How much is your weekly food shop?

We are a family of 4 (mum, dad, DD1(8) DD2(21 months). We are spending anything up to £80 a week on food. This seems a lot. What else does everyone else spend on food and how can I save money.

OP posts:
Shoegazer · 19/08/2008 08:27

My budget is £70 a week for 3 of us. That gets us all our food for the week, toiletries and cleaning stuff when needed (usually buy one or two things a week to spread it out and so we don't run out), nappies, 2 bottles of wine and some beer. We shop at Sainsburys because I love Sainsburys and always have one treat meal a week for our date night. We go out once in a blue moon though.

Shoegazer · 19/08/2008 08:29

Oh, and I generally feed 2 more toddlers and adults for lunch or tea once or twice a week too.

MegBusset · 19/08/2008 08:34

Our budget is £100 a week but most weeks I manage to bring it in between £80-90. That's including nappies, lunches for DH (who works at home) and me, and all cleaning products, bog roll etc.

I meal plan, buy value products, we are veggie but we do spend a lot on vegetables.

littlemisss · 19/08/2008 08:36

2 adults and 1 dd (who is bf and not on solids yet) - well over £100.

OMG are we toatally profligate? Maybe it's the wine!!

all I can say is costco!......we save and shop for our meat there, get fillet beef, venison, duck etc SO much cheaper and probably go twice a year and spend 300 in a go, also get toilet roll, dishwasher tablets, shampoos etc (all in massive quantities) but saves us a fortune overall just leaving things like fresh veg and milk and tins to buy in the year...but prob spend 30 a week feeding 3 of us......more when we have visitors (which can be frequent)!

mersmam · 19/08/2008 12:18

I seriously do not see how it is possible to buy everything for £50 a week! I spend around £180 per week for me, DH and 3 DCs (1 in nappies, 1 just in nappies for bed). This includes all our food (we very rarely eat out or have takeaways), cleaning products, a couple of bottles of wine, toiletries... everything. I have tried but really struggle to get it much below this amount. I shop at tesco online, plan my meals (have a two week meal planner) and buy some Tesco 'value' things (toilet paper, kitchen roll, biscuits) I buy strawberries and raspberries or similar (whatever's cheapest) for the children and a couple of bottles of wine for us - but not much else in the way of 'luxuries'. So HOW do you do it??? Does the £50 include breakfast/ lunches/ dinners for everyone plus everything else... I really don't know how it is possible!!

marmitemad · 19/08/2008 13:26

mumooms,
I recently bought 30 free range organic "miss shapen" eggs from a monthly farmers market for £3.00 , taste perfectly normal. seller said they would last 4-6 weeks but I am struggling to use them up now (having to make lots of cake ).

I normally buy eggs from the butcher, 6 for £1.00

onepieceoflollipop · 19/08/2008 13:29

I reckon £50-£100 per week. We have just started totting it all up each week and making a note on the calendar. I think that will give a truer average figure.

Interesting thread, but there are so many variables I would guess most of us if we are honest couldn't give anything other than a rough idea. Some of us are spending the best part of £10 on formula milk. Others of us like the "premium" nappies.

Some of us buy toiletries with the main shop, and include that in the figure, others go to Boots or whatever.

Also our amount varies a lot depending on if we are either entertaining or going to someone else for a meal/meals.

Great post from whoever said their dh buys crates of wine twice a year. If we did that it would end up about twice a month.

onepieceoflollipop · 19/08/2008 13:33

Also ime if I try and cut back too much on the supermarket shop, we end up feeling a bit deprived and do lots of extra trip to the off licence/garage etc. So really it can be a false economy.

Thankfully we are able to spend the £70 or so that we seem to spend at the moment, so I try to avoid the hidden risk of spending only £30 in Aldi.

Aldi is great for basics btw, bills for things like cereal, frozen fish and lots of other stuff have gone down in our house since I started going there a bit more. I do have to do a bit of a top up at Sainsbury's or similar every couple of weeks though.

ChoChoSan · 19/08/2008 13:49

Every week we get an organic delivery - enough veg for 3 - 4 people, fruit and milk £20.

We also get a meat box every fortnight - enough for 3 people £46.

Since we have been doing this we hardly ever go to the supermarket, so no impulse buys, and we always get the bogof etc. offers where possible. We stock up well on pasta, rice and dried foods so we only need to go to the supermarket about once every 3 - 4 weeks.

There are only two of us, so when we cook we tend to freeze a portion, and our main expenditure is probably on wine!

We always use our left overs, and we make stock from bones etc.

