he likes HP, ask him, go on....

The 15 year old Highland Park is one of the best single malts available on the high street. It is an exceptional whisky.
