Anyone got a mokka pot (is that what they're called?)

soupyspoon · 01/10/2025 15:11

I have recently been introduced to noisette coffee in France which was gorgeous

Better than cortado and macchiato.

I dont drink a lot of coffee. I cant drink buckets of drink in any case and would probably only have a small coffee once or twice a week

But Ive been looking at these little espresso pots that you put on the hob, is this going to be another gadget cluttering up my cupboards when Im trying to shed items?
Are they too small to put on the hob?

OH likes instant coffee or sometimes does a weak cafetiere coffee at the weekend. Abroad when we get to our self catering accommodation he is straight out to the carre four to buy over priced Nescafe (because no one decent drinks that shit abroad)

Ive seen this

I used a mokka/Bialetti for years and loved them. Had different sizes depending on how many people I was making coffee for. Then DH bought one of those fuck-off huge bean-to-cup Jura machines, like we’re some City law firm. I’m afraid I have been converted but the mokka remains my first love! They don’t always work on induction hobs though- not heavy enough.

😂 which one of the Defoes are you? Or is it more Ally McBeal?

AnOldCynic · 11/10/2025 08:59

I have an older version of that pot. Are you sure you can’t get the filter out with your nail? I tap the grinds into the good recycling and scrape the rest out with my finger, don’t rinse down the sink. And I only ever do this when it’s cold. I usually leave it until I next make a coffee the day after 😳

BobbieTables · 11/10/2025 09:03

I love mine, it's used every day, makes 6 espresso shots in a go which is slightly more than we need (4 coffee drinkers) so I often use the last bit first thing the next morning.
When we had a gas hob it did need a ring reducer thing to keep it stable.

I’ve been reading the thread so apologies if you said this earlier, but I’m not clear why you can’t wait for it to cool down before you open it?

Well if Im making another batch I need to use it, but even if Im not, Im keen to clean it up straight away. Dont like the thought of it sitting there. I like to do things asap.

I keep coffee in the fridge, in a tub with a lid.

pumpkinscake · 11/10/2025 09:07

I have two, different sizes, and have used every day for years. I take them on holiday if I'm driving. Love them.

Which version, theres lots of them, its the express exclusive in red. Not sure if the internals differ

No definitely cant get it out with a nail, it jiggles but you cant get purchase. I did succeed in getting coffee grinds under my nail this morning though trying again.

Anyway I have my two bowl system now.

Is it aluminium? I don’t put mine in because I’m worried it will make it go rough and cloudy, not shiny!

I was told you shouldn’t put anything aluminium in dishwashers as the particles get spread around the machine and everything in it, and then you ingest it and die of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

I just rinse mine in plain water if I can be arsed.

I have an espresso machine these days but why, why, did it never occur to me to take one of my trusty little moka pots on holiday with me (when we stayed in an Airbnb)?

But you are making a lot of unnecessary work and mess?

In what way? It has to be cleaned, it makes no odds if its hot or cold as to how much mess is caused.

Although Im quite relieved to hear that a lot of people are lot more relaxed about this, the youtube videos present it as if the thing needs to be treated like a newborn baby

It is a bit fiddly but literally millions of Italian people used them everyday for generations (though I’m sure they use bean to cup / nesspresso machines etc now). I have lots of family in Italy though and I’ve never seen this two bowl method.

As another poster said it is (was) commom in Italy to have a variety of moka pots (and it is moka) in different sizes. This is because it’s not really designed to make multiple different batches one after the other.

But if you need to clean it before it cools just run it under the cold tap. Don’t wash it, just rinse it.

it does take a little bit of getting used to.

If you let it cool, you don't need two bowls of water. And the grounds just come out with a quick tap on the side of the bin if they are cool, mine go into my compost. So much less fuss than if hot?

soupyspoon · 01/10/2025 17:55

I dont know why my link isnt linking

Im looking at these aeropresses now, but dont like the idea I need to buy papers with them, but am tempted by easier cleaning

Cleaning is incredibly easy with a moka- you just wait til it cools down, unscrew and tap a firm puck of grounds out into the compost caddy or bin. I used to hate cleaning cafetieres because the wet grounds used to go everywhere.

Millions of Italians can't be wrong!

