Feeling nostalgic! What are your favourite, tried and tested recipes by St Delia of Norwich?

OP posts:
Ohjoyohbliss · 16/02/2026 23:18

Rhubarb crumble ice cream.

daysofpearlyspencer · 16/02/2026 23:20

Cheesy enchiladas, my go to for vegetarians

CoolFineDoneWicked · 16/02/2026 23:33

God, so many, I cook from her books every week. She's the best. Off the top of my head:

Ragu
Moroccan chicken
Chicken basque
Thai green curry
Guacamole
Pad Thai
Aligot
Meatballs
Tomato sauce
Quick blender mayonnaise (make this every few days, using a stick blender)
Boston baked beans
At Christmas I do her mincemeat, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding (adapted a bit), sausage rolls, loads of the pickles.

Tickingcrocodile · 16/02/2026 23:39

Her braised red cabbage recipe always turns out well at Christmas.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/02/2026 23:41

My favourite is chicken with grapes:
Shredded chicken breasts, mayo, single or dbl crm, salt, pepper, chopped spring onons, fresh tarragon leaves, lots of halved seedless green grapes. Serve on a bed of little gem. She suggesyed a lentil and brown rice salad to go with but we usually have new potatoes and a tomato and rocket salad.

From the summer cook book: roasted veg with goats cheese, leafy greens on a bed of cous cous with harissa dressing, with roasy lamb.

Rhubarb crumble ice cream.

I love the rhubarb crumble ice cream but sadly the children turn their noses up at it. They do however love her equally good lemon meringue ice cream 😋

SeaToSki · 17/02/2026 11:20

Chicken with sherry and vinegar
tomato baked risotto
everything christmas
chocolate pots
souffle
salad with hot camembert dressing
the list just keeps going on

GreenEyesIsBack · 17/02/2026 11:25

Her carbonara was the first thing I ever learned to cook.
Chicken basque
Caesar salad
Lemon meringue ice cream
Chocolate bread and butter pudding

Spinach ricotta lasagna with pine nuts

soo good

Celiathebanshee · 17/02/2026 11:46

Sausages in cider are a 70s classic that everybody still loves
I won't use anybody else's pavlova or yorkshire pudding recipe
Jean's gingerbread (I don't know who Jean is)
Moussaka

You can't go into the kitchen of anybody my age (52) without spotting a copy of the complete cookery course, and they are always missing the cover and usually the spine, and so well used

That's good too.

NewNameNewMeNow · 17/02/2026 12:55

I love her roast veg lasagne and pesto risotto salad.

OrsolaRosso · 17/02/2026 12:56

Another vote for her Moussaka. Though I have adapted it slightly over the years.

Supergluerules · 17/02/2026 13:27

I am going to revisit my cookbooks, for me it's
all in one white/cheese sauce
gazpacho
leek, onion & potato soup
toasted goats' cheese w blackened sherry vinegar
potato salad w shallots and vinaigrette
roasted figs w gorgonzola & honey vinegar sauce
classic victoria sponge

This evening I'll make bread pudding, my MIL used to make it for my DH and I guess it's my turn now.

All hail St Delia!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/02/2026 13:29

Gammon with port, oranges with cloves in, spaghetti bolognese, boiling an egg (🤣). She’s a goddess.

I have the black separate cookery books. When I had my Canadian boyfriend years ago he bought his mum a complete cookery course (Delia) book.

randomnamegenerated · 17/02/2026 13:31

Shepherd's pie with cheese crusted leeks
Confit of cranberries for serving with game

Her oven baked risotto recipes are a fantastic cheat

suburburban · 17/02/2026 13:43

Yes the brown cookery book

i don’t use it as much now but it was invaluable in the 90s with no internet

Now now Nigella !

rbe78 · 17/02/2026 16:00

A second vote for the chicken basque.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 17/02/2026 16:04

I'm not still making them but mainly because I don't cook as much now. But from memory:
Cheese, onion and olive scones.
2 types of Christmas cake.
Sage and onion loaf.
Chocolate truffle torte.

Her recipes are great and from what I can remember, pretty foolproof.

fruitpastille · 17/02/2026 16:21

All in one sponge (obviously now from memory but learned from her book)
Damp gingerbread (always a massive hit when I take it to work)
Banana bread and flapjack
Chocolate bread and butter pudding (every Christmas)
Carbonara risotto
Many more but these are the most used.

fruitpastille · 17/02/2026 16:22

Oh, and potato, leek and onion soup.

I think that’s the one I have it’s lost its cover and has been sellotaped to hold it all together. It has come out every Christmas for the past forty years😀

Just got Delia off the shelf for pancakes! It’s a well-splattered page
