Recipe book recommendations for a young couple - easy, modern cooking, attractive book cover.

Any ideas for a cooking/recipe book for a young couple.

First home together, interested in easy, quick, recipes. They eat quite basic foods.

One of them loves books and will want to display them on the shelf in the new kitchen - so something modern and tasteful!

A lot to ask I know but maybe something you have already that you can recommend.

Thanks!

You could opt for a classic. I'm assuming the other won't have any interestinthe book.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Smile

I wouldn't like the Midnight Chicken one but I tend to read cookbooks for ideas not how tos.
For how tos I'd go for Delia or Nigella, I think.

For looking nice on a kitchen shelf, I'd pick one with a nice cover.

I'd recommend Meera Sodha 'East' (East by Meera Sodha | Waterstones), which looks pretty and has good not too complicated recipes.
(I'm a vegetarian so tend to not buy cookbooks that aren't).

A man asked me to buy Jamie's Ministry of Food for him, which I did.

Diana Henry - From the Oven to the Table.

A very attractive book full of wonderful recipes, all of the 'put it all in a tray in the oven' type, without huge lists of ingredients.

I came on to recommend this!

From the reviews on big river site:
Mr Edward A Russell
3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely recipes that you will never make

The recipes in this book all look and sound delicious. I however have 2 main issues for which I have duly removed a star a piece.

The first is accessibility. I live in the north of England and am often unable to find fresh okra, fallow deer cheek or pigeon lips in my local supermarket. I have tried substituting with pies and gravy but I’m not sure the end result is as it should be

The second is timing of release which is I suppose intrinsically linked to the first point. If I am reduced to buying plain flour in a plastic bag from a street flour dealer during lockdown, I certainly won’t be able to get a hold of 4 poussin.

All in all the recipes look great as I say, but be warned you can only actually make two of them without a peerage.

It's so good! And as a testament to its straightforwardness, I have used it a lot while I have a young child and not very much active cooking time.

My biggest frustration with some 'quick/easy' meal books is when they require significant amounts of chopping beforehand. It's not a quick meal if it has a long list of ingredients which are supposed to be diced...

The tray bake book has got nothing to do with baking Hmm

OP said she wasn't interested in books on baking, do you know what baking is, as opposed to cooking?

Yes thanks. A tray bake is baked. The clue is in the name.

bake
cook (food) by dry heat without direct exposure to a flame, typically in an oven.

What about one of those books you write recipes in?

You could write a couple of basic recipes in to start them off and maybe a couple of print outs from the Internet.

Was about to suggest this one! Get them 2 really good non stick roasting tins to go with it (the recipes use 2 different sizes and if you’ve got them it really helps) I borrowed it from my library and have made SO many of the recipes. Lots of them are really quick and easy to prepare.

This sounds great for all of us!

Yeah, you have to scan the ingredients list for “four onions finely diced”!

@IckyIck don’t be obtuse. The op said baking as in sweet food, cakes, biscuits etc

not food that literally cannot go in the oven

Motherofvoid · 20/06/2026 18:41

What about one of the Mob kitchen ones? They seem quite popular with younger people because they use a lot of social media chefs I believe. If they like the book you could always buy them the annual subscription as a gift.

When I want to buy a new cookbook I always have a scroll through the happy foodie website, maybe worth having a scroll?

@TheGirlWhoLived , I'm not being obtuse. Pies and quiches are baked. Things like macaroni cheese and pizza are baked. They're popular meals.

Georgina Hayden's Greekish
Anything by Nigel Slater, they are older books, but really good.
Jamie Oliver's 5 Ingredient book.
