Please make fresh coriander optional, possibly use parsley as an alternative.

I am one of the people who finds food with fresh coriander tastes as though it has got soap grated into it. I am not alone.
"The prevalence of dislike ranged from 3 to 21%. The proportion of subjects classified as disliking cilantro was 21% for East Asians, 17% for Caucasians, 14% for those of African descent, 7% for South Asians, 4% for Hispanics, and 3% for Middle Eastern subjects."
This is a 2012 study amongst 1500 people.
It's a genetic thing, not just a fancy.
Ground coriander seed is OK, for me at least.
Would be lovely if it were optional - on the side maybe?
Anyone feel the same?

Nope sorry.

CryOverSpilledIrnBru · 22/10/2025 20:12

I have (embarrassingly recently) realised that many people in my life can't bear the taste of it, and have adapted as you suggest.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 22/10/2025 20:13

I think it’s integral to some dishes.

I wouldn’t be against it being labelled as an ingredient when eating out, like allergens can be.

I love coriander though and would be very sad to have parsley in its place. If eating out, ask if it’s in the dish, if it’s just a garnish if it can be omitted, but if it’s in a base sauce it’s up to you to choose something else.

rhubarbandapple · 22/10/2025 20:13

I don't get that soapy taste, but would happily skip all such garnishes, especially when I know they've just been pulled out of a sweaty plastic bag from a supermarket. They do the complete opposite of making a plate look more appealing to me.

Smartiepants79 · 22/10/2025 20:15

I loath it. Ruins everything it’s in. There’s no point it being integral if it’s disgusting.

CriticalOverthinking · 22/10/2025 20:20

It’s delicious, I keep a corriander plant in the kitchen and nibble at will. I’m the only one in the house that likes it though.

It’s not really an issue though. Cooking and it’s part of a recipe? Swap or leave out. Eating out? Just say ‘no coriander’ or ‘no garnish’.

mathanxiety · 22/10/2025 20:25

I love it. I appreciate there are some who don't though.

The answer isn't parsley all the same. The flavours are not similar at all.

Just choose menu items that have no cilantro if you're eating out, and don't add any to your dishes at home obv.

mellicauli · 22/10/2025 20:28

What's the fuss? Your statistics show that the vast majority of people don't dislike it.

Octoberthewhatnow · 22/10/2025 20:30

I love corriander. And I LOATHE truffle. The former is easily avoided, the later seems to have found itself onto every menu, everywhere. Why, in the name of god, do chips or mashed potatoes need truffle oil???? They do not.

LividArse · 22/10/2025 20:31

Genuine question. Does it NOT taste like soap to some people? Or do they know it tastes like soap but still like it? 🤔

Defoncforthis · 22/10/2025 20:33

I absolutely love fresh coriander!

I’d like to know this too.

Defoncforthis · 22/10/2025 20:33

It doesn't taste of soap

angelcake20 · 22/10/2025 20:34

I absolutely adore coriander and detest parsley, so definitely no replacing!

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 22/10/2025 20:36

No, it doesn’t taste like soap.

I think there is some chemical interaction that some people have that make it taste like soap, but the people who like it, don’t pick up the same flavour profile.

A bit like some people have a scent that mosquitos will be attracted to and get bitten rotten, while others in the same group won’t have one bite.

Or how some people saw a black and blue dress, and others saw white and gold.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/10/2025 20:37

What would be good is menus listing the things in the dish, so you could avoid something that hinges on an ingredient you dislike or react badly to.
There's far too much raw red onion in things.

It tastes somewhat soapy to me but it also tastes fresh and green so I enjoy it.

DingDongJingle · 22/10/2025 20:38

I like coriander but can’t stand parsley. Horrible stuff. You can’t always cater to other people’s tastes.

DingDongJingle · 22/10/2025 20:38

Sasssquatch · 22/10/2025 20:33

It doesn’t taste like soap to me. Not that I’ve ever tasted soap 😁

Musicmummy63 · 22/10/2025 20:39

I loathe it too, tastes of strong soap and would ruin any dish for me. My son absolutely loves it though.

It doesn’t taste like soap to everyone. It’s a genetic trait where some people are more sensitive to aldehyde chemicals in it.
its a fairly small amount of people that have this- highest estimates are up to about 20%. So for most people, it’s not a soapy taste. I would describe it as a rich, aromatic, lightly spicy and earthy taste.

BertieBotts · 22/10/2025 20:39

It is completely nothing like the dress - that was a very odd perception thing which drove me absolutely crazy - I remember going to my computer and seeing the exact same post by the same friend on FB with the same version of the picture on the same monitor two times on that day and each time I saw a different colour and couldn't see the original version any more.

The taste perception and mosquito comparisons are fine, you can keep those Grin

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 22/10/2025 20:41

No, I love it, sorry. I use it copiously in curries and salads.

I can’t bear dill though… so I don’t buy or eat anything with dill in it. I don’t expect people to not use dill.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 22/10/2025 20:41

@LividArse it doesn’t taste soapy at all to me -I absolutely adore the stuff, I often have a little plant on the go and chuck it on many a dinner. I do know people who do find it soapy though, and one who is violently sick if she inadvertently eats it. I can’t actually describe what it tastes like to me, but it has a weird catnip effect on me.

BertieBotts · 22/10/2025 20:41

I am unsure whether I have the coriander gene because I strongly dislike it, but soap is not how I would describe the taste. It tastes weird and not like something that should be edible but it doesn't taste like soap. It tastes like the smell of grass or leaves or weeds.
