Recipe book recommendations for a young couple - easy, modern cooking, attractive book cover.

Any ideas for a cooking/recipe book for a young couple.

First home together, interested in easy, quick, recipes. They eat quite basic foods.

One of them loves books and will want to display them on the shelf in the new kitchen - so something modern and tasteful!

A lot to ask I know but maybe something you have already that you can recommend.

Thanks!

Jamie Oliver - one of his simple, general ones (Ministry of Food, possibly).

Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food is the best one IMO. Not sure if it is modern enough.

Love the colour of the cover and the recipes are lush.

Thank you for some suggestions which I will follow up.

Definitely wanting recipes and cooking of meals, not baking.

I know it is likely that they will ‘google’ recipes, but the love of books is playing in.

Was about to suggest this one! Get them 2 really good non stick roasting tins to go with it (the recipes use 2 different sizes and if you’ve got them it really helps) I borrowed it from my library and have made SO many of the recipes. Lots of them are really quick and easy to prepare.

Maybe a bit exotic for their tastes…🤔😂

I’m not sure this will meet your requirements but I am an experienced cook, and recently came into possession of a second hand book by American author Mark Bittman, called How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. Such a comprehensive book that covers every possible way to deal with vegetables, and a number of variations for each recipe. It has made me think about vegetarian in a new way. He has written a non-vegetarian version and I’d definitely recommend it. So, I’m mentioning it here in case it helps you or anyone else reading.

I love cookery books. My three most recent buys are:
Honey and Co. Daily
Ed Smith - Peckish
Guilia Scarpaleggia - Vegetables the Italian Way
I think any of those would meet your criteria. Of the three, the vegetables book is the one I like the best, but the Ed Smith or Honey & Co might be better for less experienced cooks.

Diana Henry - From the Oven to the Table.

A very attractive book full of wonderful recipes, all of the 'put it all in a tray in the oven' type, without huge lists of ingredients.

The tray bake book has got nothing to do with baking, it's meals you can cook in one tin. Perhaps have a proper look at the link?

It looks amazing. I've got so many cookbooks, something has to be special for me to buy any new ones now. This impressed.

Edited

This looks good.

I saw this in my local bookshop and have also looked at the author’s first book online.

They certainly fit the bill of lovely looking/quality books, with their ‘canvas’ type covers. I need to consider the contents more fully in terms of what my lovely young couple eat!

It really isn’t! All store cupboard ingredients and very easy recipes with lots of shortcuts

Keeping in mind that anything more than a bought in margherita pizza, is exotic for my son! 😂

Very little veg, no salad, no herbs, no fish…

It would be great to expand his tastes and skills, but will need to be in small steps!

Ive recommended this one to others, and bought it as a gift a couple of times too.

Dishoom for aesthetics.
One of the Roasting Tin ones if they’ll actually use it, I have the green one but quick one would be good too.

suki1964 · 19/06/2026 21:26

Jamie Oliver - any of them

Basic ( as in fool proof guide ) Delia Smith complete Cookery Course , not the most modern, but its solid

I also love HairyBikers Indian cookery - so simple. Not at involved as Madhur Geoffrey but great take away style recipes

And Ken Hom for Chinese. Hes American/ Asian so give so may pure Asian dishes, using western ingredients and also give the recipes for the western style Chinese
