What are your favourite recipes from Nigella’s books, ideally either sweet or vegetarian.

I like her vegetable chilli and mattar paneer recipes, although I add lots more spices to the latter.

Her Chocolate Guinness cake is magnificent.

Her meringue gelato with chocolate is so good. I always make her Yule log at Christmas.
Editing to also add her potato and pepper bake is very easy but really tasty.

Ooh. I’ve not come across the bake recipe. Off to search.

I like Strawberry and Almond Crumble. Can’t remember which book.
I didn’t think cooked strawberries would work but they do. This is a good recipe if you get tempted by strawberries out of season and they are hard!

Totally agree. I absolutely love the strawberry crumble. A brilliant way to use strawberries that aren’t all that great.

@eleanormc67Thanks for posting the article. Really interesting. I feel like I’ve wasted years of good meals by choosing cheap chickpeas - am going to have to do some taste testing. And recook the confit chickpeas and see how it is.

His black pepper tofu is great, but I use hardly any of the butter he recommends. I can’t imagine that much would be at all nice.

I'll have a look for that. Thnk you for the heads up.

Do you make them in a muffin tin or the little soufflé dishes (I’ve gone blank as to what you call them!!)

Ramekins?

I've started to note & try the recommendations in the various The Filter articles. Some surprising ones at times, but I now buy different basic extra-mature cheddar & tinned tomatoes than previously. It's great for veggies too, it being The Guardian, as they've also covered the best tofu, veggie sausages etc.

if you do use chickpeas a lot though, it's probably worth cooking a big batch from dried? Especially if you have a slow/pressure cooker? As long as you get them somewhere that has a high turnover - otherwise there's a risk they'll never cook properly!

@soupyspoonthat’s a good idea about siphoning it off. It would be very tasty. Do you use it for anything in particular?

Roasting veg and as a flavouring for Bulgar wheat that sort of thing, cooking chicken in it, fabulous roasted cauliflower from it

Does anybody have the Nigella recipes for Harira from Feast and the lemon cupcakes from Forever Summer? DH has 'helpfully' done a sort of archive of some of my cookery books, which has involved putting them at the back of the top of a very high, deep, wardrobe and I can't reach them even with steps and he's currently recovering from surgery!

If anyone can drop a picture of them in the thread I'd be so grateful. I have a hankering for both!

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 05/12/2025 12:49

@BunfightBetty I had the joy of getting a copy of Forever Summer in a charity shop for 50p this week - give me a moment and I'll find the cupcake recipe.

Rather than take a photo and potentially leave me/mumsnet in breach of copyright (yes, I am an overthinker Grin), here are the ingredients (can't copyright a list of ingredients apparently:

Makes 24
250g self raising fl
250g soft butter
250g caster sugar
4 eggs
1tsp lemon oil
2-3tbsp milk

Icing:
500g Instant Royal Icing Powder
juice of a lemon
24 lemon jelly slices

It uses an all in one method for the cake batter, except for the milk. Add the milk after adjusting the quantity to get a smooth batter. Bake at 200 degrees for 20mins. Icing is just juice into powder.

So kind of you to type this out for me! Thanks so much, I'm very grateful. I'm going to be making them for a bake sale tomorrow.

How lucky to find a copy of Forever Summer for 50p!! So many great recipes in it - the slow roast chicken with lemon and garlic, the braised little gems, the fish curry, the chicken and cashew curry, the pilaf. I could go on.... enjoy it!

Her Anglo Italian Trifle. It's addictive

Thinking of making this for xmas! 🎄

bananamonkey · 05/12/2025 19:27

I also love watching her old Christmas shows as a comforting tradition, they’re usually on some random Food channels in the run up.

Sorry not veggie but the Spanish chicken, chorizo and potato tray bake is a regular here.

Also the Gemelli with anchovies, tomatoes and mascarpone, so easy but tastes like something from a restaurant!

Love the Chocolate Guinness cake.

I make her simple macaroni cheese with evaporated milk on Christmas Eve for an easy make ahead dinner that the kids will eat.

My attempts at the Cappucino Pavlova and Clementine cake turned out abysmally (probably due to chef error) but maybe I need to try again.
