I must have rubbish taste buds because I switched to decaf tea a few months ago, assuming it would taste nasty, but I can't tell the difference. It is way better than the last time I tried it (a few decades ago!) I've used Ringtons, Yorkshire and one other (perhaps Twinings?) and they've all been fine.

I was just coming on to say the same. It must have been 20 years ago that I last drank decaf tea and it was so bad! I picked up a box of decaf PG tips the other week and what a pleasant surprise! You do have to leave the bag in for a while but I struggle to taste the difference to caffeinated.

Glad I'm not the only one! I was beginning to feel like an absolute tea philistine!

I guess there are so many variables - water quality, brewing habits, taste buds, etc. That must be why we have the expression "Not my cup of tea" to indicate a preference that is beyond explanation/analysis.Grin

I like twinings. Very hard water area here but with a water softener fitted - would definitely recommend.

Kellogs4 · 29/10/2025 07:41

I've had Yorkshire tea and PG decaff they taste the same as normal to me.

Why not try loose tea and blend with a bit of full caf to make a kind of half caf with a bit more oomph? Defeating the object a little maybe but just over decaf and a little under full caf can't be too bad?

macaroni234 · 29/10/2025 07:42

I’ll try and remember to look when I get up but whatever decaf tea we have is very strong I have to race to get the bag out and save it to use again for another cup of tea. It’s probably either Tescos own or Yorkshire.
Lors decaf instant coffee tastes the same as the regular version. DH said he thought he’d given me decaf by mistake the other day when I needed my caffeine hit to wake me up! I thought as much when he mentioned it but hadn’t noticed the taste

I've tried the Tick Tock decaf recently and it's very good. Sainsbury's own is passable as a cheaper option. I'm in a hard water area, and like strong tea so maybe leave it longer to brew than most!

Defender90 · 29/10/2025 08:02

Another vote for Sainsbury own brand, it’s the best one I’ve found.

CiderGlider · 29/10/2025 08:05

I’m a decaf Yorkshire Tea drinker and like a strong cup so I have to double bag to get a decent cup!

notnorman · 29/10/2025 08:06

I just leave the tea bag in when I drink it- like you might with a herbal tea!

Tinseltrauma · 29/10/2025 08:09

M and S now do a Half Caff if that's any help? Otherwise Twinings or Tea Pig are the best decafs I've found.

AuntyBulgaria · 29/10/2025 08:09

I've tried Yorkshire tea decaf and it got strong quickly for me but it tasted bitter. I am currently using whittards decaf earl grey and they are really good.

Sainsbury's own brand decaf is surprisingly good! Recently switched to it from clipper decaf as clipper was getting so expensive. I've been drinking decaf for about 4 years now though between pregnancies and breastfeeding so this recommendation comes with the disclaimer that my taste buds might have changed!

I came here to say I don’t notice the difference between normal and decaf really, but my decaf is Sainsbury’s own brand, so maybe it’s a good one! (Warning though I don’t really notice the difference between brands, much to my husband’s disgust).

M&S de-caff for me after a recommendation on here! They also do a half-caff option which I bought but haven’t tried yet.

My favourite caff tea bags are M&S Gold - not sure why I haven't thought to try the decaf - will give these a go. 👍

It's so interesting how tastes vary. I would struggle to drink a Tetley's decaf - I think it's absolutely disgusting.

Dorset tea bags

Nofksleft2give · 29/10/2025 08:26

No one has mentioned Rooibos. I find it very refreshing. Strictly speaking it’s not tea, so not trying to be IYKWIM. I like it without milk in the evening.

Molecule · 29/10/2025 08:27

Another vote for Sainsbury’s here. Tried many of the other own label ones and Sainsbury’s are definitely the best.

Any views on Twinings English breakfast decaf? I’m trying to during less late at night because currently having a bad sleep phase but miss the sat cozy and warm cradling a cuppa aspect

MaleficentQueen · 29/10/2025 08:36

Yorkshire Tea decaf is the best. I switched to it whilst pregnant, and never looked back. I’m now one year pp, and I have no interest in going back to the normal Yorkshire Tea! 👍🏻

Neveranynamesleft · 29/10/2025 08:45

Lidl decaff is my usual brew, just leave the bag in a little longer than usual. Tetley decaff is also fine, cheaper in B+M when they have it.

Somersetbaker · 29/10/2025 08:48

Tesco decaff teabags are my choice, or tetley when I want caffeine. Decaff instant coffee is pants whatever the brand, unless you like hot brown water.

fivetriangulartrees · 29/10/2025 08:51

Sainsbury's own brand decaf is good, honest. I get all my shopping from Asda but just go to Sainsbury's for the tea (and cat litter).

Busfriend · 29/10/2025 08:52

Ringtons decaf is the best I’ve tasted and tastes like normal tea

I use it for nighttime brews. But our soft water is odd, I had to switch to Twinings normal breakfast tea when we moved here, after a lifetime of Tetley. The decaf version is OK, but only just OK, not found anything better though.
