OJ has suggested that we all raise a spoon of trifle next Wednesday (Steve's funeral) - seems a fitting thing to do

I have never made trifle and am only vaguely aware of what goes in it (cake, jelly and custard?) but thought I would like to have a go at making it.

Anyone got any good recipes/recommendations to share?

i dont do normal trifle, neither does Peter.

is chocolate trifle ok?

shop bought

Miaou · 11/06/2008 12:05

OH of course misdee! I was presuming people would buy it really (I think Steve was partial to M&S ones). However I'd like to have a go at making one.

Nigel Slater's delightful trifle (his title not mine!) would seem like a good start. For Steve and OJ

I will happily make a trifle and raise a spoon to Steve.

Ledodgy · 11/06/2008 12:09

What a lovely idea. I love trifle and will make one in Steve's honour. I grate a cadbury's flake on top of the cream.

MaryAnnSingleton · 11/06/2008 12:09

I used to make it with sponge cake soaked in sherry and with fruit in it,raspberries usually, then proper custard and topped with Elizabeth's David's everlasting syllabub and either flaked toasted almonds or ratafia biscuits...that is posh version but equally I love MILs sponge, sherry, jelly and fruit with Birds custard and whipped cream on top and I love a Birds packet trifle too with dream topping...

Thank you folks - will take some time to savour this later

does tiramissu count as trifle?

moodlumthehoodlum · 11/06/2008 12:19

What a brilliant idea. The hoodlums house always willing to eat pudding.

Nigella does a good line in trifles I think, I'll dig a recipe out and post it.

FAQ · 11/06/2008 12:19

shan't even try to attempt to make one, but I'll certainly buy one and raise a spoon next Wednesday

rosealbie · 11/06/2008 12:22

JackieNo · 11/06/2008 12:29

what a splendid idea!

I may make my mum's Trifle Alaska, haven't done that for years
(sliced swiss roll, tinned raspberries and custard, but instead of cream you make a meringue topping and flash it under the grill)

Miaou · 11/06/2008 15:11

bump everyone - some great recipe ideas btw!

Mine is simple :-
Either Swiss roll cut up or sponge fingers soak in sherry.
Tin of fruit salad. Then covered with jelly of your choice, leave to set.
Cover jelly with Birds custard.
Finally add whipped cream.
If you like you can add crumbled flake, hundreds and thousands etc.

bellavita · 11/06/2008 15:24

Going to buy a nice M & S one.

naswm · 11/06/2008 15:25

FAB idea!

GinGirl · 11/06/2008 15:28

Waitrose did a fab trife recipe the other month...

  1. Swiss roll, cut into slices and arranged in the bottom of a pretty glsss bowl;
  2. Spoon over framboise liquer (optional)
  3. Pour custard over
  4. Pile on 400g of strawberries or raspberries
  5. Whip cream to soft peaks and heap on top of fruit
  6. Put another 200g fruit on top
  7. spinkle with chocolate shards

Was blinking delicious!

muggglewump · 11/06/2008 15:28

How lovely.
I have a great but totaly cheaty recipe that was my Mum's.

  1. Take one ginger cake.
  2. Cut into squares and press into bottom of trifle dish
  3. Open one tin of mandarins
  4. Pour juice of mandarins over cake
  5. Cover with custard
  6. Cover custard with cream and decorate with mandarins.

Yes, so cheaty but really delicious. I have actually made the whole thing from scratch before and I prefer the cheaty version. It reminds me of my Mum.

I'll make it next week and think of Steve and my Mum as we eat it.

Inquisitive · 11/06/2008 15:35

Lovely idea. Will make my favourite super-easy trifle next week:

Put slices of ginger cake into trifle dish and sprinkle (or slosh) with ginger wine. Cover with slices of tinned pear. Melt a bar of dark chocolate and stir into ready made custard - allow to cool and pour over the pears. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Nemoandthefishes · 11/06/2008 15:39

mmm trifle fantastic idea..although like others will probably be shop bought as I fail miserably when I try to make them

shelleylou · 11/06/2008 15:42
