Is it realistic of your childs school to give them poached fish/chilli/curry for lunch and expect them to eat it?

Just a thought. ds doesn't get any choice of what to eat at school so he often goes hungry. If your child were to be fed this at school would they eat it or is my ds being unreasonably fussy?

Chilli and rice (he hates spicy food)
Curry and rice
Smily faces
Poached fish, bolied potatoes, green beans and parsley sauce.
Fish pie

What does your child have for lunch? Enlighten me!

very similar menu at DS school

they recently did a healthy eating week and you could go and sample the food and have lunch with your child

the chilli was incredibly mild, but tasty, and could not be described as spicy or hot, ditto the curry.

they have fish cakes, chips and veg, all homemade... homemade pizza with lots of hidden veg in teh tomato sauce. selections of sandwicehs and wraps for the juniors, all fresh, salad available with every meal.

DS would eat everything except the poached fish, but he would have a go

are packed lunches an option for your DS

llareggub · 13/06/2008 18:21

My son eats all of the above. No idea what smiley faces are though. He is not yet 2 so I am sure he will become fussy at some point...

lulumama · 13/06/2008 18:21

also, irish stew, mushroom tagliatelle, sweet & sour chicken and rice, roast dinner, etc

Marina · 13/06/2008 18:23

Both dcs would eat any of this although if the chili was too strong dd might not finish it

They also have shepherd's pie, roast dinner, proper fish and chips, pasta au gratin, always a salad and always a veggie option

TheFallenMadonna · 13/06/2008 18:24

DS would eat all of that except the parsley sauce (and who can blame him for that? )

In fact, he does.

Staples of ds's school lunches are curry and rice, spaghetti bolognese, fishcakes, sweet and sour chicken, roast prok or chicken.

frogs · 13/06/2008 18:25

Mine would eat all of those, I think. IME the chilli/curry type dishes are incredibly mild, really not spicy at all.

avenanap · 13/06/2008 18:25

So do all of your children go hungry if they don't like their lunch?

sounds pretty good to me. Can you get him used to spicy food? would make life a lot easier

TheFallenMadonna · 13/06/2008 18:28

DS always has a choice of two dishes. I don't think he's ever not liked one of them.

DD will be another matter. I'm counting on peer (and dinner lady) pressure

avenanap · 13/06/2008 18:28

I've tried (over and over and over again). He's hypersensitive, a small bump hurts him alot, a bit of spice must be terrible for him.

At State schools (my sons anyway) they seem to provide unlimited (almost) brown bread and butter...so they won't starve.

lulumama · 13/06/2008 18:28

what does he eat at home aveanap?

what would you like school to offer?

can he take a packed lunch?>

unknownrebelbang · 13/06/2008 18:28

DS1 wouldn't touch most of the food listed.

DS2 and DS3 would eat everything listed.

frogs · 13/06/2008 18:29

Er no, I think they eat the bulk of what's put in front of them. Dd2's lunches are supervised by the nursery teacher, so I do occasionally get some feedback, usually along the lines of 'well, you're definitely getting your money's worth...'

Even if he doesn't like one item (eg. the curry) he should be able to eat the rice, the veg and the pudding, surely?

castille · 13/06/2008 18:32

At my girls' school they have one menu, if they don't like it they eat more bread, and pudding.

I'm no fan of choice - they don't get a choice of meals at home and at least it encourages them to try things they'd otherwise dismiss.

In the UK children come out of school early enough not to be hungry for very long anyway.

avenanap · 13/06/2008 18:32

It's private so Im paying for it. It's one choice only. I did manage to negotiate taking something in when he had curry, it lasted for a short while then his wife stopped giving him the food I had taken in.

He eats salad (some) at home, roast chicken, pasta, cottage pie, the odd burger every 2 months .

He's had poached fish today (not eaten) so he's starving. He's rolling around the floor holding his tummy so I'm going to have to go. Back in a while.

Mine would eat all of those things. What do you think they should be serving?

llareggub · 13/06/2008 18:50

I suspect state schools charge for lunch too!

I guess I could understand why a child might not like curry or chilli, but poached fish? What does he eat at home?

frogs · 13/06/2008 18:51

Er, state school lunches are not free, we pay for them.

dd's eat all of that.

there is always something on the menu they like, and have never gone hungry. i think it has taight them to be less fussy as well.

avenanap · 13/06/2008 18:54

I'm not sure. At his old school he'd just have sandwiches every day. I want to get him to eat a variety of things but it's a constant battle and I don't think it's right that I have to take food in for him, especially as I've paid for his lunch. I only have my experiences of school dinners to go by (chips, chips and chips). I'm just getting annoyed with having to take food in for him.

He'd eat fish fingers not poached fish. I cook curry at home but he never touches it, doesn't like rice so will eat a tiny amount.

I just wasn't sure if this was a normal menu and whether children would eat things like this. I conclude that he's just fussy then.