I havent got two bowls of water. I have a bowl of water to put the thing in, just a little bit up the side, not too far and that cools it down

After a few mins I then have a smaller bowl so I can tip the bottom bit upside down to get the funnel out. The grinds do not come out with a quick tap. The more coarse grind we are using today is a bit easier but isnt coming out in a puck. The fine grind we used the other day from the Lidl Greek coffee was stuck like mud, there was no getting out.

I don't think Greek coffee is designed to go in a moka! (It's designed to go in those tiny long handled saucepans that they use in Greece and Turkey, that continue to remain a mystery to me even though I've spent a lot of time in Greece). I use "normal" ground coffee from Lidl, and TBH I always empty my moka out the day after, when I'm about to make that day's coffee, and it comes out fine every time.

pumpkinscake · 11/10/2025 09:46

I use Lavazza Rossa coffee, quick tap on the bin and it comes out. Sometimes a second tap, then quick rinse under the tap, job done.

So this bloody thing has arrived.

I say 'bloody thing'

I see now why people invented instant coffee

Im not even a 'coffee aficionado'

Im struggling with this. I did the 3 rounds to season the pot thing

But these are the problems

a- it gets very very hot obviously and once you're done with your coffee and may want to make another, its too hot to handle to get the funnel out and dispose of the grounds
b- getting the grounds out is messy work, they all seem to stick, if I turn the thing upside down I get a load of water coming out that is residual in the bottom, causing mess everywhere, I cant get the funnel out because the lip of the funnel is below the ledge of the bottom section
c - the coffee grinds dont seem to come out in a packet or puck like they do in a cafetiere, so theres tons going down the sink, causing god knows what damage to the local drainage systems.

Ive also since found out that not all 'grinds' are suitable for this pot, it mustnt be too fine or too coarse and most bog standard packs of coffee dont have the grind level on it, so Im clueless (and no I dont want to grind me own beans).

And also Ive discovered that we shouldnt have packs of opened ground coffee hanging around the cupboard, it should be in the fridge but Im not sure we drink coffee enough to warrant bags of it in the fridge and they all seem to come in 200-250g bags. I need 100g really.

Any help gratefully received about this thing.

Hang on, there shouldn't be residual water! It should all have worked its way through. When it starts bubbling, I find it's best to leave it for 30- 60 seconds to let all the coffee work its way into the upper chamber before taking it off the heat.

PastaAllaNorma · 11/10/2025 09:52

You can relax about a lot of it. You don't need to keep coffee in the fridge, filtering water will help with limescale but it's not the be all and end all. It's just having a coffee, it's not meant to be hard work.

I agree with crack that it's easiest to clean it when you're about to make the new one the next morning.

Fasterthan40 · 11/10/2025 09:56

I use my mokka pot every day on the induction stove. Easy to bash the grounds out into the food waste caddy, not really different to traditional coffee machine in cafés etc… I have had mine for 8 years, replaced the seal once and will need to do so again soon but other than that I think it will last forever. Stores away small and generates no waste other than the grounds. That said, we were in the states over the summer and I developed a fondness for their filter coffee. Bur would not want a big ugly machine or faff of papers etc.. This stores away tidily in my mug cupboard with my teapot.

HEC2746 · 11/10/2025 09:58

If I press my finger or thumb against the inside of the funnel and slide it upwards, it pops out just enough to get purchase and slide it out. Coffee grounds then get banged into the food bin, almost all comes out. There’s no left over water because when the coffee boils, all the water goes into the top section so I’m not sure what you mean about water going everywhere?

Like others we just leave it there until we make a new pot, which is every day.

This is a good point and perhaps Im trying to care for it too much!!

She is all nice and clean now drying.

Im not even meant to have coffee to be honest its not good for my GERD or another condition I have !!

The greek coffee was the best one in it so far though. And the stuff we have ordered is fine grind so it might be similar, nto sure. It arrives tomorrow.

Another thread Ive found said that to just put plain water in it and put it on the stove is a good way of cleaning it out because the water pushings through the pipe and cleans it.

DD's university accommodation! Coffee works out cheaper than either jar or machine.

Anyone got a mokka pot (is that what they're called?)
Fasterthan40 · 11/10/2025 10:04

Sorry see I was late answering. I am a coffee in the fridge (in a sealed Pyrex) person but re: quantities- our local zero waste store will weigh and grind whatever amount you want. Also had awful experience with Lidl Greek coffee-Waitrose no. 1 ground coffee works well.
