God save me from crappy tin openers

I cant remember how many we must have had over the years. I think the current one is an OXO one or something like that

It cuts the lid in such a way that you have to prise the lid off, its got sharp edges and one side of the lid dips down into the liquid or whatever as you're going round so you end up with mess at the top. Hate it

And frequently, like today, it doesnt cut all the way round so you have bits that are still stuck, today it didnt cut all the way through on two small bits opposite side to each other, so as I was trying to get it off and didnt see this initially it pressed right into the liquid and it went everywhere and of course Im at risk of cutting myself.

We've had ones where it leaves a nice smooth rolled edge and I cant remember now why that one ended up in the bin, they all seem to work for a while and then never again sort of thing

Im not sure I want an electric one, its got to go in the drawer.

I think that is the idea. They go blunt and so you have to buy a new one.

Culinaire MagiCan - never had any issues with this. My DM and DGM always had one too.

I've got one of those too. I have had it for years. It does struggle a bit with small tins with tight corners, eg anchovies.

Stentor7 · 24/08/2025 17:45

Kuhn Rikon used here. Fabulous manual tin opener. No sharp edges & the blade never comes in contact with the can contents, so very clean.
Sorry, I can't do Links.

Tin openers? There’s one in the drawer somewhere. Seems like every thing I buy is ring pull

soupyspoon · 24/08/2025 17:56

Ive had magican before and it got chucked, not sure when. Probably stopped working.

Im just looking at the khun rikon one that says its 5 in 1, on Amazon

I would second this. . The only ones that work.

Bluebay · 24/08/2025 23:04

Many years ago I witnessed an elderly lady neatly opening a large tin with a hatchet...

Costacoffeeplease · 24/08/2025 23:37

I have a kitchen aid one which is excellent

Jotunn9 · 24/08/2025 23:39

They're my nemesis. I refuse to buy ring-pull cans of things if they're not something that I need to be great quality e.g. tinned tomatoes-i am not bothered what brand I buy. I don't buy a lot of tinned foods anyway. But I have had every kind of can opener from the cheapest to ones I felt I had to remortgage my house for. All crap.

Exactly this, I've had mine at least 7 years & it works perfectly. Only issue is it doesn't work with smaller tins ( like sweet corn)

It isn’t just me then. The tin opener we had when I was growing up was a cheap, basic butterfly one (the sort you can still buy for under £2 in a supermarket). I’ve given up on those because recent ones I’ve had have been shit. The last one struggled to pierce lids!

I ended up buying the cheapest Culinaire Magican one 2 years ago and no complaints so far. I’ve checked out some of the other brands mentioned and the Kuhn Rikon would be a contender for me as you can use it for other things and it doesn’t come into contact with the contents of the tin (none of them should!!)

I’m glad I only seem to need to dig mine out every few months; at the same time that makes me think why aren’t they completely obsolete by now really.

MovingSwiftlyOn · 25/08/2025 07:58

I’ve had a Brabantia for about 20 years it works brilliantly but I do have to be careful with sharp edges and clean the cutting wheel. I think tins are not as well made these days which doesn’t help. Am off to look at the Khrune one now!

Michele09 · 25/08/2025 08:01

We got a John Lewis one with a lifetime guarantee, it's so easy to use.

GazeboLantern · 25/08/2025 08:07

In our search for a can opener that can be used easily by both left- and right-handed people, we found one operated by creaming a handle backwards and forwards on top of the gadget. Of all the fancy can openers we have ever had (including the various Culinaire ones) it is the one that has lasted the longest. IMO this is because it can be washed properly. All can openers end up gunky under the wheels, especially the ones that do not leave a ragged edge. The old-style ones which bite down vertically do not get as funky and can be washed.

Can't remember where I got it. Still hunting for a link!

GazeboLantern · 25/08/2025 08:08

Cranking a handle back and forth, not creaming it.

GazeboLantern · 25/08/2025 08:21

Not this one, but same principle.

It cuts below the crimp, turning the edge down as it goes. But it does not cut an opening as it goes so you do not get messy while cutting. Once you've cut all the way around the tin you then use the little pincers you can see on the side of the device to prise the lid off in one go.

God save me from crappy tin openers
WhatAWetLettuce · 25/08/2025 08:22

This, I've had it about 15 years.

Would also rate the Kuhn rikon

O gave up with manual tin openers and got an electric one. It’s magnificent

Feenduvetcover · 25/08/2025 08:45

Try being left handed. That is all.

I hate the damned things.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 25/08/2025 08:51

I'm right-handed (for most things), but still have serious issues with tin openers! I used to only buy things with a ring-pull, but it's not always feasible (and even those weird openers on corned beef tins don't make it easy...).

I now have an Amazon Basics electric one. I think that I've had it for around a year, and it still does the job perfectly!

LlynTegid · 25/08/2025 08:52

Agree with you OP. When my mother died and I was looking at her kitchen, checked which ones worked and threw the others out.

muddyford · 25/08/2025 10:33

I had a Magican one for two decades but the new design is rubbish and bends on contact with metal. Using a £1.50 butterfly one from the local hardware shop, so delighted to see some recommendations on here.
