Anyone got a mokka pot (is that what they're called?)

soupyspoon · 01/10/2025 15:11

I have recently been introduced to noisette coffee in France which was gorgeous

Better than cortado and macchiato.

I dont drink a lot of coffee. I cant drink buckets of drink in any case and would probably only have a small coffee once or twice a week

But Ive been looking at these little espresso pots that you put on the hob, is this going to be another gadget cluttering up my cupboards when Im trying to shed items?
Are they too small to put on the hob?

OH likes instant coffee or sometimes does a weak cafetiere coffee at the weekend. Abroad when we get to our self catering accommodation he is straight out to the carre four to buy over priced Nescafe (because no one decent drinks that shit abroad)

Ive seen this

I've had one in the past and often find them in holiday accommodation. I much prefer an aeropress for something small and simple to make 'real' coffee with. The clean up is 100 times easier than with a mokka pot or a cafitiere.

Abra1t · 01/10/2025 17:51

They come in all sizes and we have the standard-sized one. It makes great coffee and is indestructible.

mamagogo1 · 01/10/2025 17:55

Cafetière is so much simpler as you just boil the kettle

soupyspoon · 01/10/2025 17:55

I dont know why my link isnt linking

Im looking at these aeropresses now, but dont like the idea I need to buy papers with them, but am tempted by easier cleaning

Depends what sort of hob you've got, we've got induction and hotplate but I can imagine it would be tricky to balance a small one on a gas ring. I prefer it to our Aeropress which is mainly for taking in holiday but it is a bit more fiddly.

SheherazadesSpringNonsense · 01/10/2025 17:56

They are great - just if you have a gas hob then the smallest pots can sometimes be a bit wobbly, or if you have an induction hob you need to make sure it is compatible. I don’t use mine much because DH bought a fancy machine that only needs a button pressed, but actually I like the coffee it makes best of all

YouveGotNoBloodyIdea · 01/10/2025 17:56

i use one all the time - love my espresso - on my gas hob I just bought one of those adapters - a cast iron ring that goes on the hob - Amazon have loads of them for about £10.

soupyspoon · 01/10/2025 17:57

I have a cast iron ring actually, i use it for the porridge otherwise it cooks too quick, I could stand it on there

I have one and like the coffee it makes but rarely use it as it’s a bit of a faff plus I’m a bit scared of it.

BigSkies2022 · 01/10/2025 18:00

I used a mokka/Bialetti for years and loved them. Had different sizes depending on how many people I was making coffee for. Then DH bought one of those fuck-off huge bean-to-cup Jura machines, like we’re some City law firm. I’m afraid I have been converted but the mokka remains my first love! They don’t always work on induction hobs though- not heavy enough.

PurBal · 01/10/2025 18:00

We use one everyday. Easy to clean.

I use one paper filter per bag of coffee and also have reusable metal mesh filter for taking camping

blackteaplease · 01/10/2025 19:37

We've had mokka pots for years, a small one which fits fine on our gas hob and makes coffee for one person and the slightly larger one that makes coffee for 2 people. It's not that faff once you know what you are doing and the taste is way better than a cafetiere

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/10/2025 19:40

I’ve got one that works on my induction hob & I love it. Just big enough for 2 small cups or 1 big one.

Toomanywaterbottles · 01/10/2025 19:43

Love mine. It’s used every day.

LemondrizzleShark · 01/10/2025 19:49

Mokka pots make much better coffee than cafetières and Nespresso machines. Far closer to a proper espresso.

I use this to balance mine on the gas hob, works perfectly:

I think I read that if you have an induction hob you might need a diffuser plate, as most Mokka pots are made of aluminium. Happy to be corrected though!

NotMeNoNo · 01/10/2025 20:08

Aeropress is the business. Papers come in packs of 350 so you only have to buy them occasionally. A quick rinse and it's ready for next time. Out cafetiere is gathering dust since we've had one.

The only thing is, like a moka pot, it's best with finely ground coffee, I use any of the vacuum packed Illy or Lavazza from supermarkets. Tk Maxx often have good fine ground coffee in tins as well. Or get a good coffee shop like 200 degrees to grind it for Aeropress.

Ours seems to work on our induction hob.

I'm in Italy where they are as common in every household as kettles are in UK! I have several Moka pots including the one on your link. I love them and wouldn't use anything else. Mine goes on my gas cooker. You need to use it a few times before the coffee starts to be come really good and you never ever wash it in anything except water.

SparrowFeet · 01/10/2025 20:54

There was a thread the other day with someone asking about Bialetti (same thing) so I am at risk of repeating myself but I love mine. They are worth it and do an excellent cup of coffee - it's an espresso you're getting.
Mine doesn't work on the induction hub without using a special plate thing we had to buy (got it from JL).
They're better than aeropress and filter coffees in my opinion and no more complicated. I wouldn't even bother with an expensive espresso machine. There's just no point.
I take mine on holiday with me!

Funnywonder · 01/10/2025 21:02

I have a six cup and a two cup Bialetti. I use the little pot every day for my one cup of coffee (I’m more of a tea drinker) and I use the big one if my eldest fancies a coffee at the same time as me. I love it. But the only problem is that I forget to rinse it out. It’s too hot to rinse right away and then it just lies there. Other people are probably better organised than me!

worrisomeasset · 01/10/2025 21:03

We had a Nespresso machine at home but used to use a Bialetti moka pot when going away in the campervan. For a while, DH enjoyed piddling about with it but as soon as we realised that the Nespresso worked perfectly well on campsite electric hook ups, the moka pot was abandoned in favour of the Nespresso. The Moka pot is now gathering dust in a cupboard.

BaronessBomburst · 01/10/2025 21:10

DH uses one most days. He buys espresso coffee to use in it. It makes lovely coffee and is easy to clean. We have a gas hob and use a gas star so it doesn't wobble.
Go for it!

MargotMoon · 01/10/2025 21:10

Yep. Use my little Bialetti every day. It sits on the smallest hob ring just fine.

Do NOT whatever you do wash it in soapy water! Just rinse and wipe down with plain hot water. I learnt the hard way and had to get a new one
