Nigella's chocolate honey cake (the one with the bees on it in Feast) - anyone made it? Any good?

I quite fancy making it, but would be interested in hearing from someone who's been there already before I plunge in... the sticky icing particularly concerns me, as I want to make it to sell for half-time refreshments at our amdram group this weekend and it needs to be transported without leaving half the icing behind!

Thanks muchly

Not made it sorry but will watch this with interest as it looks lovely. The chocolate guinness cake is bloomin' lovely though and is also easy to transport.

lovecat · 26/05/2008 23:34

Ta for that, Janeite - did you do the cream cheese icing on the guinnes cake or leave it plain?

OP posts:
lovecat · 26/05/2008 23:35

guinness

PinkPussyCat · 27/05/2008 10:55

Bumping for you as I would like to make (and transport) this too!

lovecat · 27/05/2008 22:15

Bumpity bump bump! I have to make it for Thursday....

PinkPussyCat · 28/05/2008 13:26

Another shameless bump!

SoupDragon · 28/05/2008 13:29

[sigh]

If I've got all the ingredients, I'll make it this afternoon.
Sheesh, the things I'm prepared to do for Mumsnet...

[mutter]

cadelaide · 28/05/2008 13:36

Oh God Soupy, and then you'll have to eat the damned thing.

What a drag

Oh God Soupy, and then you'll have to eat the damned thing.

What a drag

PinkPussyCat · 28/05/2008 14:20

How fantastic! You'd really do that? For us?

I heart MN!

And you, Soupy!

SoupDragon · 28/05/2008 14:28

It's in the oven. First thing is that the batter is very runny, which isn't ideal in a loose bottomed cake tin if your bottom doesn't fit properly! Anyway, I don't think too much leaked out and what did got licked off the worktop (it was delicious. Apparently [ahem])

45 minutes til it needs to be checked.

I suspect the icing is going to be very sticky - maybe it will need to be put in the fridge for a bit before trying to transport it?

PinkPussyCat · 28/05/2008 14:32

Jesus that was quick!

Do you have a venue for said cake? Or is it just going on a trip round the block for experimental transportation purposes?

SoupDragon · 28/05/2008 14:39

I may carry it to the end of my garden and eat it whilst hiding in the subterranean airraid shelter away from any pesky children...

PinkPussyCat · 28/05/2008 14:54

Nice one!

oggsfrog · 28/05/2008 16:30

How's the cake? How's the cake?

PinkPussyCat · 28/05/2008 16:39

SOUPY! How's the cake? Did the bees look good? Have you eaten it all yet?

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 28/05/2008 16:46

How are you doing with your cake Soupy? DH works near you (IIRC) - he could grab a slice on his way home.

oggsfrog · 28/05/2008 20:06

Do you think she ate the whole cake herself and can't get out of the airraid shelter?
Like when Pooh got stuck in Rabbit's hole?

SoupDragon · 28/05/2008 21:50

I forgot that I had to ice it...

Anyway, I've sampled some of the bits left round the edge of the cake tin and I'm not overly impressed so far. Nothing wrong with it, it's just niothing special. I've had an attempt at the icing but I only had 2/3 the amount of icing sugar so it'll be way runnier than it should be! I think (if made correctly) the icing will set to have a dry crust, remaining gooey underneath so sh0ould be transportable if you're careful.

Can't face eating a slice at this time of night so will have to let you know tomorrow if the icing makes all the difference!

janeite · 28/05/2008 22:17

Am v impressed a) by your dedication and b) by your restraint. I would be tempted to eat the whole lot - even at this time of night!

PinkPussyCat · 28/05/2008 22:33

Mmmmmm....

Yes definitely awarding you a medal for restraint! Time of day isn't a factor I would ever take into account wrt cake consumption!

Grand job

lovecat · 29/05/2008 09:20

Oh, Soupy, Thank You!!!

That is dedication above and beyond... and inhuman restraint!

Sorry, I was out on the lash networking with colleagues last night and didn't get a chance to log on - how wonderful of you, thanks so much!

I don't think (unless the icing does lift it to another level) that I'll make it, I found a similar situ with her choc malteser cake, without the icing/malteser topping it was a bit blah, hence the desire to make something different...

Cheers again

I left it in the fridge all night and the icing set to a transportable consitency. It's been out all day and it is once again gooey and could get messy on a bumpy car journey.

It was nice enough but really nothing special. You couldn't taste the honey inthe cake at all although the icing was definitely honey flavoured. IMO you could use less sugar too.

Olipop · 29/05/2008 15:47

I made this with my niece and thought it was ok....iced it on a big silver bowl type dish so that the runny icing just collected all over the bottom. Best bit was makign the bees though...obviously....being 5 years old we made a total swarm....couldn't see the cake for bees but I think that was the whole point of it all really!
