Foods that will fill me up and stop me eating like a pig

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 13:01

I am always hungry, well ok, I can go about an hour after eating a meal, but them I am hungry again, so consequently I am eating like a pig, and am not liking the result.

What foods generally fill you up and stop you snacking between meals ??

Would joining Weight Watchers or Slimming world be a good idea ??

Do you have to be so much overweight to be able to go ??

I wouldn't recommend a diet..they don't work! Change your eating habits long term.

prudencepinkleg · 15/06/2008 20:08

Aren't low GI foods meant to be good for filling you up? I don't know many off the top of my head but the idea is that they are slow burn and so keep you going for longer.

IB (please change your name back!)

Anyway, you probably need more complex carbohydrates or starchy food

Bananas, beans, potatoes, root veg, pasta nuts, oats etc (btw Ready Brek is a form of porridge, have it with sliced banana)

You need some carbs otherwise you'll be starving!

I'm doing WW atm (I do have a few stone to shift). I've totally ditched bread at breakfast time as two slices of toast doesn't get me past 10am! Instead, I'm having a big bowl of fresh strawberries or pineapple with yoghurt or fromage frais on top and I can easily get to luunchtime on that. I do have bread of some description then, usually a pitta, or wholemeal roll, or wholemeal bread, filled to the rafters with salad and either some ham or chicken, or tuna. Usually follow with some more yoghurt or a banana. This is plenty to see me through until dinner time and I'll have whatever I'm making for everyone.

If I do want something in between, I'll have a cereal bar (oaty one) which will keep me going.

I don't think you have to need to shift masses of weight to join WW etc. Some people only have half a stone to shift and go. It might well help and give you more ideas about choosing food wisely, so that you are fuller for longer on what you eat. HTH

Sugar makes you hungry.
So many things have it in but if you look on the ingred list look for

Carbohydrates (of which sugars) and if it is over 10 - I wont eat it! (I am trying to lose weight tho - not sure if you are?)

The thing with sugar is that once you eat it it shoots your insulin up sharply - which then also sharply crashes down. It's the crashing down of insulin that makes you hungry / tired etc.

If you don't want to feel hungry all the time you need to keep your insulin steady, which means eating foods with a low glycemic index (low GI).

Keeping insulin steady is good for good health in general (not just weight loss) as it is thought that constant peaks and troughs of insulin could lead to type II diabetes in later life.

There are loads of books on low GI diets (and info on tinterweb) and it is not about avoiding carbs - it's about avoiding the refined sugar type of carbs.

Hope that helps

DKMA · 15/06/2008 21:29

Ok low GI stuff can include:

Stoneground wholemeal bread
wholemeal pasta / rice
Shredded wheat is a great cereal
Some yoghurts(sp?) (check carb of which sugar) I find Irish yoghurts the lowest
Humous (reduced fat)
Musli - no added sugar variety (some are loaded with sugar)

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 21:50

Thanks all.

Have decided to do the cereal diet for 2 weeks, whilst I look into a low carb, or the right type of carbs diet, and then I will switch to that after.

As far as cereals go, other than porridge or weetabix, what else is there that won't contain loads of sugar. I can't eat bran flakes or shredded wheat as both irritate my stomach.

i'm late to this, so it may have already been said
if you are wanting to eat an hour after a meal, you are not hungry. it is either thirst, or a nervous habit. my advice is to drink a large glass of water every time you feel like this

Aero · 15/06/2008 21:54

Quaker Oat Crisp are nice and not full of sugar. (My Mum is diabetic and always on the lookout for low sugar cereals and she can have this one).

IllegallyBrunette · 15/06/2008 21:55

Thanks Areo, will look out for that one then.

That sounds like a good tip Stitch, so I will definatly try that. I think you might be right about it being a nervous habit.

IB - no, no, no!!!! Don't do the cereal diet. I can promise you that it will make you feel shit and your hunger pangs will be even worse. You will make your insulin levels shoot up, with a consequent crash very swiftly. You will not only feel hungry but are also likely to feel shaky as your blood sugar crashes through the floor.

And if you're an IBS sufferer it's a recipe for sure suffering.

If you want a period of 'safe' eating while you do your research, stick to simple proteins and veg/salad - much better for you as well as you will get appropriate and natural nutrients as opposed to eating foods that have been fortified with chemical vitamins and minerals.

DKMA · 15/06/2008 22:03

I wouldn't recommend a cereal diet either.
I too have suffered from IBS but since following low GI it's just about gone.
Tesco's do an online diet thing which has a low GI option it is fab (you have to pay a bit for it) it does a weekly weigh in and a meal planner which is linked to a printable shopping list. All the meals are explained and are very good / easy.
If you register tonight and print off your shopping list you'll be cracking on with it tomorrow - I got results very fast with this

lovecat · 15/06/2008 22:21

Please don't do the cereal diet, it really will make you feel like crap and you'll get hungrier and more likely to overeat when you come off it. Good quality proteins and greens are the way to go!

This book is very good about why people overeat and changing how you look at food, but it's more about lifestyle and changing patterns of thinking - she actually says at the start of the book that you shouldn't use it if all you're interested in is losing weight, so if you're just after a quick fix for this wedding then it might not be for you... but I've found it very useful.

wasabipeanut · 16/06/2008 09:22

Nuts!! Very calorie dense but a small amount fill you up and keep you going for hours.

If you are getting hungry quickly after eating it sounds like you are eating lots of starch and sugar. This plays havoc with blood sugar.

I've lost quite a lot of weight by dumping most of the carbs and sugar from what I eat. I feel a hell of a lot better for it as well.

tiredemma · 16/06/2008 14:53

I lost 17lbs at Slimming world- you can have my books ( with recipes etc) if you want.

IllegallyBrunette · 16/06/2008 16:53

That would be great emma
