How much is your weekly food shop?

We are a family of 4 (mum, dad, DD1(8) DD2(21 months). We are spending anything up to £80 a week on food. This seems a lot. What else does everyone else spend on food and how can I save money.

This cleaning product malarkey always has me puzzled!

How many cleaning products does one really need to buy? & toiletries?

1 kitchen spray
1 bathroom spray
bleach
disinfectant
cling film
foil
kitchen roll
loo roll
washing powder
dw tablets

shampoo
conditioner
moisturiser
deodorant

surely these things last longer than a week? I buy this sort of stuff every 6 weeks and am learning to use up stuff before I buy it again as the kitchen cupboard was bursting at the seams!

Collision · 11/08/2008 21:46

GB - Sains is the most expensive so why not try Tesco/Lidl as main shop or Morrisons if one is local.

We have cut out wine for midweek and now sometimes share a bottle at the weekend. We do feel better for it too!

twinsetandpearls · 11/08/2008 21:47

About 150 to 200 a week but we have a dog and two cats and we eat well. Dp works at home so that includes his food during the day. That is shopping at tesco, butcher, fishmongers and farmers market.

Collision · 11/08/2008 21:50

Wow! Twinset!

We eat well too but it does help that DH is a chef and can make anything taste good!

twinsetandpearls · 11/08/2008 23:19

That included cleaning, some flowers and wine/ale. My dp is also a fussy eater so most nights I make two meals.

OLIVIASMAMA · 11/08/2008 23:58

Anything betwen £70 to £85 per week for the 3 of us, this includes formula milk, nappies, a couple of bottles of wine and a 6 pack of beers, I have just started going to Morrisons which is so much cheaper than Tesco where I used to shop. I still however go to Tesco once a month but Morrisons has knocked about £20 per week off our food bill.

Must say though, after seeing the amounts on this thread I'm going to rethink and try a bit harder, I just can't believe that you can do a weekly shop on around £50 per week.

OLIVIASMAMA · 11/08/2008 23:59

Oh and Dolly the dog!

Collision · 12/08/2008 09:44

OM - cut out the wine and beer and only eat good meat twice a week!

It is easy really!

SoupKitchen · 12/08/2008 09:50

£50 for 2 adults and 2 DC this is for all meals for 4, any extras required, toiletries, nappies, household products.
It used to be 80+ but careful budgetting and getting 1 Dc out of nappies has helped

annaje · 12/08/2008 09:53

Seriously - how does anyone shop for £50. I went to Sainsbury's yesterday and spent £57 and that was only for 3 days food supply. I supposed we could eat beans on toast - but can just imagine DH's face if I put that on the table as his evening meal! I normally spend about £130 a week for 4 of us and I suppose I do buy things that I don't need to (cakes, sausauge rolls etc). I am crap at meal planning - partly because nobody ever likes the same things. I'd love to find a menu that worked for the family.......

I do buy beer and wine (at least 2 bottles of wine a week) which adds a fair amount to the bill - and quite frankly, I am not giving up that little pleasure...!

lilyloo · 12/08/2008 09:54

Between £40 and £50 per week for 5 and pets too!
Can sometimes be little more if we need nappies/wipes!

SpandexIsMyEnemy · 12/08/2008 09:56

there's me & DS, some weeks i've had to do it for £20 (but had a lot in)

a full shop for me is approx £40, but that's not incl dog food. if I have to do dog food as well & napppies is more like £45-£50. (but I try to make that last as long as poss - ie.. 10 days to 2 weeks. and only buy dog food mil fresh and nappy top ups.

for the most part thou as long as I have nappies and dog food, each week the rest, I spend what I have and try to get as much as poss.

am slowly learning that the value/smart price stuff is just as good - and as latest beau says when I said to him sorry i've only got the value crisps - he said - well it's food isn't it - still crisps - at 51p for 12 packets you can't go wrong!

twinsetandpearls · 12/08/2008 09:58

We only eat meat a few times a week. When I need to reduce it I do cut out the booze. I have changed from sainsbury to tesco so that may change things. Yesterday I did a shop that came to 129 and that will last four days. We do have my sister staying with up though, but she was shocked when she saw the food bill.

SoupKitchen · 12/08/2008 09:59

We eat well IMO
Casseroles , sausage roast, pasta, curries, occasionally things like egg and chips.

I fully meal plan even lunches and make sure all leftovers ae included or frozen.

I make a cake once a week and we eat quite a bit of in season fruit in pies/crumbles etc .

We always have a bottle of wine.

It really is spending time to do your shop. If you spent the extra time it takes you to go to the supermarket 2x a week and did your shop online following planning, you can do it.

sausage roast - ooh that sounds interesting- is that literally just do roast pots instead of mash?

we have mincemeat roast which is v nice - ooh haven't had it for ages actually - hmm, can feel a mince roast coming on for tea!

SoupKitchen · 12/08/2008 10:02

Yes sausages just replace the joint of meat, so roast potatoes veg and Yorkshire puddings.
Cheaper but yummy

annaje · 12/08/2008 10:07

Soupkitchen - I always do a sausage roast for the DS's - they love that more than anything - although neither of them like roast potatoes (or any type of potatoes actually) but they have the sausages with lots of veg and yorky puddings with loads of gravy - clean plates all round......

annaje · 12/08/2008 10:10

Was thinking about doing a lamb curry (not too spicy because of kids) - does anyone have a good recipe???

twinsetandpearls · 12/08/2008 10:17

Do you have a sunday roast? That costs at least thirty quid. Yesterday I bought for the following meals. We had chinese so I bought some duck, pancakes, cucumber. Chicken, cashew nuts, mix of veg. I bought lots of veg and some more chicken to make soups. Sausages, onions, ale to make sausage and mash. Mince, pancetta, onions, passata, mushrooms, red wine and pasta for spag bol. A few ready made salads, yogurts, two cartons of fresh orange, milk, biscuits, jam, crusty loaf, toast loaf, bacon, dp frozen bits

twinsetandpearls · 12/08/2008 10:23

On mobile so only short messages so will continue. Eggs, shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, bubble bath. Flour, a few bottles of beer and cider. Ham for sandwiches, crossiants, butter.

SoupKitchen · 12/08/2008 10:24

IMO sunday roast is cheap.
Meat, about £6-7 but will last for several meals( cold next day/curry etc)
Potatoes, carrots, peas, and one other veg
Gravy made from meat juice
Yorkshire puds

How on earth do you make that £30? I make the veg and extras £1-2 tops

twinsetandpearls · 12/08/2008 10:41

If we get a chicken that is about £10. We witt them have sausages in bacon another £5. Roast potatoes, colcannon, parsnips, mash swede and potato. That will come to about £7. Wine about £8 if we have no guests. There is still pudding to do. If we do beef you need to add at least a fiver to the meat. No pigs in blankets but would do cauliflower cheese so again about £5 and have things in for yorkshire but would need to buy extra eggs.
In a house with two cats and a dog there is never left over meat.

lucysmam · 12/08/2008 10:52

twinset, thats a hugely expensive roast dinner!!! joint of beef for 3 that will do 2 meals a fiver off market, veggies for the week a couple of quid, big bag of spuds about £1.50 from netto/asda/co-op, yorks puds are cheap to make n so is gravy!!!

cazzybabs · 12/08/2008 10:57

I spend about £75 a week for 5 of us (although dd3 is only 8 months). It is hard to get it all for that though.
