I am one of the people who finds food with fresh coriander tastes as though it has got soap grated into it. I am not alone.
"The prevalence of dislike ranged from 3 to 21%. The proportion of subjects classified as disliking cilantro was 21% for East Asians, 17% for Caucasians, 14% for those of African descent, 7% for South Asians, 4% for Hispanics, and 3% for Middle Eastern subjects."
This is a 2012 study amongst 1500 people.
It's a genetic thing, not just a fancy.
Ground coriander seed is OK, for me at least.
Would be lovely if it were optional - on the side maybe?
Anyone feel the same?

The coriander leaf is a flavouring and so you cannot make it optional

If you don’t like the taste then eat something without coriander in it

And no parsley is not a substitute for coriander.

whereisit1 · 22/10/2025 21:43

Vile vile vile. Parsley isn't much better tbh. Don't mind any other herbs. Someone mentioned roast lamb, I think it smells like live sheep which is a bit off-putting

Dearg · 22/10/2025 21:44

I detest parsley ( & tarragon) : my DH hates fresh coriander .
I try to work around it with basil, but as I am the cook here, sometimes the coriander sneaks in.

whereisit1 · 22/10/2025 21:52

Now tarragon I can get on with. Creamy chicken tarragon..mmm

DeanStockwelll · 22/10/2025 21:55

I love it , I use it in curries, sandwichs ( esp tomato and strong cheeses) and salad
Another MNer sent me a recipe for coriander chutney a few days ago which I am definitely going to try at weekend

@DrCoconut I always think roasting lamb smells like wet dogs

Genuine question. Does it NOT taste like soap to some people? Or do they know it tastes like soap but still like it? 🤔

It doesn't taste like soap at all to me
I absolutely love it - especially in fish curry or dhall.

Rose water tastes like soap, as does grenadine, but I do quite like them. Also some of those flavoured green teas, fruit teas in general, which I don't like. Anything with peach flavouring is like shower gel.

soupyspoon · 22/10/2025 21:59

Love the stuff but not parsley and you cant swap parsley for it as it changes the dish.

soupyspoon · 22/10/2025 22:01

Whereas beetroot and trout taste like mud
Saffron tastes like tcp/bleachy
Turmeric tastes medicinal and not in a good way

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/10/2025 22:01

In what way is it ever not optional? Just order something different - surely you’re not eating at places where every single menu item has it included?

Livpool · 22/10/2025 22:06

It doesn’t taste of soap to me - but I hate tarragon and anything that tastes even vaguely of aniseed 🤢

KitchenSinkLlama · 22/10/2025 22:08

Parsley in no way can replace Corriander. The flavours have no similarity at all. Corriander is fabulous.

Quite often it isn't mentioned. It's a fairly recent fashion, maybe 5 years back coriander wasn't used so often. Like goat's cheese. A few years ago it was unheard of.

Nb. I only suggested parsley as a substitute because I find it OK. Maybe cress, grass... whatever. I think the greenery sprinkle is usually just to make the dish look posh 😁

It tastes like soap for me too...ranging from unpleasant to it feels like someone just put fairy liquid all over my dinner.

Horrible stuff.

utamea · 22/10/2025 22:19

I absolutely love coriander

It’s not for looks. It really enhances flavour for me.

I’d love to try the coriander chutney, I had some on a buffet once and it was amazing.

M&S salads would prove that isn’t always possible (obviously no one has to eat a M&S salad but sometimes you find yourself at a station at lunchtime)

lucya66 · 22/10/2025 22:24

I love coriander too. And I hate truffles.

i order from Pho and they send a separate bag of coriander.

Foxyloxy89 · 22/10/2025 22:25

Yes I hate it. Don't hate it as much as I hate fennel though!

Shutuptrevor · 22/10/2025 22:30

I hated it until I was pregnant and now still absolutely love it 15 years later! And no, it doesn’t taste like soap to me.

But surely this thread could have been started about any herb/spice/flavouring? I don’t like tarragon but I don’t wander around demanding everyone else stops using it?!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/10/2025 22:33

Sasssquatch · 22/10/2025 22:24

Surely not every single salad has coriander in though and even if it does surely other food options are available in M&S. I don’t like mayonnaise but I don’t expect them not to put it in pre-packed sandwiches or for every sandwich with mayo to have an alternative option, I just choose something different. If you don’t like coriander just choose an option without it in the same way you would any other food, it doesn’t need a mandated alternative.

JDM625 · 22/10/2025 22:35

Surely the answer OP, is to ask if the dish contains coriander before ordering?

Depending on the study, less than 15% of the population have this genetic variant/defect. Why should 85% of the population go without because of your genetic variant? And yes, parsley is green, but hardly a substitute for fresh coriander!

RaininSummer · 22/10/2025 22:35

Love coriander and parsley doesn't work as a replacement at all unless as a garnish and you aren't actually eating it,

Doesnt taste like soap to me but I have been eating it since birth.

CoastalCalm · 22/10/2025 22:42

I loathe parsley
