Expired yesterday, dh was meant to stick in the slow cooker last night but forgot. 🙄
It smells fine and isnt brown, is it okay to put in the slow cooker this morning & eat tonight?

Good grief yes.

Anonomoso · 23/10/2025 08:18

Absolutely, if it looks and smells OK then yes I would, and do.

Doggymummar · 23/10/2025 08:19

Of course. If it still smelled of fresh blood

hellowhaaat3632 · 23/10/2025 08:20

Chicken no, beef yes

saveforthat · 23/10/2025 08:20

Was it stored in the fridge? Then of course. Do you think it went "off" at midnight?

Leavesfalling · 23/10/2025 08:21

Yes of course. Beef is not a meat I worry about compared to other types.

I just boiled up a load of beef that I found at the back of the freezer from 5 years ago. Perfectly fine (although I did slightly pause, but pretended I was a Viking using a carcass I had buried in the snow for the winter). I'm not advising others to do this btw, before I get told off by the freezer police but the beef was (almost) straight from the field.

Sorry I just get paranoid ds is diabetic and sickness can end him up in hospital. 😅
was stored in the fridge and Its going in the slow cooker now!

Will be lovely.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 23/10/2025 08:26

Pass it over, I'll eat it😋

Pharazon · 23/10/2025 08:34

Of course. Decent beef will have already been hung for 2 or preferably 3 weeks so another day isn’t going to make a difference.

sesquipedalian · 23/10/2025 08:54

OP, as I tell my children, it doesn’t turn to ashes at midnight on its sell-by date! Your best indicator for meat is always your nose - if it smells and looks OK, then crack on. And beef one day over should be fine in any case, If it were chicken or fish, then exercise caution (even before sell-by date sometimes) but beef will be fine.

PembeGreyfurt · 23/10/2025 08:55

Absolutely fine 😊

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/10/2025 08:57

If it looks and smells fine, it is fine.

I'd be more careful with chicken, but beef is pretty safe.

hellowhaaat3632 · 23/10/2025 08:20

Chicken no, beef yes

Again, use your senses. If it smells fine, then it is just wasteful to throw it away. Off chicken looks slimy, and smells bad!

AOIFEmissingUalways · 23/10/2025 09:00

The beef joint doesn't know it was supposed to "go off" 8 hours ago - just stick it in the slow cooker now!

And what do you think would have happened to the chicken in the 8 hours since the factory decided its UB date?

It's all about the storage, keeping any meat out of the fridge in a warm kitchen for days on end means it's more likely to be off even before the midnight expiry.

Edited

I said I'd be more careful with chicken, not that I'd throw it out.

Wasssuuuuup · 23/10/2025 09:04

Industry has long argued that dates on red meat are way too short for no good reason and encourage waste. I rememebr articles goimg years back about this.
Even chicken is fine next day as pps said. If it isn't, it most likely wasn't fine even before the date passed!

indoorplantqueen · 23/10/2025 09:06

Yes

samones · 23/10/2025 09:25

I wouldn’t but I’m a stickler for dates, I’m autistic and have OCD so absolutely have to stick to them.

Irenesortof · 23/10/2025 09:38

Yes if it smells ok

BauhausOfEliott · 23/10/2025 09:52

Of course! The best beef is hung for weeks before it’s sold, and another 24 hours isn’t going to make a difference.

Yes this - I've had chicken frozen on or before the sell-by date that didn't smell right coming out of the freezer a couple of weeks later.

You can also get meat thermometers (I cook a lot of chicken and use ours loads) with temperatures for poultry, and for well done/medium/ medium rare beef or lamb. These are quite reassuring as if I'm doing say 4 turkey burgers I can test each of them so I know it's not just one that's done properly.

Don't apologise OP...having worked on a diabetes ward I can understand your worries! But it should be fine x
