Serious question- Just wondered what you use - I have never bought a mandolin as I’m sure i would get carried away and end up slicing y finger ….

I have a food processor and use that, but before I had one I would just slice the potatoes with a knife.

TyneTeas · 12/04/2026 13:15

Some box graters have a slicer on the side

AlPaccacino · 12/04/2026 13:21

I wear a metallic type mesh glove that stops me slicing my fingers when I mandolin stuff.

CoastalCalm · 12/04/2026 13:21

Box grater , I do have a mandolin but refuse to use it and have to leave the room when DH does

CraftyGin · 12/04/2026 13:26

I usually use my food processor slicing attachment, but the last time (Christmas!) it let my down by having worn out bearings. I couldn't bear to slice such a large quantity by had, so I used my spiraliser, and then rough chopped into bite sized pieces - it was great.

marsal · 12/04/2026 13:33

I use my electric meat slicer.

TheFutureIs · 12/04/2026 13:40

I have a mandolin that has a handle that you hold. Near impossible to cut yourself I’d say

notthedogsfault · 12/04/2026 13:41

I’m very clumsy but have managed to use a mandolin for quite a few years now without any injuries - as a PP said, they come with a shield. Sometimes I can’t get the last bit of whatever I’m slicing through with the shield so end up with a slightly thicker bit, but I either just roll with it or use it for something else. I have the OXO one.

saraclara · 12/04/2026 13:41

My mandolin came with something to hold the item I'm slicing, and which protects my fingers.

Notellinganyone · 12/04/2026 13:42

Dauphinoise! I use a sharp knife.

DiscoBeat · 12/04/2026 13:43

I always use a mandolin, but with a holder for the potato so you can't slice your fingers

ThreeMenInAVan · 12/04/2026 13:45

I use a knife but microwave the peeled potatoes first to soften them a little.

FizzingAda · 12/04/2026 13:45

I’ve got a handheld held thing like an Afro comb that you push into the potato (or any veg) so you can hold it steady whilst you slice ready thin with a knife. Cut the top of my finger off with a mandolin 🙄.

tartyflette · 12/04/2026 13:56

I have a manual slicer/grater set which I use for smaller quantities and it has a guide tool; ypu stick one side into the potato and hold onto it as you slide it over the blade. It works fine and is safe but a bit tiresome.
For larger amounts and especially Dauphinois, I use my processor - it has two disc attachments, for thin or thick slices. (Recommend.)

Congratulations on pointing out the small spelling mistake Notelling, we would never have understood the OP otherwise.

FreshAirandSunshine · 12/04/2026 13:59

Had a mandolin, sliced a finger. Gave the mandolin away on freecycle and just use a knife. Slices aren’t as fine but just takes a bit longer to cook through.

Like a suit of armour?!? I want one. Lost the top of my thumb to my mandolin last month

Actually I think the correct spelling is Dauphinois — no ‘e’ — as the word gratin is masculine .
Le gratin Dauphinois.
(I wouldn’t have bothered tp comment except this spelling correction is itself wrong. )

2024namechanger · 12/04/2026 14:30

My DH is the potato slicer. He uses a sharp knife. He has taken great pride in working up to a good speed, and making the slices even. We have a mandolin but he now finds it quicker to slice by hand. He also alternates potato and sweet potato - try it. It’s amazing!!!

I’ve been looking for one of those, where did you get it from?

I was given a mandolin that came with gloves and an attachment to hold the veg/whatever you’re slicing!
I won’t use it without them 😄

EveryKneeShallBow · 12/04/2026 22:26

A knife, couldn’t be arsed washing up the mandolin or food processor.
