Saturday lunches?

For those with teenagers, what do you do for Saturday lunches? Personally I could just manage with a snack but teens seem to expect something much more substantial & I am loathe to do lots of cooking in the day!

We usually eat our main meal earlier in the day - so the teen doesnt get hangry. In the evening, he can snack or cook for himself. Best thing I ever did was make sure he was more than capable of cooking for himself (although the clearing up leaves a lot to be desired lol).

Same. Always have main meal at lunchtime. Then whoever does whatever later has eaten and day is free. Then evening is lighter food like sandwiches or part baked rolls which can be made when wanted individually at any time with fridge stuff. Always eat this way if at home together at lunchtime.

Not quite a teen but it’s usually a sandwich or roll with cooked meat or cheese for my dd, with a piece of fruit, crisps and a wee sweet treat. She’s not a very adventurous eater. She does like a salad. She is keen on a fry up at the weekend but prefers to eat that nearer 11 so it usually does as a lunch. Bacon, square sausage, french toast, scrambled eggs. Recently we’ve discovered potato scone French toast which is exactly as it sounds, potato scone coated in milk and beaten eggs and fried! Yummy.

Sandwiches/ Toasties/ Paninis. We would usually get the food shop in on a Friday so would have a good selection of fillings, part baked rolls, nice crisps.

We usually fend for ourselves at weekend lunches. Tuna wraps, sausage sandwich, soup, fish fingers, breaded chicken, leftovers, something on toast, omlettes, etc. There is aways coleslaw, salad stuff, nuts, crisps, yoghurt, cake bars, ice cream etc to fill up on.

Why have you raised them to be so helpless? Show them how to make food for themselves!

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 21/11/2025 15:16

When Dd was a teenager it was always help yourself at weekends/holidays, same when I was young.
There was always bread/eggs/bacon/soup/noodles etc.

IAmKerplunk · 21/11/2025 15:54

🤣 at the the thought of my teens (and pre teen) expecting me to make them something for lunch and then wanting to ensure it is substantial. They are more than bloody capable! Sometimes my dd will decide bacon and sausage baps are order of the day so she asks who else wants one and makes one for everyone but most of the time everyone sorts themselves. But we seldom sit down for lunch together in a Saturday because of dc socialising/shopping/sports etc so tend to eat at different times

I usually make a big batch of soup and some bread on Saturday morning. Or point ds at frozen Cornish pasty and beans, or there's usually a portion of chilli or casserole in the freezer he can combine with a jacket potato.

At 17 my ds doesn't really do small meals 😁

Yeah ive got one like that! He tends to sort himself out, scrambled egg on toast, pasta, soup, pizza depending on his mood. If hes super lazy, another 6 weetabix as a second breakfast 🤣

AtleastitsnotMonday · 21/11/2025 20:40

This is where you unleash the panini press! Panini’s, toasties, toasted wraps etc

BuildbyNumbere · 22/11/2025 07:00

Have they got 2 arms and the ability to walk to the kitchen? Let them sort themselves out 🙄

BuildbyNumbere · 22/11/2025 07:03

Another one that does everything for their kids so in future they expect it from their wife … give it 10 years she be on here moaning about it!

Caspianberg · 22/11/2025 07:04

Not teens but weekends I tend to do bigger breakfast than weekdays. Boiled eggs/ toast, buttermilk pancakes, waffles with Greek yogurt and hot berries. So lunch of toastie and soup is usually good

Encourage them to learn how to make scones. Pretty quick, and then they can snack on with mascarpone and jam ( or make cheese ones)

DottyLottieLou · 22/11/2025 09:52

Whatever they want to make themselves.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 22/11/2025 15:26

Mine get their own lunch. Often eggs or pasta, or
something with toast

Arthur2shedsJackson · 22/11/2025 17:05

When we had 3 teens at home we created an omelette station for Saturday lunch. Put together individual bowls of ingredients to choose from: so, grated cheese, ham, mushrooms, onion, cold potato, olives, sweetcorn, diced tomatoes and anything else to hand. The kids would put in their orders and their Dad and I would do the assembly/cooking. Served with French bread, it was a popular idea.
