A glass measuring jug that doesn’t lose its numbers: the holy grail

Does such a thing exist? I have a cupboard full of Pyrex jugs that are now naked after too many dishwasher trips. I would pay A LOT for just one decent one that lasts!

Ha! I was thinking just the same yesterday OP.
it’s the dishwasher I think … but who can make the effort to handwash them?

MadamWillYouTalk · 30/12/2025 15:09

We have one passed on from MIL where instead of having the measurements printed on, they’re raised on the glass instead. Genius! Unfortunately the spout isn’t the best so you have to be careful or the contents go all over the counter, but at least you know how much is in there 😄

ExtendedDaydream · 30/12/2025 15:11

I have now got a metal embossed one for this reason

My mum had one like that, though the spout was good. But it was The Big Jug, so never as popular as The Little Jug. It had lbs and oz, cups and weights. It was a good Jug.

Ah, this'll be why DH insists on the Pyrex jug being handwash.

SisyphusDad · 30/12/2025 16:26

Before I use mine, I look very carefully at where the remains of the marks are and use a sharpie in the right place.

Burntt · 30/12/2025 17:57

How is Pyrex spelt? If it’s not in capitals it’s not the genuine one we think of as hard wearing. PYREX is the better one. Apparently Pyrex (lower case) is half the market or something

gryffindor1979 · 30/12/2025 17:59

I have an oxo good grips one that’s going strong !💪

ChrimboLimbo · 30/12/2025 18:05

Look in charity shops. I have a pyrex from at least 26 years ago (when my gran died) and she has owned it for years before that.

Still has all its numbers and markings and goes in the dishwasher at least three times or more a week

PuzzlingMonkey · 30/12/2025 18:11

Sounds like there is a gap in the market here! Or I need to look round some charity shops… I would honestly rather pay £20 for a decent quality long lasting one than £5 for something that will be clutter after a year or two.

I had one that was at least 20 years old and still had all the numbers, but DD broke it yesterday! Confused No idea where it was from though.

ExtendedDaydream · 30/12/2025 18:28

Both mine were at least 20 years old and the letters rubbed off a long, long time ago through going in the dishwasher.

rightoguvnor · 30/12/2025 18:44

I have a Pyrex with the red lettering, at least 15 yrs old and goes through the dishwasher at least twice a week. The only sign of west is on the T in Capacity.

BohoGarden · 30/12/2025 18:50

I bought mine in Morrisons, it's Pyrex and the letters are still on a couple of years later. I don't have a dishwasher though, so that might be it.

Musicaltheatremum · 30/12/2025 19:04

My FIL had loads of old pyrex bowls and jugs with numbers. I pinched them when clearing his house and threw out my awful ones that had lost numbers. The old ones were much better

marylou25 · 30/12/2025 20:56

I read the title in puzzlement, my two Pyrex jugs must be over 30/40 yrs old and marks are perfect. But then as I read I see why! I only got a dishwasher few years ago and honestly it's only been used approx half a dozen times a year, for example last week for Christmas and when I have family staying. I'm not sure if the jugs have ever been in there so maybe that is why they are perfect, at least I know now not to put them in!

unsync · 30/12/2025 21:18

I have my mother's small jug (like in the picture) - it has to be about 60 years old and the letters are still good. I also have a larger PYREX 1/2 litre jug which I've had for about 30 years and still OK. Regular dishwasher use for both of them.

Try looking for scientific grade measuring glassware.

Same and same. I went and looked seeing this thread and it’s perfect, all the writing as new. Always goes in the dishwasher.

soupyspoon · 30/12/2025 23:08

I wont allow mine in the dishwasher. OH uses the dishwasher and so I bought my own and it sits in my special cupboard.

Fernsrus · 30/12/2025 23:14

I use a small set of scales, on the mls setting.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 30/12/2025 23:23

My Pyrex jug is over 40 years old and still has the full complement of numbers. I'm guessing that it's your dishwasher that's causing them to be worn away.

ElizaCBennett · 30/12/2025 23:28

I have an old PYREX jug with all measurements intact and a Pampered Chef one with raised glass measurements. Look out for old jugs in charity shops - they are much better quality than the ones you can buy now sadly 🤔

SwedishEdith · 30/12/2025 23:29

My Pyrex ones are fine but one I bought from Sainsbury's about 15 years ago - that looks like a Pyrex jug - has lost all its numbers. Was yours definitely Pyrex?
