Savoury breakfast for weightloss ideas BUT

NoCereal · 27/02/2026 15:13

I can’t eat eggs, tomatoes or mushrooms.

I’m trying to lose weight and have been advised that regularly skipping breakfast for 30odd years hasn’t been very good for me and to try breakfast daily.
I just don’t know what to eat. My usual first foods don’t appeal first thing in the morning.

Cheese and veggie quesadilla
Bagel or toast with either cottage cheese or ricotta and seeds
Stewed fruit if hot sweet food is okay for you
Protein pancakes (1 banana, 2 eggs, scoop protein powder, pinch of baking powder)
Potato hash (swap for sweet potato and pad out with veggies)
Smoothies if sweet drinks are okay for you

Avocado on toast !!
Sprinkle some chillies flakes and salt mash and use a small loaf of bread like hovis No sugar one that's healthy and savoury

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/02/2026 17:19

Yes to bagels- a bagel with a bit of cream cheese plus cucumber/gherkin

Pineneedlesincarpet · 27/02/2026 17:28

Smoked salmon on a bagel. With scrambled eggs.

Stuffed red pepper. I use an egg and harrissa paste but couscous would be nice

Scandi breakfast of prawns and smoked salmon and pickled herring with dill and gherkins. Or toast with a slice of cheese and tomato which I love. You don't have to use loads of cheese.

Tortillas with lots of grated carrot and spinach and houmous.

Thanks all for the good ideas and to @Kirschcherriesfor the supportive words, I’m definitely going to give a few a go.
I really wish I loved eggs, mushrooms etc, my kids do and it’s so easy!
To those that have said it’s not going to help or just to keep skipping it, as I’ve said I am aware that skipping breakfast is very unlikely to be making me overweight. I just really want to appease the nurse. I feel she didn’t believe my food diary and thinks I’m eating snacks all day. I’m not.
Although I did have two pieces of bacon and a slice of sourdough this morning and way felt less knackered after my workout (I usually need a nap afterwards) so maybe some good will come out of it.

I have to lose weight it’s non negotiable so am trying to be open to what the GP surgery are suggesting.

Losing weight is about the amount of calories you eat in a day. Think of it like money. You have 1800 calories for example to spend in a day. You could spend 500 on a single egg McMuffin, or you could spend it on yoghurt, fruit, bacon, sliced bread. It’s about trying to keep yourself full on the amount of calories you can “spend” a day. You can eat those calories spread throughout the day, or only in 2 meals. If doesn’t matter, it’s about how many calories you eat in the day that counts.

HarryVanderspeigle · 27/02/2026 19:50

To be full, you need protein. Work out what fills you up for a long time, so it doesn't just lead to snacking.

Edamame bean guacamole on wholemeal seeded toast.
Nut or seed butters on toast.
Sweetcorn fritters with Soured cream and smoked salmon or bacon.
Congee with chicken.
Pancakes made with half oat flour (ready brek works) and unsweetened protein powder such as pea protein. Serve with berry compote instead of syrup or chocolate spread.
Sausage sandwich - not low calorie, but filling.
Home made oat bars made with seeds, ground hemp/flax, fresh or dried fruit and minimal sugar. Dry, so no slimy texture, like porridge can be.
Cottage cheese on crackers/rice cakes of choice.

If you like peanut butter but have allergies in the house then give sunflower seed/almond/macadamia or cashew butter a chance.

You said that the nurse gave this advise and I’m just wondering if they’ve run any diagnostic tests to understand if there may be metabolic/physical reasons why you are struggling to lose weight?

Have you had a HbA1C and thyroid panel run? Especially if you are around menopause age or had a child within the last couple of years. Oth can affect thyroid function and both can cause diabetes or insulin resistance.

BuckwheatBlini · 27/02/2026 20:01

Would you eat a smoothie? I like frozen banana/oats/almond milk/protein powder measured out

Beautifulsunflowers · 27/02/2026 20:14

Avocado on sourdough

plain buttered toast - seeded bread ?

ham and cream cheese bagel

mondaytosunday · 27/02/2026 20:16

You don’t need to eat breakfast. You especially don’t need to eat breakfast if you aren’t hungry. What you need to do is eat at a deficit and track what you do eat.
I do like eggs but you could remove them from what I eat, so that means:
high protein slim bagel, two slices streaky bacon, avocado and a handful of cherry tomatoes.
Alternatively, high protein regular bagel, 50 grams smoked salmon, handful of tomatoes.
Spinach leaves would be a nice addition to both.
Both fill me up til lunch.

VividDeer · 27/02/2026 20:43

Just skip breakfast and have fruit / yoghurt if you cant make it to lunch.

Thanks, I do know about calories. I’ve lost three stone already by reducing calories however as I said previously I’ve plateaued for a year now just losing and gaining the same few pounds.
I’m really struggling to stick to the lower amount of calories now.

Thanks I’ve had loads of blood tests done to try and get to the bottom of the tiredness. Everything is in the normal range.

It can really help with weightloss to have a protein heavy breakfast as it leaves you feeling fuller. 30g of protein is apparently ideal. I tend to eat dry fried smoked tempeh for smoked tofu for breakfast these days.

I’ve never tried tempeh or tofu. I’ve always been a bit scared of the texture.

I make these for bake sales where I need a vegan option but they might work for a quick breakfast (they freeze ok). I usually make in a tray and cut into squares. Chickpea flour doesn't appeal to everyone but I think it's ok.

There are basically two reasons why people sometimes think it might be a good idea to make yourself have breakfast.

One is that lack of breakfast makes you feel hungrier throughout the day and so you end up eating more than you otherwise would as a direct result of not having eaten breakfast. If this really is the case, then yes it might be a good idea to fill yourself up a bit earlier in the day.

The other is that your body enters a kind of "starvation mode" if you don't eat enough: it somehow senses that you're unable to obtain food, and so decides to store fat (by magically producing additional mass out of nowhere). People who hold these beliefs often also go on about fast and slow metabolisms and say "you're not eating enough to lose weight". This is just fat logic. It's absolute nonsense.

If you don't want or need breakfast, don't eat it!

Cup of tea and a fag?

I love peanut butter but DC are allergic. I could try almond butter though.

I’m just like how you’ve described yourself, op. Most things make me feel sick and queasy in the morning when I eat (e.g. Greek yogurt).

I’ve recently tried almond butter and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s more savoury than peanut butter and a bit more palatable in the morning.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 27/02/2026 21:33

Skipping breakfast is completely fine… it’s counterintuitive to eat more to lose weight when you don’t even want breakfast. Most people who do intermittent fasting don’t have an early meal.

Nurses aren’t weight loss specialists or even dieticians - that’s not their specialism. I’ve lost almost 20kg and never eat breakfast.

I’d say don’t eat if you don’t want to. Have a glass of juice or half a bagel thin with cottage cheese or avocado if you want but don’t force yourself.

dippy567 · 27/02/2026 21:36

I make pancakes with half flour and half oats or oatmeal, no added sugar and then defrosted frozen berries and a squirt of honey...would that work?
