What is your household income if you shop at Ocado?

I appreciate there will be wider context to this if you wanted to share such as number of people in your home, but I’m just curious. I want to switch to Ocado, friend thinks it’s for “rich” households. I currently have a weekly budget of £120 for family of 3/4 (I say 3 or 4 because due to lifestyle we are often only down to 3 people!) and this does not need to include lunches in the week or cleaning stuff (when it’s school holidays I increase the budget for lunches). Friend thinks you need a £200 p/w budget.

I use Ocado. I like their own brand stuff and also like the Tesco price match - I often get a couple of quid back.

TheMateofOphelia · 15/02/2026 17:14

We budget for £150 a week for the grocery shop. We have always used online delivery and switch to ocado when they started doing m&s.

Agree with pp that the main plus is you always get what you ordered. The delivery drivers are always brilliant too.

RinielUrban · 15/02/2026 17:14

Average out about 150 a week. We’re retired

PuzzlingRecluse · 15/02/2026 17:15

I like that if they are more expensive than Tesco you get a voucher for the difference, I’ve used them just over a year now, vast majority of my shops were cheaper. Loads of offers for new customers. Like anywhere I guess it depends if you meal plan and budget or buy random things you fancy

they definitely have less subs/missing items than when I shopped elsewhere (looking at you Asda)

agree delivery drivers are always fab

Namechange6578 · 15/02/2026 17:22

I use Ocado, if you buy the own brand and offers I don't think it's loads more than Sainsbury's etc. Also nice if you want a treat there is m&s ranges and some other brands you don't see often.

Also the fact it comes in bags is so much easier. They also hardly ever have subs or missing items!

We spend between £100-£180 a week, 2 adults 2 kids. Do also get little shops at Lidl, Aldi (basics and special buys!) local butchers etc so do spend more than this total. We do like a drink tho so booze adds up to a fair bit of this!

shortsaint · 15/02/2026 17:22

In my opinion it is way cheaper than Sainsbury’s. We used to use Tesco online but the local M & S closed and we like how they stock their stuff. Spend no more than £100 pw. Not all their own stuff is great. We top up at Lidl if needed. They do price match so sometimes we get a voucher to use the next week. Household income is probably a bit above average.

Ocado is the only delivery service that delivers what you ordered. All the others, you’re lucky if you get half your order.
So its Ocado, or big shopping trips with teo SENds kids in tow. Ocado it is.

Same. We're a SEN household with allergies and an in-person shop is a hard no. But ocado has lots of allergy options and they actually arrive (cough looking at you, tesco). We're not buying champagne and lobster so the totals are around the same for us and we actually get the food the DC need

Mirrorxxx · 15/02/2026 17:35

I use Ocado as thy have way less substitutes. Only buying for 2 adults so spend max 100 a week usually. Household income 120-150k

DyingDeclaration · 15/02/2026 17:37

We switched to Ocado from Sainsbury’s a few months ago, mainly because because we wanted the fixed weekly delivery slot option. As other have said if you shop the offers and their own brands it doesn’t have to be excessive. We are a hungry family of four with two ravenous teenagers and probably spend circa £130 a week on Ocado but top up in our local Morrisons through the week as well. I’d say we’re spending a fraction more than we did on Sainsbury’s but it’s worth it for the fixed slot which due to busy lives has been worth it.

When I switched Tesco - Ocado I did the exact same shop in each app and they came out the same to the penny. It’s definitely not for the wealthy, you can get expensive stuff but just don’t buy it… I wouldn’t do a shop solely M&S or Waitrose, that is posh. Your friend is wrong.

bryceQ · 15/02/2026 17:39

I love Ocado. Never have replacements. Always perfect service. And can get m&s bits which is a bonus. And makes me sound really rich and posh 😆

PuzzlingRecluse · 15/02/2026 17:54

Reading this I’m now wondering if my neighbours think I’m posh 😂😂

Mumofoneandone · 15/02/2026 17:55

We moved from Sainsbury's to Ocado for various reasons. I think £120 probably reasonable for a weekly shop for 3/4. Ours is a bit more than that but that's down to my husband not stock checking properly each week......
Never any issues and food is fresher than Sainsbury's, as it's from a warehouse rather than shop floor. Had lots of issues with Sainsbury's deliveries!
There are a handful of things we still have to go to Sainsbury's for once a month or so.

Tintarella · 15/02/2026 18:00

We do Ocado. I love the M&S stuff but that's obviously where things can get significantly more expensive. I don't particularly rate own-brand Ocado fruit and veg but the service is by and large pretty good.

Mosman2020 · 15/02/2026 18:03

I buy everything on offer, so its no more than any other supermarket

Username19893847477374 · 15/02/2026 18:03

I spend between £50 and £80 a week on ocado. I think it's great. I'm a single parent, two primary kids. Rarely have substitutios, they do often arrive earlier than the slot I've booked which I find annoying.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 15/02/2026 18:40

@PuzzlingRecluse I live on a council estate and I'm often wondering if I'll see myself on a benefits "how does she afford all this" thread one day!Grin

NewYearNewMee · 15/02/2026 18:43

2 people in our house, we spend about £180-250 per week, depending how many days my DH is travelling for that week. For more weekday meals! Sometimes will include random cleaning or other bits if I spot them, but tend to get those bits and pet food separately.

blankcanvas3 · 15/02/2026 18:43

About £250 per week on mostly food with a few household bits, 5 of us including a v hungry 17 year old boy which pushes the price up. DH is a very high earner but doesn’t have a set income

BloodandGlitter · 15/02/2026 18:46

Disability benefits here. £100 a week at Ocado for 3 of us. I use the flash sales heavily and 90% of our meat comes from them.

Placestogo · 21/02/2026 15:22

About £170 a week for a family of 5 including 3 teenage boys. I buy some of the meat and fish elsewhere and some of veg and fruits elsewhere

ParisianLady · 21/02/2026 15:25

We are around £140/150 a week for everything including some lunches and cleaning products. Not including milk and some extra veg.

Love Ocado, excellent quality and variety, and price matched to Tesco.

Silverbirchleaf · 21/02/2026 15:33

My weekly shop at Ocado is usually around £125 per week (me, dp, young adult son). I find the Ocado prices comparable to Tesco etc, and some us cheaper.

Morrisons offered me a months free delivery recently. Every week there were substitutions and the choice of food was far smaller.

Birchwoods · 21/02/2026 15:37

I don’t find Ocado to be any more expensive than Sainsbury’s if you’re just buying their own brand stuff, and if it comes in higher than the equivalent shop at Tesco they send you a voucher for the difference. The basics are all exactly the same price as Sainsbury’s and even Aldi.

OcadoQT · 21/02/2026 15:37

Thanks all, I did my first shop this week which was £100 (I get veg from Riverford, doesn’t include lunches.

The only things that were noticeably more expensive was tuna, pepperoni and hard cheese.
