What are your favourite recipes from Nigella’s books, ideally either sweet or vegetarian.

I like her vegetable chilli and mattar paneer recipes, although I add lots more spices to the latter.

Her Chocolate Guinness cake is magnificent.

Old Fashioned Chocolate cake and Devil's Food Cake. Gingerbread stuffing. Sake Steak. All gorgeous!

The melt in the middle chocolate puddings receive rave reviews whenever I make them (edit: she calls them molten chocolate baby cakes). Her chocolate brownies have also received "best ever" brownies reviews from friends, though I do adapt them slightly. I also love the Guinness cake. Haven't made that one for ages.

The cheese fondue is delicious in Nigella Express.

Edited

Do you make them in a muffin tin or the little soufflé dishes (I’ve gone blank as to what you call them!!)

joanofaardvark · 23/11/2025 22:24

Oh and her rainbow slaw! brilliant with cold cuts.

redwinekeepsyousane · 23/11/2025 22:28

I didn’t think I liked coleslaw until I had her New Orleans Coleslaw (Express) and it’s now a staple in our house. Have also made the molten baby cakes with good results and have completely forgotten so will have to start making them again. I often make her pickled cucumbers although I’m not sure that’s what she calls them.

I bought some special pots for them to enable me to turn them out, I think they are non stick individual pudding basins or non stick dariole molds possibly?

Ginger Passionfruit Plate Trifle from Nigella Express is lovely and really easy to make - M&S sell passionfruit pulp so I don’t even have the faff of preparing that bit!

shivermetimbers77 · 23/11/2025 23:42

The Margarita ice cream and the cherry no bake cheesecake, both from Nigella Express, are fab

EleanorMc67 · 24/11/2025 00:33

I agree that the Clementine Cake is great. Her Mushroom Stroganoff is a good veggie main, especially served with a basmati & wild rice blend. I think it's from Feast.

EleanorMc67 · 24/11/2025 00:39

I would say though, that Nigella is great for cakes but her veggie recipes are a bit thin on the ground. There are many other cookery writers I'd choose ahead of her for good veggie recipes.

My partner & sister have both been veggie since childhood, my diet is about 70% veggie, & I have a few hundred cookery books ... so I've tried a fair few in my time!!

Who are your favorites for good veggie recipes? I love a recommendation. I have a curry book called Spicebox that I love.

Agree that she’s thin on the ground for veggie recipes, but she’s such a dream to read.

My favourite vegetarian cookery book is Madhur Jaffrey’s World Vegetarian.

My Nigella faves:

cappuccino pavlova - fab to do after you’re left with egg whites after making a carbonara.

No churn coffee ice cream

lamb and date tagine

one Pot chicken Orzo with lemon and tarragon (I add a chicken stock cube/pot to it)

sunken chocolate amaretto cake (fab if you are entertaining GF guest)

Netaporter · 24/11/2025 06:39

For fantastic veg/vegan recipes, my go-to is Rukmini Iyer - her roasting tin series are awesome. The green roasting tin is excellent.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 24/11/2025 06:45

My favourite from Nigella's website (not her recipe) is raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake. It is fabulous.

TappaMcFeety · 24/11/2025 06:49

I have to confess to making very few Nigella recipes over the years, even though I have most of her books (which I love to pore over) but one of her chocolate cake recipes is an absolute favourite and has been made many a time, but I especially love watching her cooking programmes and it’s a tradition to watch her old Christmas episodes on YouTube every December - still fascinates me watching her brine that turkey in the glow of the twinkly fairy lights! 😁

@redwinekeepsyousaneI’d recommend Clare Thomson for vegetarian recipes, she’s done a great fsmily veggie cookbook and lots of her other books are vegetable focussed.

nigella wise, Domestic Goddess was my first ever cookbook and it has all the war injuries to show it. The banana bread, dense chocolate cake, pizza rústica (really of a pie), brownies, iced biscuits are the most used pages from that. I love reading her writing.

AlphabetBird · 24/11/2025 06:52

Also a veggie here. We love the green roasting tin too, that’s been great.

Apart from cake, Nigella’s sweet potato macaroni cheese is fabulous. Massive mac and cheese game changer!

Letthemeatgateau · 24/11/2025 06:52

Nigella's courgette and feta fritters are my favourite thing to eat. If you haven't tried them, you need to OP.

I love courgette and feta fritters, but haven’t tried Nigella’s. I usually just wing it. Will rectify that.

I like the big onion scone thing from Goddess. It was my first grown up cookbook - my mum bought it for me as a Christmas present. It’s a thing of beauty.

I was going to suggest these.

The recipes are so easy and so imginative.

I love reading her, but don’t like watching her. Can’t cope with the innuendo and fake orgasms whenever she licks a spoon.

Do give them a go. Have you tried the chilli in Madhur Jeffrey's book? It's really good. Also recommend Anjum Anand's vegetarian book, that's the most used recipe book in our house.

Yes, MJ’s chilli is excellent. I love the Trinidadian chickpea curry in there too. Mostly I just read it and drool, rather than following recipes though.
