Foods that will fill me up and stop me eating like a pig

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:01

I am always hungry, well ok, I can go about an hour after eating a meal, but them I am hungry again, so consequently I am eating like a pig, and am not liking the result.

What foods generally fill you up and stop you snacking between meals ??

porridge. or fruit. or lightly cooked veg.

or have a cup a soup instead of something solid.

drink a large glass of water before you eat a meal, it will help you to eat less.

thirst can often be mistaken for hunger.

bluefox · 15/06/2008 13:07

IB I too woud like to know. Im sure everyone will suggest fruit BUT fruit always makes me ravenous!

maidamess · 15/06/2008 13:08

Tell us what you are eating during the day at the moment so we can judge help

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:09

Hmm, I really don't think fruit would do it.

ready brek will prob be ok, never had it myself.

maybe you need to go a few days just feeling hungry so that your stomach shrinks. the more you fill it up the more it will stretch and the more you need to eat to feel full.

have you tried all the eating slowly, chewing your food properly stuff?

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:12

Ok

Toast for breakfast, normally 2 slices, maybe 3 on a weekend.

Lunch is normally a sandwich, 3 peices of bread with either cheese and salad on or ham and salad.

Dinner will then be something like tuna pasta bake, or salmon, new pots and veg.

Then I will often have either more toast or cereal for supper.

salad. eat loads and loads of salad with a nice dressing on?

maidamess · 15/06/2008 13:13

What is so wrong with feeling hungry? It means you have an appetite and will enjoy your next meal, doesn't it?

I speak as someone who will avoid feeling hungry at any costs, and I am curious as to why the feeling of mild hunger is such a big deal for us....

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:13

Does eating more slowly help you feel full up then ??

I do eat far too quickly at the mo.

My biggest problem is bread.

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:13

Because when I feel hgunry, I eat too much.

protein and high fibre, non-processed carbohydrates
eg brown bread
oats
brown rice
etc

also a certain amount of fat helps you feel full - don't go completely low fat

maidamess · 15/06/2008 13:15

STOP GOING IN THE KITCHEN

mankymummy · 15/06/2008 13:15

have you tried cutting out bread, having cereal for breakfast, salad for lunch and something other than toast for supper?

i feel hungry quite quickly after eating bread, i think its because you get a sugar high from the bread and then get a low.

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:15

Hmm I am not keen on brown rice, unless it was just the way i'd cooked it.

Brown bread, I like and it used to stop me eating as much, but now I seem to have got used to it, and have as much brown bread as I would white.

I have tried to go cold turkey with bread on a number of occasions, but I always fail.

Do you think they do rehab for bread addicts LOL.

Sidge · 15/06/2008 13:16

Your diet is very carb-heavy.

I would recommend more protein - cottage cheese, tuna, lean meat, dairy products, eggs, nuts and pulses.

maidamess · 15/06/2008 13:17

IB I think you are going to have to go cold turkey. Its bread, for goodness sake, not heroin!

FrannyandZooey · 15/06/2008 13:17

what about nuts, seeds, dried fruit, pulses like beans and lentils
all healthy and all fill you up for quite a while

mankymummy · 15/06/2008 13:18

eating slowly fills you up because it gives your body time to realise that your stomach is filling up.

you are probably eating too much which is stretching your stomach and making you hungry later.

try drinking glass of water before you eat and then eating slowly.

schedule in a mid morning and mid afternoon snack of fruit or nuts or a cereal bar so you dont have ages to wait until you eat again (and then are tempted to pick).

mankymummy · 15/06/2008 13:19

tried swapping bread for rivita or crackers?

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:20

Franny, I have never in my life eaten anything like that. Which nuts and seeds can you reccomend that taste nice ??

Should have said, I do struggle a bit with some foods at the mo because I have IBS, and i'm still in the working out which foods irritate it phase.

I like salad for example, but at the mo I can only eat small amounts of it or I am ill.

OP posts:
IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:21

It is the bread, I have to stop with the bread LOL.

OP posts:
mankymummy · 15/06/2008 13:23

throw the bread to the birds.

buy rivita and crackers instead.

sorted.

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:26

Ok, I will try once again to quit my bread habit.

Is Museli any good for breakfast ??? I don't actualy like it, but thought it might be worth another try.
