I'd like to eat more brown rice but it takes forever to cook ( ok 30-35 minutes). Is there a hack?

like batch cooking it and freezing?

Any suggestions appreciated.

If you soak before hand it cooks more quickly. Also I cook mine in a pressure cooker, much quicker!

minipie · 19/01/2026 00:25

Hmm I cook my brown basmati rice for 20 min.

maudelovesharold · 19/01/2026 00:26

A packet of microwave wholegrain rice takes 2 mins!

My hack.... and I'm not even embarrassed, at 49p.

Microwave pouches.

KrystalStubbs · 19/01/2026 00:27

I always buy quick cook brown rice, cooks in about 15 minutes.

Odditea · 19/01/2026 00:28

Bulk cook and freeze in portions.

Thanks for your replies.
I have had some of the microwave pouches but wasn't sure if the processing involved negate the health benefits.

The only processing involved is cooking it until it is nearly done, then sealing it in a microwaveable packet. We had the Lidl one yesterday. Very good.

I don't have Lidl but the pouches I buy have some added ingredients, including 'vegetable oil' which I have heard is palm oil.

My slightly out there suggestion is to switch to quinoa which has a similar texture and nutty flavour, cooks as quickly as white rice and is very good for you.

Chocoholicnightmare · 19/01/2026 00:51

I bought a Joseph Joseph microwave rice cooker. It's so easy to cook rice in it - put it in and leave it! Should be quicker than 30 min. Microwave rice has oil in it, so cooking it yourself is healthier.

This has been a game changer for my family. We don’t eat white rice anymore, and this turns out perfect every time. One packet is 2 big size portions, or one adult and 2 children.
Im not normally one for convenience food, but this is better than cooking white rice yourself, it tastes good, texture is great, much healthier and no washing up of the rice pan. I can’t make brown rice as nice as this myself.

Brown basmati only takes 17 mins including resting for 3

Which one do you use

If you pre cook it and freeze it in portions it develops resistant starch which is really really good for you

Summerhillsquare · 19/01/2026 02:20

Rice cooker. Do it at the start of cooking and it's ready in 20 minutes. I love brown rice.

Cleanthecoffeemachine · 19/01/2026 02:25

I bulk cook in the Instant Pot then freeze what I don't need that day in portions.
Pour boiling water on a frozen portion and microwave to reheat.

DinoLil · 19/01/2026 02:30

Yep. Buy the microwave pouches of brown rice. As mentioned above!

Yes, strange but true!
Make lots, freeze it in (flat-ish) portions, and defrost it in microwave for 5-6 min tops.

I'm not against a hack but I can't take to microwave rice, more expensive, added oil and more plastic waste for one of the cheapest staples in the world. Also I'm a bit of a smug dickhead about how good I got at cooking rice during covid 😂

OvernightBloats · 19/01/2026 03:02

I use a pressure cooker for brown rice. Anything that takes a long time like chickpeas and beans is much easier to cook in a pressure cooker.

For white rice, I just use a saucepan as it can overcook easily.

NautilusLionfish · 19/01/2026 03:09

i mostly use precooked packs. The sains ones are lit just rice and water so no upf. I have recently discovered the delicious aldi ones that have other grains and pumpkin seeds. But I recently cooked a mix of white and brown rice together. it was delicious and didnt take that long. Try getting the rice on while you do the accompaniment (stew, roast, stir fry, whatever) and it may not feel that long. Soaking is another option.

TheSandgroper · 19/01/2026 03:30

Cook it in the slow cooker earlier in the day. I don’t have a rice cooker but they have their fans.
