Nothing: we were skint and ate anything we could get. It was the 70s.

SparrowFeet · 25/10/2025 19:58

Nothing at all. Although we did only have sweets one day a week. It wasn't that we weren't allowed them on other days just my parents didn't buy them. In fact that was the case for most things - we didnt have fizzy drinks most of the time apart from perhaps parties or Christmas - not banned but just wouldn't have thought about it.
I never thought that anything was out of bounds. I'm sure things were banned because we didn't have them but I certainly never felt anything was forbidden and I'm grateful they took that approach.

Ddakji · 25/10/2025 19:58

Nothing was banned. We only had cans of pop a couple of times a week but nothing was actually banned.

sodabreadjam · 25/10/2025 20:02

Nothing was banned.

I was brought up in the 60s. Meals were mostly home cooked and we had a lot of fruit and veg, but I was also allowed chocolate, sweets, baked goods, crisps and fizzy drinks.

I have a good relationship with food - neither overweight nor underweight and I have a good diet but I still enjoy the odd bit of chocolate and cake. I gave up fizzy drinks decades ago.

OSTMusTisNT · 25/10/2025 20:04

Cheese, my Mum hates all cheese and my Dad never got beyond mild cheddar, never melted though as he hated melted cheese.

I had to wait until adulthood to indulge in the delights of Brie, Stilton etc. I absolutely love cheese and could live on the stuff.

And,fresh orange, far to indulgent except for thimble sized portions at Xmas when relatives were staying. I still feel like a lottery winner when I drink it by the pint (occasionally) 😋!

Oh, non food related but hair conditioner, my Mum always had short hair even as a kid so had no idea about it.

HoobleDooble · 25/10/2025 20:07

Bubble Gum, I was never allowed a screwball from the Ice Cream Van, had to have a cider lolly or bog standard cone.

Mummyslittlegiraffe · 25/10/2025 20:08

Child of the ‘80’s Fizzy drinks were at my Grandparents only. Sugary cereals were camping holiday treats only too.
Orange juice was watered down, but that was about the cost and making it last longer.
I didn’t have rice, pasta, pizza, curry, chinese etc until I left home for uni, as my Dad doesn’t like any of them. He won’t eat fish either, so we never had a take away of any sorts.
Oh and Mr Whippy because of salmonella, thanks Edwina. I still say “don’t tell my Mum” if i have one!!

I have the sugary cereals during school holidays only rule too tbh.

CrystalSingerFan · 25/10/2025 20:12

Veal. (My late mother disapproved of the conditions. Allegedly things have improved...)

Thingsthatgo · 25/10/2025 20:15

Blue sweets (and Beef for a few years).

Wigeon · 25/10/2025 20:51

Nutella - massively jealous when we stayed with one of my parents' friends and they just casually had Nutella in the cupboard as if it was just another jam or honey (which we were allowed)!

White pasta. White rice. Always had wholemeal. Wholemeal spaghetti was yuk.

Easter eggs. We got given Easter pyjamas instead.

Never ever had standard fizzy drinks at home - apart from posh ones like Shloer on special occasions. To be fair I almost never buy fizzy drinks even now (apart from birthday parties now my DC are older).

Can only remember having Mars bar once or twice and my mum also sliced it up! Surprised to find that was A Thing!

cannyvalley · 25/10/2025 20:56

Oh also… anything with red food colouring. And those flat boiled sweets… my mam called them ‘slippy sweets’ and was convinced we would choke. I remember her biting any boiled sweets in half before she gave us a half to avoid us choking. The luxury of a whole boiled sweet when I was an older teen was real!!!

Twatterati · 25/10/2025 20:56

Chips and other fried stuff (70/80s). Only ever had chips occasionally on a Friday if we had fish and chips.

Fairydustand · 25/10/2025 21:04

Yes,we weren't banned from anything either. It was was just that breakfast, lunch, dinner, was repetitive, with very basic foods.Cheap biscuits and plain ice cream as occasional treats. We were not well off but never went hungry. Most dinners my mum cooked from scratch, with cheap meats . Probably why I rarely eat meat now.Not a bad thing there I guess.

Sugary cereal like frosties

But they’re grrrrrrreat!

BackToRealitySigh · 25/10/2025 21:11

Granny Smith apples - apparently they were all from South Africa & because of Apartheid they wouldn't buy them.
Also we used to be given carrots instead of bananas coz bananas we're too expensive.

Freebus · 25/10/2025 21:13

We weren't allowed chocolate bars like Mars bars or packets of sweets or individual sized packets of crisps. Crisps would be a family bag of chipsticks that would be had between a few people with a salad tea.
Was envious of the other kids at school who had a packet of crisps at break. 😒

Also not allowed fizzy drinks - eg coke, until we got a soda stream and then we could make our own unlimited supply of coke, limeade, etc.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 25/10/2025 21:14

Chewing gum.

mamagogo1 · 25/10/2025 21:15

Nothing banned but we are a basic diet of meat and potatoes like most people, no spare money for the pop man etc. even yogurt was a treat

Howyoualldoworkme · 25/10/2025 21:16

Jam sandwiches. Common 😁

mamagogo1 · 25/10/2025 21:16

70’s i should add

SmellsLikeTeenArmpit · 25/10/2025 21:18

Anything made by Nestle
Anything from South Africa
Anything made by Coca Cola
Anything from Israel
Sugary cereal, or sugar on cereal. Plain muesli, weetabix, or cornflakes only.

This was in the 80s/90s.

MrsPositivity1 · 25/10/2025 21:26

Chewing gum / bubbleys

Bananafofana · 25/10/2025 21:29

Not so much banned as just not purchased: squash, juice, fizzy drink, processed meats,
sausages, bacon, any cereal other than porridge or weetabix, any yoghurt other than home made plain yoghurt. We DID have biscuits though.

Strewth1 · 25/10/2025 21:30

Sugar. My father was a dentist so he was keen to limit our sugar intake. No sugar on cereals or in tea/coffee. Easy habit to form early on life. I can’t think of anything more sickly than sugary cereals or sugar in hot drinks.

Bananafofana · 25/10/2025 21:30

Oh and no crisps. At all. Once a year for a birthday party maybe.