We are lucky, as money isn't really an issue for us, but we just feel that it's so easy to squander money and waste food when you do a regular supermarket shop. And we benefit from well reared local produce in our organic boxes!

bayleaf · 19/08/2008 15:02

I won't admit how much we spend - it is a LOT less than the £900 a month we spent the month last year when I did a receipt log to 'see where it all goes to' but still more than most of you. In my defence DH spends on food for himself as much as me and 2 dds put together ( can't live without organic avocados etc... luckily he earns the money to pay for it all)
Somebody mentioned tesco vouchers for online shops but I don't think there is a link in the thread - and they are well worth researching. I've used them for a few years now ( was a period this year when they didn't work for more than one person - but they're back ''working'' now) you often have to try a few - some will say they've expired and not be accepted when you type them in - but keep trying all you can find - it's rare I do a shop and get nothing off.
try www.savacode.com/supermarket/ and topvouchercode.co.uk/tesco.html and also forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=38
There other sites if you can be botherd to trawl - Money saving expert website is brill as somebody else has mentioned.

TheArmadillo · 19/08/2008 15:20

around £50-70 atm which is too much, but we can afford it at mo (just) so am not too bothered. For me, dp, ds, and 2 cats.

Trying to spend less in one trip adn do several to stop stuff going off.

Also buying lots more frozen veg - are eating much healthier now it's not going off all the time. Frozen meat and fish (not processed stuff but things like plain chicken breasts, fish fillets).

Also using up storecupboard things.

Our biggest expense is that we eat meat/fish everyday, but then we rarely buy alcohol so it balances out. But we do buy coke/ginger beer/fruit juice as our other luxury.

Ds eats lots of fruit as well which is quite expensive.

HarrogateMum · 19/08/2008 15:29

If doing online shop at Asda - about £120, includes nappies for 1 and a half kids (!), wine, beer etc.

If doing online shop at Sainsbos - about £150 for the same.

5 of us - 2 adults, 3 kids, all under 4 but eat LIKE HORSES.

captainmummy · 19/08/2008 15:51

Bayleaf - £900 !!!!!!!!!!!A month???? All I can say is that I shopped last week for 5 of us in Tesco for £66 and last night for £56 - and that included a pot of economy paint!(£3) I havent been 'topping up' at waitrose either! I don't buy much meat - we eat meat 2-3 times a week tops. I did buy some mince for shepherds pie sunday, and we grow a lot of veg. There are usually threads on here - how to do a meal for 50p -type of thing. We'll have cheap meals like pasta and pesto (with chopped leftover meat/sausages, if its there) or omellettes (ditto) or noodles and veg (again, ditto) and if I cook with chopped chicken breasts I will only do 3-4 breasts between the 5 of us, and bulk it out with beans/veg. But I don't buy wine/cigarettes/nappies/magazines.

cheesesarnie · 19/08/2008 15:55

family of 5(me,dh,3 children-2 of us are veggie,3 are meaty)i usually put £150 aside a week for weekly shop-this includes all the bits we end up needing more of after shoplike running out of milk and bread.usually cost less.if i do it tescos online its normally £100 including delivery or just under.if dh does it instore he goes over the £150(more like £200)

Was going to say the same about the eggs. We have three free range chickens and the colour of the yolk varies between chickens and from day to day. Generally the darker yellow, the more greens they've been eating. It would also vary from breed to breed. Can't tell whether eggs are free range by the colour of the yolk.
We can spend about £60 a week for four of us if we are really on form, shop at Asda and buy thier value ranges, meat and veg from market etc. Its usually more like £90 - £100 because we enjoy shopping at Sainsburys more than Asda and I buy bread from our local bakers, fish from our fish van etc. We can prety much spend what we want if we think carefully and always have plenty of eg. mixed beans etc in the cupboards, so could probably spend next to nothing if we needed to. Also, we grow veg so wont be spending anything on potatoes, onions, garlic etc for quit some time!

blackrock · 19/08/2008 20:10

£90 per week 2adults, one child, two chickens and a dog.

We grow our own veg, and get meat from a family small holding. We have two chickens and so don't buy eggs.

The bill is usually a lot lower than this, but we have had visitors almost every weekend recently, more like £50.

We shop daily, and always plan on the day based on what is available. I never buy herbs or salad.

I think we could cut this down a great deal!

Poohbah · 19/08/2008 20:30

£80 for a family of four sounds like a bargin!

I spend £80 Tesco online [ocado don't deliver here ] £15 butcher and £15 veg van.

herbgarden · 19/08/2008 20:34

I'm impressed by the £50 budgets. We are 3 - I try to do a big shop every few weeks for bulk items maybe £100 and then £60 odd quid the other weeks in between,. That doesn't account for the quick nip into M & S foods in between or Waitrose.....I usually buy (within reason) what I want and really don't waste much as I see what I've got in the fridge and then cook accordingly. I wish I had a bit more room in my freezer so I could do bulk buys and bulk cooking sessions !

stroppyknickers · 19/08/2008 20:35

between 70 and 90 quid for 6 of us incl nappies but not toiletries. online at sainsburys, delivered mondays. Top up during week with wine chocolate and stuff we fancy eating (that would be takeaways...)

plus3 · 19/08/2008 22:45

we spend around £500 per month/£125 ish per week...more than I would like. Am really bad at buying off list, and should shop on line, but like to look at meat & fruit/veg myself.

Did try the martin lewis tip of downgrading your normal brands by one, and mostly it was fine, and was noticably cheaper. Must be more organised otherwise it will mean extra shifts for me!
