heinz macaroni cheese in a tin - is it ok for ds (11months)

Hi i bought some little tins of heinz macaroni cheese (1.4g of salt per tin), heinze baked beans (1.1g per tin) and some alphabetti spaghetti (0.8g per tin). Would these be ok for my 11 month old? I thought they would come in handy for the days where i have to work after dinner so he can have something quick with some veg etc.
This salt thing confuses me, how much can they have over 12 months?

Sounds good to me!

I don't know about the salt, but I bet someone else will

ACCORDING TO FOOD ATANDARDS AGENCY

''The draft recommendations on amounts of salt that babies and children should consume varies with age. The group used information on sodium intakes from breastfeeding to estimate daily target average intakes for infants (0-12 months of age). Draft proposals suggest intakes of less than 1g per day for infants aged between 0-6 months and 1g per day for infants aged 7-12 months old. For children aged 1-6 years, the target average salt intake is 2g per day and for children aged 7-14 years it is 5g per day.''

buy quick cook pasta and sprinkle some grated cheese over it

takes only a minute longer than heating up a tin of goo

and its better for you/him

fullmoonfiend · 17/06/2008 17:07

or use philly cheese on cooked pasta - really nice.

seeker · 17/06/2008 17:07

Too much salt! A small tin of baked beans has more salt than a 6 year old should have in a whole day.

Cook some pasta - bung on some cheese. 12 minutes.

seeker · 17/06/2008 17:08

Sorry - everybody got there first!

Guadalupe · 17/06/2008 17:08

agree with nailpolish, cooking pasta is a very quick meal anyway, sprinkle cheese/olive oil on it with the veg.

fullmoonfiend · 17/06/2008 17:11

so if you wanted to use that tinned stuff it is about the entire day's worth of recommended salt intake - and of course, that is the Max your child should consume. If you factor in a slice of bread here and there, it's suddenly way too much salt for a wee 'un. (esp brown/wholemeal bread (shop bought ) which contains quite a scary amount of salt

geordieminx · 17/06/2008 17:13

Ok, cooking your own pasta is quick .... but its not as quick as bunging a bowl of tinned stuff (sans tin obv) in the micro...

Although it would taste infinitely better - tinned macaroni is vile

pinkyp · 17/06/2008 17:15

didnt even think about bread having salt in!! It was just my hv saying how good baked beans are for ds and i should be giving them to him, there reduced salt and sugar ones too so should i wait till hes 7 before giving baked beans? I'm sure i had them when i was little

IMHO it tastes like shite as well as having too much salt

nailpolish · 17/06/2008 17:16

make your own baked beans

TrinityRhino · 17/06/2008 17:17

when we were little everyone wasn't ridiculously hung up on every little tiny part of salt, sugar, fat etc that passes anyones lips.....

baked beans are very good for you

iMum · 17/06/2008 17:17

nailpolish-i need to know how you do that-tell me!!

pinkyp · 17/06/2008 17:18

ok i'm not much of a cook, i make mash, veg, and meats, spag bol, lasengya (cant spell) and then sandwhiches, toast, pasta things and thats about it. How do u make ur own baked beans?

pinkyp · 17/06/2008 17:20

yeh according to books and things he cant have alot due to the amount of salt in everything. so i resort back to jars but i dont want to, they dont look nice.

Soak the haricot beans overnight, drain and rinse the next day. Put the beans into an ovenproof saucepan and cover with water, this should reach about 2 cm above the level of the beans. Bring to the boil and cook, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 1 hour, until tender.

then make a simple tomato sauce with onions, garlic (preference)

purpleduck · 17/06/2008 17:26

ewwww! (to op)

It is vomit in a tin

Melted boursin on pasta is gorgeous (and I bet it's more nutritious than the Heinz tins, that stuff looks horrible, sorry).

FruitynNutty · 17/06/2008 17:43

Ooooh I love macaroni cheese in a tin I ate gallons while preg! Delicious on toast! yes I know normal people think it's gross

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/06/2008 17:44

The macaroni cheese is vile.

Twiglett · 17/06/2008 17:44

I give dd baked beans (reduced salt ones) very occasionally and she sometimes has ravioli (sp?) she is 15 months. I usually give it to her for lunch but she only has 1/2 a small tin with some veg... And only about once a month..
