Quick and filling school day breakfast ideas beyond oats and eggs

We tend to have porridge/oats with a variety of toppings about half the week and some sort of egg based dish the other half. Well, we've run out of oats and the kids have rejoiced that perhaps there'll be something different for breakfast now 😅so thought whilst we wait for the next delivery I'd do some research and see if we can add a little variety.

Any ideas for alternative quick and easy/preparable in advance, family friendly, school day breakfast ideas please?

We love to get elaborate on weekends... shashuka, pancakes, smoothies, tear and share breakfast loaves etc but on school days I want something either ready to go or that I can leave cooking whilst we're getting ready.

We've tried cereal in the past and find it doesn't keep hunger at bay as long as our usual breakfast, so keen to avoid that.

Things on toast. Cook the toast the day before, not as dark as normal. In the morning put on a baking sheet in the oven to warm.

Put baked beans (you can add cheese) in a big jug and microwave.

You can also do tomatoes or kippers

Bacon only takes 10 mins in the oven.

Bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

Kedgeree, probably better made the day before or at the weekend and frozen in single servings.

Kippers, get the ones in plastic with butter. Boil a kettle, put the kippers, including packaging, in to a jug, pour over boiling water and stand for 5-10 mins.

Yoghurt with fruit and / or nuts.

Hummus with pita bread (I often have this), warm the pita in the toaster.

Homemade granola, obviously will need oats, but also desiccated coconut, nuts and seeds, coconut oil and honey to sweeten if you like, peanut butter, spices for variety. Served with milk, Greek yoghurt, fruit etc as an alternative to porridge.

Cheese on toast or toasties.

Peanut butter and banana toastie
Hot weetabix with various toppings
Crumpets with cheese and marmite
Chia pudding (soaked overnight)

Bacon takes 3 minutes in a microwave, enough time to butter some bread and prepare an avocado or tomato.

Banana pancakes, make in advance and then warm up in the oven or microwave

Yogurt bowl! Greek yogurt, granola of choice, sliced fruit/berries, maybe some honey or peanut butter. Sprinkles of seeds? Chopped nuts? Chocolate chips??? Everyone assembles their own, can change toppings daily but keep the same basic principles and choose from a stash of whatever’s in the cupboard

hellospring26 · 15/04/2026 09:31

Greek yogurt

Breakfast muffins, made at the weekend and heated up during the week?

We have cereal for speed, porridge for health and toast/crumpets for taste in our house.

Some nice ideas, but the thought of bacon in the microwave makes me feel quite sick!!

lemoncurdcupcake · 15/04/2026 11:20

@Theraininspainishere I don't have a microwave 😅 and we rarely eat processed meat. But I didn't put that in my OP and very much appreciate people taking the time to respond to my random insomnia question!

Same! It's lovely in the air fryer though!

We do homemade beans in a spicy tomato sauce and you could make them the night before. Same for daal which makes a fantastic breakfast. Full fat proper cottage cheese is great with fruit or smoked salmon. Sardines on toasted rye bread is another go to option for us.

Chia seeds
Honey
And then whatever else we fancy. Usually granola and a banana.

No microwave?

shellyleppard · 15/04/2026 22:10

Batch cook breakfast muffins, zap in the microwave in the morning. Overnight oats?

cheapskatemum · 15/04/2026 22:20

Bagels. I used to slice them & put them in the toaster. Can put any topping that would go on toast or in a sandwich on them. DCs favourites were cheese & Marmite, bacon (I put it on kitchen roll & cooked it in the microwave), or peanut butter.

Inwhitelights · 15/04/2026 23:10

French toast with fruit. You’ll need one egg if you do two slices each, so will be filling. Really quick and easy!

mamaduckbone · 16/04/2026 19:06

Peanut butter and banana on toast, preferably wholemeal / granary but if your son is like mine NOT seedy!
cinammon and raisin bagels, peanut butter again.
crumpets with banana and honey or butter and marmite

MeAndLicorice · 16/04/2026 19:16

We make breakfast quesadillas - cook mixed beans with some tomato paste, spices, sweetcorn. Fold tortilla wraps in half with the beans mixture inside and fry them so the tortilla is crispy. You can prep them in advance, freeze, then cook from frozen in the oven - I usually keep a tub of grated cheese in the fridge anyway so will often sprinkle cheese on top as it cooks. You can serve them with sliced avocado/tomato salsa/sour cream if wanted.

ChocolateBasket · 16/04/2026 19:18

Wow, this all sounds amazing.

It's a rushed bowl of shreddies in our house.

FunnyOrca · 16/04/2026 19:30

In our house we eat a lot of oats, but other favourites:
Chia puddings - very customisable.
Peanut butter and banana toast/crumpet
Gram flour frittata or muffins (make ahead or freeze)
Bagels with edamame hummus (1/2 cup edamame, 1/2 cup chickpeas, lemon juice, 3 stalks basil, olive oil as needed, optional salt, blitzed in the food processor)

EnglishGirlApproximately · 16/04/2026 19:37

I make a few days worth of yoghurt bowls so it's easy to grab and go, or smoothie bowls ,) acai bowls if I have more time.
First layer of fruit, then top with yoghurt of choice and last layer is granola, nuts, seeds or whatever you like for crunch. We all like different variations but it still takes 10 minutes on a Sunday to get a few days worth ready. Ds' current favourite combination is frozen black cherries, honey yoghurt and nutty granola. I like fresh raspberries, natural yoghurt, and granola and a dollop of nut butter.
