peel first, def

I imagine it would be very hard to peel when cooked

ComeOVeneer · 03/06/2008 13:03

I roast it whole then cut in half, deseed and scrape out flesh, or peel dice and roast in chunks.

cheesesarnie · 03/06/2008 13:04

Pretty impossible to peel.

Chop and dice the inside.

BroccoliSpears · 03/06/2008 13:08

I never peel butternut squash. The skin cooks beautifully and tastes nice. It's less tough than jacket potato skin.

lulumama · 03/06/2008 13:12

thanks, just tried to peeel a bit !! i shall be roasting it whole, then dealing with the inside

tough as old boots!

I've never eaten the skin! I find they peel easily, with a peeler (not a stick sahped peeler IYKWIM()

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 13:14

old Jamie says don't peel !

hunkermunker · 03/06/2008 13:15

I chop it into slices, then roast, then cut the middle out. I like the roasted edges of the flesh.

Will try eating the skin though.

MamaG · 03/06/2008 13:15

surely you can't peel when cooked though

I can understand the scooping out, but peeling?

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 13:16

he says the skin will be lovely and tasty and a bit chewy -

lulumama · 03/06/2008 13:16

thank you all

it is in the oven, unpeeled, drizzled with olive oil and rock salt, and i shall report back

if anyone cares

lulumama · 03/06/2008 13:51

OP posts:
MamaG · 03/06/2008 14:04

Just stick a sharp knife in a thick bit!

lulumama · 03/06/2008 14:10

and then what.. wave it around the kitchen?

should it be soft or firm?

OP posts:
Pinions · 03/06/2008 14:14

Lol conversation about butternut squash.

How's it going? It should be soft but not erm - squashy - and should smell lurverly.

You should still be able to "chop" it.

lulumama · 03/06/2008 14:17

it is soft, smells yum, waiting for it to cool a little, then will cut it

i can make sit down roast lunch for 20 ,but canot cope with a squash

OP posts:
TillyScoutsmum · 03/06/2008 14:19

squash is a devil to prepare - dd loves it mashed but it takes forever to peel and slice it... If supermarkets can sell ready prepared Brocolli etc., you'd think they'd do chunks of butternut squash wouldn't you ?

lulumama · 03/06/2008 14:29

they probably do, but i tend to shop in lidl and aldi, with the odd tesco delivery !

i have just peeled it with no difficulty and diced it .. so cook then peel seems to be the way forward !

OP posts:
lulumama · 03/06/2008 19:26

well it was lovely in the pasta dish i made. thank you !
