OJ has suggested that we all raise a spoon of trifle next Wednesday (Steve's funeral) - seems a fitting thing to do

I have never made trifle and am only vaguely aware of what goes in it (cake, jelly and custard?) but thought I would like to have a go at making it.

Anyone got any good recipes/recommendations to share?

Or maybe a dollop of trifle in our rum? A sort of rum float?

What a lovely idea

My nan's trifle recipe (which bears a disturbing resemblance to the Waitrose one posted earlier!):

Swiss Roll, sliced
Slice bananas and sprinkle raspberries over
Slosh Pour sherry (or rum!) all over
Make up a pint and a half of Bird's custard with double the amount of custard specified on the tin (substitute a dollop of cream for some of the milk if feeling decadent) and add a few drops of red food colouring/ribena to make the custard pink
When the custard is set, whip up a load of double cream and slather on top.
Dot with 100's and 1000's, jelly diamonds and silver balls in whatever pattern floats your boat.

Eat with a ladle gusto...

I too will be making BecauseI'mWorthIt's choccy custard trifle very soon... yummingtons!

Wah! Forgot the jelly!

In between the fruit and the custard, make a layer of raspberry jelly, making the jelly up with half hot water, 1 quarter fruit juice (not pineapple) to get a thick jelly.

These all sound so lovely I want to make all of them! On wednesday I may well be surrounded by an avalanche of trifle, and have to eat my way out...

katierocket · 12/06/2008 14:23

lovely idea

swedishmum · 13/06/2008 20:22

My very quick (ie I'm at football training with ds and dh phones to tell me he's invited parents in 25mins...) -
madeira cake, 2 tins of partly drained fruits of the forest or raspberries (used to use the stuff in cartons from M and S). Slosh over some cassis and leave for 5 mins. Pour over some fresh custard, then top with some whipped double cream. Voila!

swedishmum · 13/06/2008 20:23

Think I'll do something with rum, bananas and chocolate to raise a spoon for Steve though.

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 13/06/2008 20:27

What a great idea - I'm not capable of making one but I will definitely go to M&S and get a "Steve's Special".

Mmmm I am making muggglewump's cheaty trifle this afternoon. If I can find a ginger cake, that is , they didn't have any in Lidls this morning.

Anyone else busy in the kitchen?

I've been explaining to the kids why we are having trifle - they thought it was an excellent idea and a nice way to remember Steve.

Right - have decided and bought ingredients for dizzydixies' version.

Off to make now.

Anyone else got tummy ache? I ate too much, it was delicious, thanks for the recipe mugglewump.

Talked to the kids over tea about Jo and Steve and the children. The dds were very moved by it all. It was a lovely idea of yours Jo, and nice to have a way for us to set aside some time to think of you all today.
