3kg golden syrup to use up!

canihaveacoffeeplease · 07/06/2025 09:15

As the title says...leftover from a baking event we've adopted 3kg golden syrup! Apart from flapjacks and syrup sponge pudding (although if anyone has a recipe for one that doesn't need to be boiled for hours I'd be interested...) does anyone have any wonderful ideas? Thank you!

A friend used to make golden syrup cake. Not sure what recipe she used but plenty on the internet.

Treacle tart? BBC good food has a recipe. Won’t use all of it, but 400gms! Yum…

Parkin. But that is more for autumn.

Nigella does a microwave syrup sponge.

Make scotch pancakes and freeze them?

NotAnotherBagpiper · 07/06/2025 09:22

Porridge, pancakes, cornflake cakes, fridge cake...it doesn't really go off does it so you can take your time rather have a massive syrup blow out!

Was just about to say this.
we’ve been making microwave cakes for years.
just grease a mug or bowl. Dollop of your chosen jam/syrup/curd/nutella.
2oz of butter/sugar/self raising flour. 1 egg
multiply the amounts for bigger.

microwave for 40 seconds have a look, then 30 second bursts until the middle is the only bit not cooked. It should be cooked underneath with just a sort of smear of uncooked cake mix on the top. Leave to stand for a minute or so (whilst you heat your custard or get your cream).

I'm no cook, but microwave syrup sponge is SO easy I make it for the kids for breakfast sometimes. Loads quicker than pancakes.

Half fat to self-raising flour (so if 100g flour, 50g butter) and sugar to taste but remember the syrup will make it sweeter so not too much sugar. 1 or 2 eggs.

Glass bowl is best. Butter the bowl. Syrup in the bottom. Plonk the mixture on top. Microwave it, checking to make sure the middle is cooked (2 mins-ish).

Rice pudding

just put it in good food and they’ve got a recipe for broccoli stir fry that uses 1tbsp of golden syrup.
You could have that for 200 meals 😆

NeedForSpeed · 07/06/2025 09:30

You can freeze it!

I'd separate it into smaller portions though and advertise it to friends and family or on your local Fb pages etc - it's a lot!

Lots of ideas here:

Granola, just need oats and a fat. I add the topings when I serve it out. Will keep for quite a long time. Although the syrup will keep for quite a while so you can take your time using it up.

Microwave golden syrup pudding tastes nice - not the same but has a 5 minute cook time (see also golden syrup mug puddings, take a minute) both recipes online. If you are up for it, contact your local hall/church/org doing lunch programmes we would love a batch of flapjacks, so easy and you have the most expensive part already (I would happily provide oats to anyone offering to make them for me!)

Cornflake tart
also, it makes a delicious milkshake made with lemon ice cream

EBearhug · 07/06/2025 11:28

It's sugar. It will keep for years.

I have a tin in the cupboard which must be 5+ years old and have no intention of throwing it away.
Yesterday I saw individual pineapple upside down pastries.

Line your baking sheet with grease proof paper
Drizzle a generous circle of golden syrup, put a slice of tinned pineapple and a cherry on that.
Tuck a circle of puff pastry around each one.
Bake until golden and turn out.

I imagine them being brittle or toffee-ish. Good for whipped cream or ice cream.

soupyspoon · 07/06/2025 11:38

It wont go off, just work through it

Was going to say this, we bought a 5kg jerry can of it and it took years to use up, it was well well past it's date when we used the last of it.

Cerialkiller · 07/06/2025 11:44

It's my favourite pancake topping!

Use it to make caramel...

That’s genius. I end up wasting pineapple as dh has it on his pizza and no one else likes it. I can make these at the same time

marylou25 · 07/06/2025 13:17

It will last forever and I certainly wouldn't be taking up room in the freezer with a sugar syrup! Chocolate Biscuit cake uses a good bit so if you like that then it's an option.

angelopal · 07/06/2025 13:25

Make honeycomb

There’s a Mary Berry one that is incredible
