How to thinly slice cabbage?

SpunkyPombear · 09/08/2025 15:01

I was trying to start to eat slaw with lunch/when hungry etc. I've tried to slice it with a knife but it doesn't get thin enough. Any ideas of what machines I can buy?

Is your knife good and sharp? That makes all the difference.

OldieButBaddie · 09/08/2025 15:03

A mandolin or food processor

WonderingWanda · 09/08/2025 15:04

Cheese grater? Ours has a slice bit on the side,

A mandolin or food processor

And watch your fingers mandolins are notorious for cut fingers. I just use a knife, don't try and cut the whole cabbage at once and take it slowly.

Take as many leaves as you want, stack them, overlapping so your stack doesn't get too thick, then roll up tightly and slice as finely as you can. Make sure your knife is good and sharp.

Use a really sharp bread knife. I can get remarkably thin slivers off a white cabbage with a bread knife. 🙂

toastofthetown · 09/08/2025 15:07

A mandolin and cut proof glove. It’s one of my favourite kitchen gadgets.

soupyspoon · 09/08/2025 15:07

Food processor and even then you end up with random chunks

You can cut it as people have said above but then I find it quite hard as I have a disability, cabbage is a big old tough thing!

Or buy the packs of slaw in Asda and add your own dressings to them.

Yes, get one with a guard thing so you can do the last bit without using your fingers. That said I use one at least 4x a week and have never cut my finger, you just have to be careful

BigWillyHazyHarold · 09/08/2025 15:08

Ohhh a bread knife makes good sense! Means you can use a sawing motion if you need to. I will try that next time.

DysmalRadius · 09/08/2025 15:09

I use a peeler - cut the cabbage into halves or quarters, depending on how big it is, then peel across the layers so you get really thin shreds.

sesquipedalian · 09/08/2025 15:10

I always use a mandolin for making coleslaw - but do be careful, and use the gripper to hold the cabbage so you don’t cut your fingers. You’ll need to cut the last little bit by hand, when it gets too small/falls to bits.

Cotswoldmama · 09/08/2025 15:15

I use a peeler too

Three benefits to a bread knife: one - everybody's got one; two - you don't have to find space in your kitchen to store a mandolin; and three - you don't have to spend money on a mandolin!

tealandteal · 09/08/2025 15:20

I use my grater for the cabbage and the carrot, saves on washing up as well :)

SpunkyPombear · 09/08/2025 15:33

Thanks. How would I do the carrots? Julienne?

4 - you spend less time down at A+E with your finger in a freezer bag.

I just grate it

StanfreyPock · 09/08/2025 16:01

Bread knife for cabbage, grater for carrots, job done!

Blueuggboots · 09/08/2025 16:12

When you’ve cut them as thin as possible, scrunch them for a while. Makes a big difference.
