...the last bit of mayonnaise out of the squeezey bottle??
Genuinly, I have so many arguments with the rest of the family because they throw them away with loads left

Our nearest M&S stopped stocking mayo in jars a while ago so I bought a squeezy bottle. Nightmare!

It was stored on its lid in the fridge, but nonetheless would only give a pathetic spray, or, when squeezed a bit harder, dump most of the bottle on my plate - if I was lucky... otherwise covering the worktop with a greasy mess.

When 'empty' I resorted to cutting the bottle in half and scraping out the residue. Sad person that I am, I weighed it and it was 10% of the total weight of the full contents.

Every time M&S asked me to complete a survey about my purchases, I moaned about this even if I hadn't bought mayo that day. I also pointed out that jars are much better for the environment. When I cornered the store manager I got the usual reply - 'it's Head Office'.

Anyway, a good ending. They got rid of the cafe and have more space. Mayo in jars has returned. Happy days.

I just vigorously shake until no more comes out then I start the new one. I'm in a very time poor decade of my life, but when I'm not, I'm make my own or scrape.

suggestionsplease1 · 22/09/2026 18:29

I swoop the bottle down in an arc / whipping motion which forces most to the neck to use up, but after that this is the dog's treat in my household (he's safe with them). Somehow his tongue can reach all the way to the bottom and it occupies him for some time trying to get the very last drops out.

Maisymouse2 · 22/09/2026 18:32

Bang it on the bench...then find 1/4 still to be used.
Good in a bad mood.

momager22 · 22/09/2026 18:52

I cut the bottle in half with a sharp kitchen knife then use a thin silicon spatula to scoop it out

Meandthegherkin · 22/09/2026 18:52

The M&S olive oil one only comes in jars and I’m never touching anything else

I swing the bottle hard in one direction, lid downwards, rather like one does with a newly born kitten which isn't breathing.

mumumental · 22/09/2026 20:06

I prefer the glass jars anyway. If I’m feeling fancy, I make olive oil mayonnaise myself. It’s pretty quick.

X post , thank you @maureenponderosa

I made it tonight and timed myself. Full transparency, it was 4 minutes in the end, but I am probably over-cautious with my initial oil drizzles.
If you do make my recipe, I’d like to make a slight adjustment. 3/4 tablespoon of vinegar. 2.5 tablespoons of Dijon mustard.

maureenponderosa · 22/09/2026 17:53

It takes a few minutes in reality.

Mix with stick blender one egg, tablespoon of vinegar, two tablespoons of Dijon mustard, teaspoon of lemon juice, bit of salt. Then slowly drip oil into the mixture until it’s starting to emulsify. Then you can increase the speed you pour the oil until you’ve got the right thickness.
Spoon into jam jar. Throw everything in the dishwasher.

It’s astonishingly fast, satisfying and delicious. I’ll never buy mayo again.

I don’t believe in low fat food things, but surely reduced UPFs > low fat?

Actually it takes 30 secs you are talking about the traditional way look it up on you tube

Surely it takes more than 'literally 30 seconds' to gather together said stick blender, container, eggs, oil and whatever else goes into mayonnaise? Then you have to clean up afterwards.

How long does it last when you've made it?

I know MN doesn't eat 'low fat shite' but many people buy reduced fat mayo, which is probably not possible to make at home.

It takes 30 secs to make, if you want to be pedantic add the time to gather ingredients
I discount that because it’s easy for me as I have a tidy organised kitchen
i have no idea how long it lasts because we eat it and I make it fresh when we want more

GripGetter · 23/09/2026 09:32

I buy Russian mayo in squeezy bags. From a Russian shop. It's my guilty pleasure. Much better and keeps far longer than squeezy bottles, or jars which let the air get to it.

@BusyExpert & @maureenponderosa please can you share your " Literally. 30 seconds " and "no time at all" recipes . I'd like to give them a go.

I told you where to look

so if you want to know I suggest you try there

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 23/09/2026 09:49

For mayo I usually buy jars but occasionally have squeezy. Just taking the lid off and scooping out the last helping with a (clean) finger is fine if its been stored lid-down. I also have the long-handled mini-spatulas mentioned upthread, and will use the last dregs by making the bottle a shaker for a salad dressing if nothing else clears it

For DC's ketchup we always have squeezy as I can't get the 50% reduced sugar and salt version in jars. I cut them in half with a bread-knife when nearly done.

Waitingfordoggo · 23/09/2026 09:50

Jars. You can scrape them out with a spatula and they’re less bad for the environment than plastic.

We’re all passionate about mayonnaise here, but please do calm down.

Can you unscrew the lid? Tip some olive oil and wine vinegar in to make a salad dressing until it’s properly emptied.

Yes, this is a good idea. I’ve done it with mayo in a jar but for some reason never do it with the squeezy bottles now I think about it! Usually just keep bashing it on the counter to get as much dropped down as possible until I can’t squeeze anymore. Then I’ll sometimes take the lid off and stick a knife or something in, but if I already have a new jar waiting I’ll often just not bother with the knife step and then just rinse it out and chuck it in the recycling (after it’s sat next to the sink for several days with the water in it because I’m clearly lazy).
