Most underrated foods? Basic or fancy.

I love reading about the history of food and recipes and how we ended up eating what we do. Along the way some foods have become commonplace and some are sought after and celebrated (mostly because expensive).

I am here to celebrate the pea. That pretty and delicate little green ball that I can’t believe comes in giant bags for £1.50. How is it so cheap? Why don’t people appreciate it? A dish of peas with butter and mint is divine. They are so delicious and delicate and pretty. Did people appreciate them properly when they had to remove them from their pods and could only eat them fresh for a couple of weeks?

Other things that absolutely punch are sesame oil, sumac, balsamic vinegar. Why are they not more expensive?!

I love peas. But why ruin them with butter and mint?! Peas should not be greasy.

An apple, a fresh apple is a lovely, incredibly cheap, thing of beauty.

My mum's favourite vegetable is the runner bean but they seem to have all but disappeared unless you grow your own.

Not those round haricots verts that not even French people like, despite them all having a few packs of the damn things in their freezers.

Give it a few years though and runner beans will be all the rage again.

Baked beans and white bread with a generous scrape of butter. Optional Worcestershire sauce and if your fancy a egg or cheese the perfect mid week meal imo.

I love peas I put malt vinegar on mine (don't knock it)

My contribution is a boiled egg. You can have it soft with soldiers hard mashed in a cup. The obvious mayo, in a salad.or ramen.

Legumes and pulses are cheap to grow, hence why peas, beans , lentils etc. are plentiful and cheap. Many vegetables are. Meat is what is expensive.

Oh, you should come over here!

"Œufs bio, mayonnaise maison" 9,90€ to you, squire.

12€ on the port for the same thing.

It's an egg with a view.

Capers, anchovies and olives.
All three can transform the most basic pizza, or salad, or pasta dish.

Cabbage. It is so versatile and healthy. Yet it's for most pretty "meh" veg

Pears! The most underrated fruit. So delicious and juicy!

PinkPerpetue · Yesterday 20:40

Cabbage. I’m from the era when “greens” were the most eaten vegetable. Today we know that they are so full of vitamins.

Pearl barley! I love pearl barley in a hot pot or an orzotto.

A freshly picked greengage still warm from the sun. Or any fresh plum, really, but greengage especially.

Berries! Raspberries, blackberries, cherries…they are so exquisitely beautiful and delicious, I find them utterly magical. Like little miracles.

The humble egg. Delicious boiled, poached, scrambled.
