Saturday lunches?

For those with teenagers, what do you do for Saturday lunches? Personally I could just manage with a snack but teens seem to expect something much more substantial & I am loathe to do lots of cooking in the day!

Pizza
Hog dogs
Tomato soup with garlic bread or toasted cheese sandwich
Falafel or roast chicken wraps
Peato pasta
Scrambled eggs or beans on toast
Jacket potato with leftover curry or chilli

My dc were happy with sandwiches-

I would get them to make their own.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 21/11/2025 13:13

We do sandwiches, french toast or granola with fruit and yogurt as a sort of brunch. They help themselves to bread and snacks if that is not enough for them

KnickerlessParsons · 21/11/2025 13:14

Something on toast usually.

belleager · 21/11/2025 13:15

We just treated lunch like breakfast when I was a teen - open fridge or cupboard and make your own. Maybe offer anyone interested a portion of the same thing if you felt like it.

Nothing wrong with making them lunch generally if you want to, but why not make that your Sunday practice? Good training in self sufficiency and means you can relax.

Leakingconfidenceandrespect · 21/11/2025 13:22

They usually help themselves so a combination of soups, toasties, something on toast, pasta salad, cous cous, jacket potato with left overs, hot sandwiches eg fishfinger/ bacon /sausage.
Sometimes I have a specific leftover and one or more of them will eat that.
Ds usually works so takes a packed lunch.
Last weekend I filled the airfryer with mini sausage rolls, bhaji, spring rolls etc and they had them with green salad, coleslaw, veg sticks and dips which they really enjoyed.

Meadowfinch · 21/11/2025 13:29

I usually make a big batch of soup and some bread on Saturday morning. Or point ds at frozen Cornish pasty and beans, or there's usually a portion of chilli or casserole in the freezer he can combine with a jacket potato.

At 17 my ds doesn't really do small meals 😁

Stompythedinosaur · 21/11/2025 13:37

They make their own when they want it! Usually toastie, scrambled egg on toast, something like that.

Lifeisapeach · 21/11/2025 13:38

If we have no early clubs then we usually do a large brunch to keep everyone going to dinner time.

If they’ve been playing sport then they usually have a sandwich or sausage roll.

mumontherun14 · 21/11/2025 13:42

French toast, rolls bacon or sausage whoever they get up. My son plays football on a Saturday so he is always starving before & after x

littlefireseverywhere · 21/11/2025 13:44

For lunches I always get people to make their own. I buy bacon, eggs, cheeses, ham, salad, veg, tuna etc and they make their own stuff. Sometimes noodles, pizzas or toasties but they always make it.

HorrorFan81 · 21/11/2025 13:44

Mine aren't quite teens yet but pretty much always sandwiches or wraps. And as teenagers they should me more than capable of making their own

Rainbowpumpkin · 21/11/2025 13:48

We usually eat our main meal earlier in the day - so the teen doesnt get hangry. In the evening, he can snack or cook for himself. Best thing I ever did was make sure he was more than capable of cooking for himself (although the clearing up leaves a lot to be desired lol).

BauhausOfEliott · 21/11/2025 13:52

As a teenager, I just sorted my own lunches on Saturdays and during school holidays. Would have been sandwiches, a jacket potato, noodles, eggs/beans on toast, an omelette, something like that.

angelcake20 · 21/11/2025 13:57

Obviously they could do their own but we preferred to eat together until they were students and still often do when they’re home. We usually have beans/egg/cheese on toast or similar. Occasionally sandwiches.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 21/11/2025 13:57

give them access to the kitchen for Saturday lunch...

Mosaic80 · 21/11/2025 13:58

We do pasta, tuna melt bagel, noodles, avocado and poached egg on toast, pancakes, cold chicken fajita wraps. Something like that.

Favouritefruits · 21/11/2025 13:59

don’t teens just crack open a pot noodle for a Saturday lunch?

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 21/11/2025 14:03

They are teenagers. Point them in the general direction of the kitchen and let them get on with it. And while they are making their lunch, they can get you something as well.

DilkushaKitchen · 21/11/2025 14:04

I'm another one who just expected my teens to make their own Saturday lunch, there would always be bread, wraps, sandwich fillings, eggs, tuna, beans, pasta so they made whatever they had the appetite for. It's a nice easy meal to get some experience cooking/looking after yourself. Jacket potatoes might be a good option to start with?

patooties · 21/11/2025 14:04

Mine have ‘a hot sandwich’ (neither will eat soup sadly)
minute steaks, chicken flatties, sausages / bacon / rotisserie chicken on a lump of bread.
We also fry mushrooms, onions, peppers, an negg and whack a load of cheese on top.
There’s often not much time between them getting up and having breakfast and lunch on the weekend if I’m honest.

Lilacsilver · 21/11/2025 14:10

Once mine were teens they got their own lunch which usually involved enough pasta to feed an army.

TheGiantBear · 21/11/2025 14:25

Oh brilliant so many ideas thank you’

Cook extra throughout the week and freeze the leftovers, they can help themselves!

CremeEggThief · 21/11/2025 14:30

Provide plenty of stuff so they can fend for themselves!
